Reading isn't good for a ballplayer. Not good for his eyes. If my eyes went bad even a little bit I couldn't hit home runs. So I gave up reading. Babe Ruth I always tell this to my parents when I have a reading project.

I'm not sure if this quote was in response to Ty Cobb or not, but there was a brief time when Cobb and Ruth had a verbal spar over the value of their respective hitting philosophies. Ty Cobb said he could he many home runs if that was his aim and for two weeks he changed his stroke to hit home runs, actually going on a home run tear at that time (not sure the number he hit in that short span). I don't know which statement came first, Ruth's about hitting singles or Cobb's about hitting home runs?

@@nuwavedave Cobb played in both eras and placed greater value on getting base hits, i.e., hitting singles, doubles and triples, advancing the runners, than he did swinging away and trying to hit a HR every 12-15 or so plate appearances.

Pretty Jay Well, The Babe was not one for NOT embellishing a story.... after the fact. It seemed he was pointing to the dug out, with 2 fingers, telling them that he has 2 strikes. Cuz he wasn't pointing to the outfield, he was pointing off to the left, towards the dugout.

I’m a huge Cub fan, and I have to say, the way the crowd reacted was pretty cool. Yes, they were trying to get in Babe’s head and get him to fail, but when he homered, they appreciated the greatness of the player and the moment.

My comment about the good ole days was meant to be directed to the commentor who started this whole thread! Black, white, all colors, players in those older large stadiums seemed the best of times although there are numerous new smaller stadiums which are absolutely beautiful and innovative, such as Baltimore's and the Giant's stadiums.

A few years ago I met Babe Ruth's granddaughter Linda. She was at a baseball event in Bristol, CT, signing baseballs and posters and telling stories about Babe Ruth. I said to her: "I'm sure you get asked this all the time about your grandfather, but do you know if he REALLY called his shot in 1932. And she said, "He did it all the time, but just to himself. That was the only time he made it clear to everyone else." So she basically told us YES. He did call his shot.

So the Big Guy could never hit anything but 2 homers after drinking and seeing double? Never hit two doubles, or two singles? Never struck out even once, only hit 2 homers and maybe two hard smash groundouts? Really??? Much of what people said about him on his production after a drinking night for the next day's game is just ridiculous exaggeration. He did have the strikeout (as a batter) record of 1,330 for a long time. Until Mantle broke it, and then some! Not taking anything away from his actual statistics, but these wild exaggerations with no basis for it are just weird. He was good enough to do what he did, and I'm sure his drinking to excess until the wee hours or staying out late to party did not help his game the next day! Maybe he could only play a couple of later innings, giviing him more time to sober up, or just pinch-hit while Huggins (Mgr.) saw he wasn't ready to start, keeping him out of the game, until maybe needed later, again to give his body more time to heal.

Bob Feller, whose career began in 1935, was measured at 107.6 MPH. The facts are that in that era pitchers were expected to throw complete games, so they had to pace themselves. And with the cavernous ball parks back then it was harder to hit home runs, so they didn't need to throw mid 90s all the time. You are basically saying that pitchers have genetically evolved to being faster. That is silly.

Nothing has changed since ? They have netting all the way around the infield ( some going all the way down each line to the outfield ) now to protect the fans. A little girl got hit in the head by a screaming line drive & has been permanently effected by it. All ball parks will have this extra netting now. It has effected Albert Almora the Cubs centerfielder ( hit that line drive ) has not played well since it happened.

It was a very special moment for babe Ruth in that game. He pointed directly at the center field bleachers. Then, he hit the ball right directly at where he pointed.

It took him a whil;e to round the bases. When he hit the ball, home plate was in the sunlight. When he rouunded third and head to home, the plate was in shadow. Then when he got to the plate, it was back in the sunlight again.

As he approaches home plate after the homerun, the plate is well in the shadow of the grandstands though most of the field is in sunshine. It is not about the clouds in the sky, if there were any. babe "routinely" hit 500 foot homers and often "out" of huge ballparks ,.. the bats were heavier then, the ball was dead,.. ballparks had 450 power alleys, with 463 center fields,. the pitchers mound was 8 inches higher meaning baseballs going 90 to 95 were literally coming "downhill" at the batter,..and the dude hit 714

An interesting irony about Babe Ruth's "called shot" was that Charlie Root, who served up Ruth's HR (and another to Lou Gehrig on the next pitch), was also the pitcher against whom the famous "Mack Attack" in Game 4 of the 1929 World Series began and was mostly against. In the bottom of the seventh inning of that game, Root had an 8-0 lead, and seemingly was about to help the Cubs even that World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics, but the A's rallied for 10 runs in the seventh inning, seven of which were against Root, to take a 3-1 lead in that series, which they won in the next game. But Root did get some minor payback on the Yankees when he was the pitching coach for the Milwaukee Braves 25 years later, in 1957, as the Braves, led by Lew Burdette's three wins, two of which were shutouts, beat the Yankees in seven games in the Silver Anniversary of the "Called Shot".

I read that Babe admitted that he didn't call the home run shot. This was at the time he was a coach for the Dodgers, and getting a massage. I believe it was in 1937.

Gabby Garnett is telling it as it happened! My grandfather was at that game and sat behind the cubs dugout with his father. He swore til the day he died at 93 that Ruth yelled “that’s only 2 strikes! I still have one more!” And then hit the home run. He never called the shot. I told that story at his funeral as part of his eulogy. I only wish I would have recorded my gramps telling the story as a first hand account. I’ve told my kids and now grandkids the truth of the “called shot” that never was called.
