This DIY sofa can be made with basic power tools and a welder in less than 8 hours. Modern outdoor sofas can be quite expensive and this project can provide a more affordable alternative. I made this couch out of 1-1/2" x 2" x 1/8" steel angles and cedar 2x6s, and some outdoor sofa cushions that I bought from Home Depot. It is a sturdy DIY sofa that can works well inside using the slim cushion from the Simple Cushion Company:

I love this project, but it would be nice to have some small side tables for drinks and what nots. Same gist tho. With a few chairs similar to this couch/love seat you could have a complete patio set that we could customize to our own color palette and needs.

Very nice. I can definitely see those metal supports selling as a diy kit. I especially like, that the bench looks just as good without cushions than with. Always a bonus, if outdoor furniture doesn't look 'sad and neglected', when it's not in use.

I love that you are using steel. I like the simple, sleek design and I prefer the continuous cushions. P.S. I am not intimidated by welding, but to be honest, I would probably use one of our automated welders. I have become lazy, complacent and spoiled that way. Good project.

I don't know why I haven't learned to weld yet. It's a really slick-looking design and looks comfortable. How did you determine what angle you wanted the back to be?

welding can be intimidating but the materials are pretty inexpensive and it enables such sleek projects with just an angle grinder and a welder

Yep, Angie - I keep thinking the same! I reckon I'm going to try brazing first, cos the equipment's cheaper and simpler, and it IS possible to braze aluminium and steel - although not nearly as strongly as welding!

Hello sir. I love this design. It's perfect for my garden situation where termites eat any timber placed directly on the ground. I've been looking at the drawings etc. but have a question... According to the diagram, the seat is only 11 inches above the ground which seems really low for a seat. Is that correct? Is there a reason for that?... Like to account for the cushions that will be on the top of it? or am I missing something? thanks heaps. Loving all of your designs, ideas and style, BTW. Thanks for all the inspiration!

Thanks for the great 💡! If you don't have a welder or don't know one that has... many cities now have DIY places that have metal, wood, and even upholstery shops. The one near me has a $20 per month fee and people to show you ie. How to weld. If f you're living next to a farmer; most have welders. 🍻👍
