Very few people can / could punish a bike like Ricky Carmichael so, yeah, a steel frame might stretch. For the rest of us, steel is great. My 2003 YZ250 has not stretched, and, yes, I did measure it.

New to 2-strokes. Like your commentary. I owned more than one DRZ-400E/S/SM. I currently have a 2022 YZ125X and a 2021 YZ250FX. Being a casual rider, it’s all about fun. After getting the 125X, the 250FX (as good as it is) feels like a stuffed pig. 2-strokes all the way from here on out, and I’m turning 42 shortly. Ya only live once. Enjoy it.

Yes sir! My yz250 was down for the weekend so I took the yz450 out this weekend. I like to own two bikes so I never miss a ride when one is down. But more and more I'm thinking about selling the 450 and replacing that one with a smoker as well. At 45, like you it's all about having fun and I'm finding I have more fun on the smokers. And the lighter weight is easier on my body

I primarily work on Japanese bikes in my shop. We used to work on KTMs but it got to the point that everyone that came in never got fixed because the part were high AF and aftermarket parts were not to be found. Just rather work on Japanese bikes. And not being able to find engine cases is crazy. Even from KTM!! That right there would make me not want a KTM. If my cases get damaged...depending on the model I may be SOL.

Cleaning up the ports and casting goobers is a good thing to do. I am one of the few left who ports 2-stroke engines for a living, and all I would do to the later 2-strokes is a touch up here, a touch up there. One problem some engine builders have is thinking the manufacture got it wrong. In the old days, they often could be improved greatly, but even today there are little things you can do to get a power curve you like better for your riding. Changing a pipe will probably make more difference though, (and easier to switch back if you don't like it). You do a better vid than MXA man. Of course, they are not the mag they used to be, and can use a port job. :)

What is your reason for liking the 125 over the 250 I’m in the market for a bike and that’s a major question I have as to which one
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 3 жыл бұрын
If you are heavier, under 5'11" and need stiffer springs, this chassis is going to need some work. I just picked up the 2019 model, (same bike I think), and it is a lot taller than my last bike (97 KX250). I live in Michigan with mostly soft to intermediate terrain. The bike is un-ride-able for my 230lb 5'9" frame. After I get rid of the stock Dunlop MX52 tires and replace them with Dunlop MX33's, here is what i am doing for the rest of the bike to make the thing enjoyable to ride, (and much safer). Lowering the bike and making it handle better is the goal. 1) Bought the Pro Circuit rear suspension linkage pull rod. It is suppose to get the front end from wagging out of corners so much, and should lower the back fender about 5mm. 2) Stiffer springs for my weight. This will take the "free sag", (just the bike weight, no rider), from 15mm to about 35mm, for a 20mm lower fender. 3) "PR2 racing", out of Pennsylvania, sold me the springs fast, and will modify my sub frame to be adjustable. I expect anopther 5mm lower fender, approx. 4) Lower the seat one inch. 4 week wait for a complete lower seat, and it may not fit well. I found "JB Sport Trim" in Gowen Michigan. She will cut the foam of the stock seat and use the stock cover, (or what ever cover you want her to use). I am making a template for her, but I hear from a very good source that Nicole Guild, (owner) is amazing. That will lower my bike by about 2" at the seat. If I need more PR2 also lowers suspension. There is no reason to ride on top of a sky scrapper.

I rode on 2019 yz250, and I have to say man. It was aaaalot better than I thought. It was so good I want one and is not wathcing this video. That being said. I have never had aaany problems with my 2019 sxf 350. It runs extremly well. I change oil every 5h, its always been in extremely good condition, almost nothing on the magnet or in the oil screen. Some run these engines to 200h without changing even anything. And when they do, everything is in good condition. My previus 2017 yz250f I changed the piston at 100h and the crank when right away. Full rebuild. The oil was always very dark, stuff on the magnet jada jada. Not saying yamma isnt good but the KTM I have to say seems to last very good. I ordered a bunch of random screws and stuff on KTM shop. No problems getting "regular" stuff.

They have a few displayed on the web page but if you email and ask they will send you a email with every design they have for your bike (like over 100). Pick which one you want and then direct them what changes you wanna do to it, change colors or sponsers or whatever you wanna do. Only cost 135 bucks at my door even with all the custom work.

Yz is better than ktm all day. It's like garage built cars/street cars compared to a supercars. Some people just pay money for what already has some stuff done to it performance wise. Usually buy a cargo van, ktm coffee mug, pull over and spike their hair in the front as well. 😂 yz for the win

Really appreicate the quality content/commentary. I've been riding since 1969, was 4 stroke, 50s, 70s, 100s until 74 elsinore 125, then some 250s, in the early 2000's started riding Yamaha and aside from some street bikes and supermotos have always been WR, YZ. 426, 250f, until I figured out I could buy a fresh used yz 250 for the cost of rebuilding a blown up 250f, now since 2007 it's been YZ250s, 98% track riding 2% desert/trail. To your point I've run the Old Timer series here in the Reno Area and have been accused of running a big bore when it's just a stock motor with VForce and shorty silencer. I grew up on the East coast Southwick was a local track and the YZ really works well in the sand. The blue groove, clay conditions are the only place I would prefer a four stroke. 3 years ago I've commited to off road and found a 05 YZ250, It's been extremely humbling to learn how to ride off road/slow and technical but it works well cuz I just don't heal as quickly these days, so it's a good fit. The YZ has been transformed to an awesome offroad weapon with these additions> EG 300 jug, smart carb (we live at 6200' and ride anywhere from sea level to 10k) WR trans, 18'' rear, sss fork, resprung for my weight soft, enduro Engineering radiator guards and braces, running stock chamber and muffler with Fisch moto sparky insert, gripper seat (although I try to stand everywhere) Tusk hybird gummy rear, Golden Tyre front, Fat bars, Hinson clutch, ASV clutch lever, Cycra hand guards. Yeah I have to kick it but not a game changer. The majority of my ride partners are half my age and usually on Husky or KTM, but this set up works amazing, they don't wait for the YZ and my phone rings for the next ride... In short, I agree with you, the 2 strokes are cost effecitve, fun to ride, and agurably make a better rider! Love the channel keep it up!

Thanks! And thanks for sharing! I too have been mostly a track rider but in the past 4 years I have been doing some off road hare scrambles and its been fun. When I replace my 2021 YZ125 for the newer model for the track I might do what you did and convert or dedicate my 2021 YZ125 to a off road only bike (hare scrambles). Currently I own a YZ250 and a YZ125. The 125 does good in the tight woods we have here in florida. Especially towards the end of the race when fatigue starts to set in lol. Its strange but just 10 years ago only about 5% of the bikes at a local track was a smoker but today they have made a huge comeback and its more like 40% at the local tracks. I love this because for me nothing is funner and provides that dirt bike experience like a smoker does. Thanks for commenting and hope you have a great Christmas!

I've been tossing around the idea do I want a 450 or a 250 2 stroke, do I want a KTM or Yamaha do I want 300 2 T or 450 4T and I keep coming back to Yamahas 250 2T and you just reconfirmed why KTM is not such a good choice because i had a friend had a street KTM 790 Duke and he could not get parts on a 2 year old bike, KTM are built to the balls so when something goes wrong and it will and you need parts your fu*ked KTM don't give a damn about keeping parts stocked up on any of there bikes , so thanks for reconfirming my choice to get back to a 2 stroke motor and yes damn you Suzuki bring back the RM 250 2 stroke , I wish I would have never sold mine it was my first bike, lots of really good information on this review so thanks for all that ! I’m a a Yamaha guy but KTM’s quality is good better then most brands I’ve used except yamaha had 4 KTM’s now 2 2014 250sx 2020 350sxf and a 2010 150sx and not a single one with issues changed piston in 150 and that’s it no broken cases etc only issue I had is with bearings for some reason they don’t like to last long on my 250sx model but I barley rode it but there are a lot more benefits with a ktm or husky then buying a Yamaha brand new they might be more expensive but they also include a hydraulic clutch, can a just power to your liking, better cooling, no vibration, air forks, brakes, the air box design. But buying older models like 06+ then YZ250 all the way until you spend the same amount to restore it I would just buy a 2017+ ktm

Congrats, amazing channel you've got. Can you give me your opinion. I casually raced 80s and 125s 20 years ago, got injured, and stopped riding. But.. I'm going to get a bike again and it will be blue. I want a YZ250, I'm just thinking it might be too powerful. I want a broader powerband than the CR125 I had all those years ago. How stupid would i be to start back on a bike, with a 250 smoker?
@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! Hmm. Well the good news is in stock form the YZ250 has been tamed down some in the recent years with a longer stock silencer and a lower compression head but its still a little rowdy lol. A 250f might be a good fit for you though, easy torque, decent HP, and great suspension. However there can be a chance you may want more power down the road, depending on your weight and how power robbing your riding areas are. Yamaha often offers test rides on their current bike lineups at certain events like hair scrambles and MX races, wouldnt hurt to contact Yamaha and find one of these events close to you so you cant test ride both and see which one you like.

I'm +65 vet novice 154lbs. So go to a 5.3 rear spring, 47 kg.front spring. 2010 cyl.head and a wise co piston. For my 2014 yz250. With 35 hours on bike since new. What ya think?
@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 7 ай бұрын
Sounds like a good set up. The 2010 head does require at least 1 gallon of 110 octane race fuel mixed with 2 gallons of 93 pump to keep pinging under control but that is the best OEM head yamahe ever put out on the YZ and its strong. Wiseco for safety, they wont break. At 154 pounds vet rider, a 5.2 to 5.3 in the rear and a 0.46 to 0.47 up front will be right on. if you like softer go with the softer of them, if you like firmer go with the firmer of them two mentioned

Not being able to get a case, (or set of cases), for a 2 year old KTM is terrible, (along with parts back order wait lists). Look at all the resources they have to spend on things like fuel injection. Could it be that the government EPA with their ever increasing emission regulation is forcing KTM to spend so much money appeasing the EPA, that they can't afford to do good business? You can bet the farm on it. Ayn Rand was correct.

I need your advice. Were I live my dealer doesn’t carry the YZ250X model. I want to do single track trail riding and some hard enduro. Is is a good idea to buy a YZ250 and do the mods to convert it into a YZ250X model? I would really appreciate your feedback!
@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 6 ай бұрын
Hello. Here in Florida we do FTR hare scrambles and most the guys who race a YZ250 usually choose the normal YZ250 and not the X. I'm really not sure why but that seems to be the trend. Unless you feel you need the 18 rear wheel, I too would get the YZ250 and not the X and just do whatever you need to make it good for your conditions. The stock suspension might start out a hair bit on the firm side but it does break in to be a little soft for a faster MX rider but should be spot on for off road riding.

@@UpAllNight91 Thank you so much! I understand the CDI, Head, Transmission (3&4 gears), suspension, rear wheel, and stand are different between the YZ250 and YA250X models. Do you still think that the YZ250 would do good in woods & hard enduro riding?

@@surfpr727 Well I havent rode one so its hard to say how it does. But I do know most woods racers start with the YZ250 model and do the mods they want on that. I kinda see the YZ250x bike as more of a trail cruiser and less of a trail racer. So depends on how you plan to use it I guess.

My wife likes the smell of the 2 stroke more then the 4 stroke. Do you think a 927 2t cologne would get me more action in the sack? Im really good at straping down my bikes in the truck bed so i thought about bringing the bike tie down straps to the bedroom bed but im worried that could get me in trouble plus its fun time when you unstrap your bike however im not sure of the outcome of unstraping my wife. Both the bike and wife are loud, dangerous and some times protest thats for sure but i tend to watch more videos of me riding my bike and i never watch videos of me riding my wife . am i doing something wrong here?

I’m just a woods rider and like em pretty much stock, would buying a 2010 head for my 2013 YZ250 help in my type of riding? I’m thinking the bump in compression would give me a tad more low end? I would just keep the 2010 head stock in my case which is still a bump in compression. This way I could still run premium pump gas as well??
@UpAllNight91
@UpAllNight91 2 жыл бұрын
A 2010 head does surely increase the bottom end. Really the only difference between the two heads is the 2010 is milled down lower, bringing the squish closer to piston (tighter) and bumps the compression up. Unfortunately that 2010 head can ping a little when using straight pump gas. Its not to the level of damaging otherwise they wouldnt have sold the 2003 to 2010 with that head. But its surely on the very edge, needing fresh 93 octane at the very least. To get that higher compression head to actually be 100% happy even just one gallon of 110 leaded race fuel mixed with 4 gallons of 93 pump would be enough to soothe any mild pinging it might exhibit. It doesnt take much to make it happy. I remember Yamaha saying it needed 95 octane. So that seems about right to me

BTW in about a week I will be posting a video on how to rechamber the head with basic tools and time. Comes out great when finished. And cant tell the difference between a professional rechambered head and the ones I will be showing how to do from home
@jacobhendrickson8935
@jacobhendrickson8935 2 жыл бұрын
@@UpAllNight91 what I read was that Europes pump fuel wasn’t good enough for the older head and during the earlier years the Europe version always had the lower compression head, then in 2011 they made them both the same for simplicity of one bike for both countries. So like you said, our gas works but it’s right on the edge.
