Honestly it's not just the lack of displacement, it's the way the R3 is tuned that makes it feel like shit compared to the Ninja. It's tuned with the max power not kicking in until higher in the RPMs. Like yeah that's cool for the track and highway but feels sluggish for everyday riding in the street.

They overpriced and made a mess of the release in R3 in India. Considering it used to be one of my favourite back in 2016 when I first rode it and wanted to finally buy (thinking it would be affordable), but no. Aprilia on the other hand with its release of RS457, nailed it. It offers more power and features at a much lower price in India. I still have mixed feelings about the release of Ninja 500, I preferred the Ninja 400 for its nimbleness, even though 500 might have more torque but once again it will be overpriced. That being said, Ninjas will do very well but mostly in the pre-owned market in India. KTM on the other hand is kicking ass but it has that hooligan/squid/chapri image in India. Really would have loved if RC390 new model got released soon. Honda again has disapponted by not launching a twin cylinder sports. Neither 8S nor R7 are coming to India, which is a disappointment again.

A lot of it has to do with emissions. Using larger displacement to keep similar power figures. Negative to that is you get lower reving motors with bottom end grunt, super fun for seasoned riders, but tourqe is the last thing a brand new rider needs with zero experience. Most "Beginner" bikes have near 30ft-lbs of tourqe or more now and will pop the front up with a good twist in low gears.

Got my R3 in 2022. Best beginner bike in my opinion, especially using a r6 throttle tube once you get used to the bike. I loved my little R3, had it for 1.5 years. They can be weapons in the right hands (I've gotten outriden on a twisty road by one before 😬). I think if they bump it to a 400-500, it would be perfect. The main reason I got rid of it was that anything over 75 mph was a struggle for it.

If they updated it to a 500cc crossplane, pushing 60+hp, but able to be restricted to A2 compliance like a lot of middleweight bikes, while in the price range of sub $7k, it would honestly be the best beginner bike on the market. Hell, at that point, it'd give even the Ninja 650 a run for its money.

If they made a tiny crossplane I4 that revved to the moon, I could see Yamaha laying waste to the rest of the small displacement market. People like big nasty liter bikes, high rpm's, and the crossplane sound. But many like not dying so if they can get the looks, the sound, but still be fun & racey without the liter bike spice.... The R3 is fragile compared to any of the other small track options. I race with CVMA in the 350 Super Sport class. The Ninja 400 and RC-390 are in the 500 SS class, as well as the Ultra Lightweight class. In the 350 SS class the R3 is pretty much the easy button, but the Ninja 300 and the CBR300R are still competitive options.

One point of disagreement on a starter bike. Resale is the most important feature and the CF MOTO will not have that. This is a starter bike and the best I can find on a used starter bike from Honda or Kawasaki that is three years old, is 75% of the new purchase price. You would be lucky to get 50% on the CF. Am I full of it? Well I own a Hyosung that I purchased with 300 miles on it for 33% of its new sale value. The bike is not bad, you just can't sell it.

I asked why and they say that they feel they don't have any need to compete with the ninja 400. When I converse with them on why they feel that way, they never give a reasonable answer. They just spew arrogant nonsense. I love Yamaha but the fact that they don't even care to have a 400cc sport bike or a 1000cc ATV plus the fact that they won't bring the tracer 700 to the states really aggravates me sometimes.

Disagree, the entry level category doesn’t need to get faster. A true beginner bike should specifically be slow and lightweight with more forgiving throttles to keep riders from making disastrous mistakes. There are less riders on the road than ever and yet fatalities are steadily climbing even with better technology and I believe that has much to do with the culture of starting on bikes way too fast for them. (Recently rode with a new rider that started on a m109…I told him to be careful but lo and behold a month later he totaled it after riding only 4 months)

Interesting, thanks for sharing David. I've been keeping a close eye on this bike since its release & hadn't heard about this. It's a pretty big deal imo cause firstly if the pattern continues it's not a good look for their all new CP engine. Secondly it puts a huge question mark over the bikes reliability in the long term. Could see many unhappy owners in the future especially if the issue rears its head anytime after the warranty has expired. In Australia their new 450 MT adventure bike with the same engine is being released early this year, currently on preorder. So far it's garnered heaps of interest as us Aussies have been itching for a small displacement adventure bike like this for years & Cfmoto have really delivered. Any idea if Cfmoto have sorted a fix with a revised bearing so it won't affect their new adventure bike engine ?

I just recently brought R3. I think for a beginner rider R3 will do the job. But it would be better if they could add little bit extra features. But I am happy with R3.

Nice bro! I just passed my MSF and bought a 2016 R3 this last weekend. I’ve only had the chance to ride it home down the street but it does seem to be a good bike for starting. I’m sure we’ll both have better bikes with more features down the road

You need to go for RS457, because CBR 500 and Ninja 500 are heavy and you wouldn't like it, Aprilia is a tad bit faster than Ninja 400 with more power/torque. If it's your first bike than understand that you might have not ridden the bikes at fullest so you need to learn.

im a Fan of Yamaha .My dream bike is R1M. As a beginner i set my eyes on R3 . I've been waiting for an update this year ,just like you said" a baby R7" .then India happened,Why Yamaha.we got R15M. Where's R3M or better R4M ?Welp CF moto 450SR it is. R3 cost around 5grand in my country add 200 more for 450SR what's the point for an ancient motorcycle like R3 2024

It's an insult that Yamaha built the R15M without updating & building a new R3M or R4M. Why the smaller bike better ? How they gonna put so much effort into the styling & tech of a 155cc single which looks awesome btw but leave the iconic R3 completely unrevised & ancient in comparison. It's annoying as hell.

Agreed. Yamaha needs to move to at least 400-450cc in this class. And give us a nice booming 270° twin note. Right now, the only bikes I'd consider are the coming RS457, the Ninja 500 (451cc), or the RC390. On another note.... what about the low-revving, bulky Honda CBR500R (471cc)? Take a middle weight bike that weighs more than a 600 supersport and shove a dull 180° parallel twin low-revving tractor motor into it. How.... Honda-like. Also, their CBR300R (286cc) is also very dull. Does Honda make anything that's exciting? Maybe their 750 Hornet, but that's not coming to the USA as of now.

The thing is, young people who want a cheap sports bike will no longer have one to buy, if all brands move to the 450-500cc, there will be no market of cool looking 250/300 that should be cheaper. I have the R3 and I'm looking forward to the Aprilia arriving in my country. Not the biggest jump but my bike is 6 yeras old now.

i mean, with the manufacturing partnership with in China with CFMoto, why won't Yamaha extend it to technology sharing so they can borrow the 450 engine from CF and build an R4/R5 from there? The current CFM 450 engine is bulletproof -- it is an evolution of the 400 NK engine anyway, which was derived also from Kawasaki's ER6N when CFM was manufacturing for them. They just need to put their own mapping to make it a bit more efficient (the CM 450 engine guzzles gas like craaazy), put their own bodywork/accessories, an call it a day
