Just a comment from Bob here... I just got a new 2018 Prius Prime Advanced....holy crap. They have got the Prius right now! Everything is so...advanced. just took the first trip in it . Mixed interstate and hilly 2 laners -plus in town. 278 miles total...average MPG? 72.9! What a fantastic piece of machinery. You could sit there all day at 75 mph and still get in the upper 50's MPG. In electric is more powerful and super agile. Turning radius is tiny. Snag these while there is still a fed tax credit. I'm sure we will all be upgrading to Coal fired cars soon, but for now - enjoy the future with a Prime!

The A/C on this car in inteligent, use it in auto mode and select the temperture you want. The computer will make the A/C work with the less power use posible.

I get 46mpg out of my Gen II 2009 Prius. It has 270033 on it. Battery pack changed at around 180K. No real mechanical issues with this Prius. We now have a 2013 and a 2012 V. Not going back.

With regard to optimal braking: It's worth noting that, the higher the speed you're going when you start braking, the less you can depress the brake pedal to fully fill the CHG indicator. What this means: The battery can only "suck" at a certain rate... when you're going faster, the M/G makes more power since it's spinning faster so be mindful of your pedal depression. As you slow down, you can start to push further and further down on the brake pedal to "use up" more of that available regen, without going into disc. This is the best way to capture the available energy and get as much of it back into the battery as you can.

I get over 50 on my gen two. And easily over 55 in my gen 3. Super fun to drive. Like a real life game

Another tip: When driving under about 40mph, instead of using the A/C, turn it off and open the windows. However, when driving at highway speed, open windows will create more drag and decrease mileage more than using the A/C, so close the windows and use the A/C.

Thanks for the info. We bought an '05 Prius new and it's amazing. Best consistent mileage has been 58 mpg. That was highway. IMHO, by far the most important variable is tire pressure. The small tires seem to be very temp sensitive. Pressure will go down as the weather gets cooler. A small drop in pressure greatly reduces mpg. We found this out over time. I don't exceed the door jamb pressure, but keep your eye that it doesn't drop by more than 2 lbs. Your mileage will be fantastic.

Own two Prius. Love them. Plan on driving them both until the wheels fall off.

Some people are so thick! I driven 90% of cars on this planet coz I'm a vehicle inspector. For those who say these cars are rubbish are realy thick. What a lot of people don't know that when a normal petrol or diesel car is stuck on traffic or so the there car is always running constantly so that's burning gas constantly. You see people don't take that into account where the Prius is always switching of the petrol motor off but doesn't reflect on the mpg you save.

These are not only good for the Prius but also good driving techniques in general. Great vid!

I practice most of these techniques in my 2012 model 2 with 100,000+ miles, and I regularly get 52+ mpg. If I really try I can get 67 mpg on some trips. The best I have ever done was 82 mpg for a 12 mile trip at mostly 25 mph. With a bike rack and bike on the back at 62 mph on the interstate I only got 47 mpg, that is the worst I have done.

Awesome video, this sums up everything you need to know. Wish i found this a week ago. I had to learn it all on my own. I'm a racer but enjoy all different driving styles. Since i got a Prius i've enjoyed "maximum mpg driving." Never thought i could have so much fun trying to consistently get +70 mpg. I'm actually going to do some modifications to get even better mileage. Soon i'll find out how that works. =)

I used all of the techniques that you espouse and even with 7 years on the battery (2010 Prius) I was getting about 55 in the summer and 48 in the winter. Just bought a new 2017 Prius 2 eco. I made them fill the tires to 38lbs before I would drive it off the lot. It's much easier to do high mileing with the 2017. The battery is the new lithium Ion battery much lighter than it predecessor with more punch. I can actually pull a smaller hill in ev mode. It had much more power than the 2010. Then I can drift down the hill and charge the battery at the same time. I am averaging about 68.5 mpg, verified at the pump 3 times in the last month. This is a mix between city and country driving. I expect to get 75 on a real trip of say 200 miles. By the way my mechanic says that using 38 lbs of air pressure should give you 28+ extra miles per tank.

Very good basic introduction to economic driving. That being said, the heating part is debatable. The car's climate control actually controls the fans and hot/cold mix in almost exactly the same way as Bob is doing manually, and once the desired temperature is reached it uses the minimum amount of energy needed to maintain the desired temperature. What Bob is doing will only save the energy needed to run the fan at minimum speed between "bursts". This is a very insignificant amount of energy saved compared to the inconvenience of doing this manually and having 5-degree temperature swings constantly. Also, If you live in an arctic climate you have to run the heater to prevent the windows from fogging

Awesome video, Thanks!. I pretty much put in practice these techniques and they really work. I t took me a while to learn how to drive a Hybrid vehicle, but now I'm a believer.

I did not read all of the 254 comments, but one thing I have found with the Prius that diminishes fuel mileage is when the car is first started in the winter. The gasoline side of the engine runs longer to get the engine up to a temperature to furnish heat to the cabin. This has been a cold winter in the East, often with temps in the 30's and below, so cabin heat has to be run more than in a normal winter. I, normally, get 55-57 mpg but this winter I have averaged 49-52. On some very cold days I have noticed that my average is down to about 47-49. All of the tips that you gave I use and on my regular daily routes. I know all of the places for drifting, pulsing and electrical engine only useage. One tip that may help is that under normal conditions, the pull away from a dead stop will be all electrical up to about 17 mph. If you pulse at that point, the electrical engine will continue up to about 34 mph. I do that a lot and then catch back up on the electrical charging when braking or at speeds that the gasoline engine returns. I have standard tires and try to keep 38 lbs of pressure. It makes for a little bumpier ride but I have found it increases the mileage by about 2 mpg in my 2010 Prius with 84K miles.

Thanks guys! I do Solar instructional videos and thought I'd just do a quickie on exactly how to get 60mpg on a Prius. I'm racking up the miles fast.. 30K in 1.5 years.. but it is such a great highway cruiser. I suggest a little piece of 1" foam as a lumbar support on the seat. I sewed one up with a cloth cover. Shell is the best gas, but it is pure Saudi Oil. Original tires are fine.. wearing normally. Oh, with the lights on, the display is low..roll the brightness control to the top and push.

Great video Bob. You can upgrade your battery and get more electric driving with an upgrade kit. Also with a bumper plug you can add a small heater to warm it up before you drive, make it nice and toasty, melts the ice off. @GoMetricToday - Fantastic! See, you really do get about 20% more mpg. It is a totally different driving technique. I've also found that wind speed and direction has a large effect as well. Nothing we can do about that! Remember, you'll drop about 8-10mpg in the winter because of the gas being thinner, the car heater keeping the gas motor on and the battery efficiency going down... plus road friction increases from rain and snow. Glad I could help!

Good video. Some things I do with my Prius is when I'm coming to a highway ramp exit that's about 1/2-1/4 mile away, shift into neutral until the exit ramp to allow the Prius to roll free. On highways, use the cruise control. On city streets, if there is a slow driver, use that slow driver for the car and use the electric since you won't need the gas engine.

Slow down and enjoy the journey. Improves traffic not stop go stop go so you actually get there faster, and alive. Also stress is the #1 killer and nobody else is paying your gas/ maintenance bill. Haste makes waste. Relax, Breathe. The two best doctors. You can even take a nap in the back w a foam pad bed like I have in mine. Make a second home w a nice skylight view in the back or even a lazyboy chair lift back (stops rain when you liftbacking). Second Prius owner and this car is still super inspiring :-) Did I mention you’re going to have this car forever if you slow down/ enjoy the ride (and maybe even your body and mind too).

New Prius owner here and I find driving the prius EXTREMELY hard, especially when it comes to getting the most mpg out of it. I find myself constantly gunning it and trying to get it moving lol. Coming from a 2017 Subaru Wrx Sti to this is a no no. Will keep tips in mind.

Glad I found your Video helps on driving your Prius. I have a 2016 "C". I have been trying technics to help Improve my mileage. I live in an area that is mixed hills, mountains and flat areas. Summer gas averages 58 to 61 mpg at fill up. My best fill up was 66.6 mpg! Longest distance traveled was 510 miles on 8.5 gallons of gas! I hope with your suggestions that I will improve on my mileage! Thanks!

She never lets you do anything! Hey, do you ever coast your bike even when you're not going down hill? It's the same as in a grown-up's car like this.If you haven't tried coasting on level ground, try it after cartoons on Saturday morning.

I don't have a prius, but these techniques pretty much help improve mileage on ANY car. Its the people who speed and accelerate towards red lights that burn excess fuel.

Last time I had my car in for service, I had to replace the brakes because my efficient recuperative braking meant they were hardly ever engaged, which led to rust build-up. So now I do some hard braking on purpose a few times a month to ensure that I have enough brake wear to avoid rust.

One of the things I do in my Prius, mainly to save the brakes, is when I know I have to slow down ahead is shift into B Mode. I am surprised you never mentioned that in your video. It allows you to slow down a bit faster without touching the brakes until you have to.

Here's also a good key: Do the speed limit (don't go over it) and USE CRUISE CONTROL WHENEVER POSSIBLE, all the time if you can. By doing this, you're letting the hybrid system DO ITS BEST. I average anywhere between 60-70 MPG in my 2017 Prius II using this method!

Good sound advice but you neglected to mention the 'B' mode used for going down steep inclines. A normal non-hybrid engine would keep your speed under control by using the engine to brake when your foot is lifted from the accelerator. This does not happen with hybrid engines as the petrol engine is not directly linked to the drive. Using 'B' mode collects the energy more rapid and charges the hybrid battery having a slight braking effect and not letting the car run away whilst your foot is not on the brake pedal. A bit like the F1 racing cars KERS system harvesting the braking energy.

Been driving my 2010 for almost 2 years now, glad to discover I know all of these techniques! It's just applying them to Cleveland traffic that's a pain lol. My cabinet filter needs replaced but I typically only get about 40-45 mpg with 35mph zones predominantly and minimal highway. I assume I'm doing alright 🤓

I've a 2013 Prius, best car I've ever owned....only 93,000 so far....I'll keep it forever.....I always try to see how LITTLE gas I can use on every trip. Best mileage coming for Michigan back to Chicago, 65.3 MPG!

We have a 2007 Prius but I just got a 2013 and was looking for advice on when I should use the various driving modes. I'd already discovered a lot of the other techniques on this video by noting the MPG gauge, but I definitely appreciate confirmation that I'm doing it right and am grateful to you for explaining when I should be using Eco mode. I've been getting pretty good mileage so far (first real week of driving it) but I'll try Eco mode on the highway tomorrow and see how that does. Thanks!

These tips also work well with the plug-in models. We have a Gen 3 plug-in and can often get 70 to 80 mpg on our daily commutes with an overnight charge (45 cents for 4.4kw). Intelligent braking/regen really comes in to play when trying to maximize the charge range.

what I usually do, is have internal circulating air, not outside air, and turn on the AC when you anticipate a stop. with a gas car, leave the ac on at a red light, and turn it off with fan reduced to minimum speed, when accelerating. on the prius, you could use ac when coasting, or braking, but try turning it off when accelerating, or standing behind a stop light, I guess..

I have a 2010 Prius with 280,000 miles on the clock Yes 280k Miles! It was a taxi in London and I get 56mpg

I've driven a 2010 Prius for a couple years, and to me the car just points out how inefficient gas really is. Using the techniques I learned driving this car, I was able to get 30mpg on a Ford Mustang, on a 15 mile trip...I had to work hard at it, and it was not fun (except for watching the mpg number increase). I can't wait for battery capacities, charging, and drive efficiency to improve enough that all electric is feasible for all travel. I primarily drive a Nissan Leaf, and it can easily do 99% of my annual driving. Ironically Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell car also uses an electric motor... so basically the hydrogen fuel cell is a different method of storing energy vs. a lithium ion battery pack. I honestly hate driving a Prius, and love driving a car I can mash on the throttle. The kind of driving that would give me terrible fuel efficiency actually helps when your using an electric motor and batteries. Don't get me wrong, once I'm up to speed, I use the same feathering of the throttle to maximize efficiency, it's just the short bursts of acceleration I'm talking about (just enough so you can give your passengers whiplash).

Advice was excellent, however...everything about this video made me feel like I was at work watching one of those mandatory safety training videos lol.

Before having a PriusV I used to drive a stick shift, and I used to increase the mileage by coasting the car, i.e., hitting the clucker and disengaging the engine. So, I was used to do long decelerations before using the breaks. So, when I bought a Prius, kept doing the same thing.

I use cruise control at every opportunity, I coast very often if no one is behind me and I regen all the time, the brake lights don't come on until most of CHG is filled The default mpg is great, 50mpg at 55mph is great around town and 40mpg is great going 80mph on the freeway ECO mode in bumper to bumper, normal mode most of the time, PWR for when someone annoys me, engine braking mode if I see cops up ahead since brake lights don't come on I get the same MPH at 100mph as my brother-in-law's Mustang at it's best. With gas prices as they are I'm glad I can still go as fast as I want and not break the bank

I have driven 3rd generation Prius for the past (4) years +... anyone below 45mpg might want to consider: Mode - standard setting, not power. Tires - pressure, tread, size. Fuel - try different station... regular is fine. Temperature - you need to allow the car to warm up, wintertime fuel in some areas (northeast) is oxygenated that combined with cold running will equal low to mid 40's mpg. Load - unusual amount of weight carried daily. There is no trick to getting 50mpg. Just drive the car like a normal car with no mode buttons pressed. Car loves stop and go traffic under 40mph.
