The Yashica T4 is the camera of the moment for street photographers and anyone wanting a high quality but small point and shoot camera, and prices have gone crazy - easily £500 now - but does it live up to the hype?

This has been a hype camera for years and will continue to be. Inflation is to be expected and I don’t think the bubble will burst anytime soon.

Very nice introduction video and I concur that paying £500 sounds absurd. Being a bit older I bought one of these new back when they were new and considerably cheaper - though I cannot remember the price. At the time I wanted something small and simple, mainly for family gatherings and travel and it delivered admirably. In your video you may have missed at least one of its very cool features, infinity focus and I could have sworn that mine also had exposure compensation (1.5 stop fixed). Mine is actually a T4 Super as sold in the NA market so maybe they were unique to this model. Basically the infinity mode was invoked with the flash button and was useful for taking pictures through a car/bus/airplane window. Your video prompted me to dust mine off just now but I could not find the exposure compensation function. Maybe my memory is deceiving me and I am thinking of another camera but I do not think so, I think that it was also invoked through the flash button and/or the self timer button. When playing with mine just now I noticed that the buttons were a bit sticky so it is also possible that this is messing things up... Nowhere online seems to indicate the exposure compensation feature but maybe another viewer will chime in if he/she has a T4 Super. ...and no, I am not confusing with a later zoom model - never had one. Great video for a great little camera, just loaded some film into and will take it for stroll very soon!

My main analog camera was a Nikon F90 but I always wanted a smaller second camera that was capable to shoot slides that can be mixed with the ones from the SLR. I had the extremely small Minox GT but the lens wasn't sharp enough and it looked really bad in comparison. You cant unsee the difference. The perfect solution for me was the Contax T2. I got one and used it for a number of years until I went digital. I also bought the little T2, the T4, for my parents and they where happy with. Several years later, they switched to a camera with zoom and I literally saved the T4 from the garbage. I still have both. I think they are both kind of historic landmarks in the development of the camera world.

Returning to expose (actually backlight) compensation, I must be remembering incorrectly, the camera does however boast auto backlight compensation - not sure how it would do that but exposure was pretty good in most situations. The DX-Coding is a bit of a fiddle. It only uses the lower 4 bits of information from the code. This results in providing readings of 50,100,200,400,800,1600 and 3200. Other intermediate ISOs cannot be distinguished as for instance 125 or 160 would read the same as 100 and similarly 250,320 would read the same as 200, NS 500, 640 would read same as 400 etc. Non DX coded films are defaulted to ISO 100 ... worth keeping in mind...😳

Yashica... now there's a name from the past. Then it hit me: the Contax connection, which is another name from the past...

Interesting video Matt. Night time photography with a compact camera has always been a challenge but I'd say you've got pretty good results with this one. A few of those daytime shots like the coffee shop and the bridge over the river looks very impressive. I agree that £500 is a lot of money for what is something of a novelty these days.

In 1989 I bought a Ricoh FF9, probably because somebody had declared it European Compact Camera of the Year. It was so good that years later I bought another one for £20 in case the original packed up - it didn't and then along came digital. I wouldn't swap.

Lovely review, Matt! Just managed to buy a t5 and I was wondering what is about the uncentered frame you can see in the finder. Is that what I should use when I try to do my composition? Don't really understand though why is bottom right aligned. Many thanks

Prices on the T4 have been unreasonably high for a long time. I had one when they were new and used it exclusively with Velvia slide film. It took great shots. Sadly it was ripped off while I was on a trip to Aus, and even by then the used prices were more than what they sold for new.

Feel like my 80s Minolta Talker probably does just as well other than being really susceptible to backlighting. At least it has manul aiso so you can kind of use that like exposure compensation. lol

Odd colours with the Kodacolor, I seem to remember Kodak tended to the red. Daylight film? I used to love the Fuji films for colour, I liked the greens.

I bought it for SGD250 when it first came out. Dirt-cheap with that Carl Zeiss moniker.
