I disagree with you for different reasons: 1. Sprints are the heartbeat of Scrum. To keep a sustainable pace, the retrospective is the perfect moment to stop everything, calm down and reflect. And games definitely help. 2. After 10-15 retrospectives, a team can have difficulties to increase the quality and effectiveness and another retrospective format can facilitate the event. Gamification boost the innovation. 3. Depending on the team maturity, a game can help to highlight some really hidden challenges and let everybody express themselves. Games are great for a team of introverts. Try a Dixit retrospective for example. But I also understand your point of view: retro is a serious thing. In other words, Retro is not a game but a serious game can facilitate the purpose of the retrospective. At the end of the day, that's a team decision to make.

When team is not open for conversation, then a game can bring in the conversation

I think get we're you're coming from, and I agree. One of my mottos I've adopted from Jon Acuff is "What's fun gets done". That being said, fun isn't a replacement for productivity, it's an enhancement. I never aim to just do games. I am to do well organized ceremonies that incorporate gaming elements, in order to make the process enjoyable.

I agree the reto should be a respected and safe conversation to show not only what we we can work on but celebrate the wins. One thing I try do do with teams that I feel helps the rteo be more productive is to create the next retrospectives document (in confluence or SharePoint) at the beginning of the sprint and ask the team throughout the sprint to quickly jot down the big wins and pain points. This helps us get right into reto and not sit and thing "what did we do again".

Haha! The outro music feature finally made it!!! I'm a Scrum Master of two teams, one is more outgoing than the other. With the less outgoing group, I usually start the retro off with a fun ice breaker question, just to loosen things up a little before we dive right in.

It's an interesting question. I feel like there's a 'healthy balance' that needs to be determined around 'celebrating victories' and reflecting, learning and improving. The retrospective can cater for both these things. A team is a product of their interactions rather than a some of its parts and it's really important to create a space where team members know they can give shoutouts/kudos and also feel safe/comfortable to be able to call out team members in a caring but direct manor. 'Radical Candor' by Kim Scott comes to mind, very interesting book to read. Totally agree around using as many different techniques as possible so to keep the retro as a novel experience but if we truly look at the fundamentals its all about reflecting, learning and experimenting. Agility.

Thanks for sharing Jason! Is the retrospective the right place to celebrate a victory? We don't think so. It is for professional process improvement. We wholeheartedly agree that we can help to establish good communication in this Scrum event but also in the other Scrum events.

I love this - I don't feel alone any more! 😅 Something just doesn't feel right to me when the focus is more on cool tunes and exotic food sampling. As each Scrum event is intended to provoke change, I just don't see how we can do this if we don't have some solemnity to our events. Let's have fun by all means (the health of the team can be gauged by the level of laughter after all) - and lots of Dad jokes, but let's respect the intent of the event. I love the suggestion to use other opportunities for team building and socialising - these are really important, but as Todd said, if we don't honour the intent of the event, we've missed an opportunity. Great session guys 👏👍

That just blew up all those useless Icebreakers 🤣 Thanks Todd 🤸‍♂️ thanks Ryan. Seriously though, you are both absolutely right, gaming is gaming and should not prevent teams from correctly inspecting and adapting.

Todd=Cookie Monster or Oscar the Grouch....depends on whether you say cookie or games for work. Kidding aside. I think what you guys are saying is to mix things up but respect the team and not make everything a game. Be creative yet always look to improve the process and team. Great stuff! Loved it! How about the question what are your favorite retro formats?

I agree with this completely. I am planning my first retro and I was recommended to start with a game but don't feel like that really fits the vibe of my team if you know what I mean.

Hi @todd and @ryan! one question: how is the best way an agile project should start ? What is the best point for a scrum master to be involved for the first time?

yep, you do sound grumpy! lol. Go out and have fun?>.... 99% of the teams I work with are remote. Gone are the days of going for lunch together or bringing in cakes. I understand the point you are trying to make. However, having some fun at work is often over looked, and leads to a miserable team.

💯agree that fun is important. In fact, we're addicted to fun 😂. But, we think the Scrum events should remain professional events and not deliberately used for fun. Fun is necessary. Just find other opportunities to have it.

When I listen to you speak about it it sounds like you are taking the ice breaker games too seriously. Having a quick interaction of 5 minutes to look for a meme we can all share or a small little distraction to light the mode and open up is not a problem, but obviously if too much time is going to it and a lot fo effort is being spent on the game then it can become a problem. The solution are not extremes but balance people. 🙏🏻
