We have been homeschooling our daughter for the last three years and I decided this year to continue throughout the summer. My husband was so confused by that lol. He said, "wait, I don't understand, is she going to take that class again next year? You're just getting extra practice during the summer?" I said No, she's taking the class this summer so that next year she can move on to the next level. He asked how can that count as a class? Because she's homeschooled! She can take any class at any time!

We are a military family lived in 3 different stares in the last year. Year round homeschooling SAVED us!!! I didn’t feel guilty for taking the time to pack/unpack and when I found out I was pregnant, we decided to take our summer break right then. Now that I’m up for it, we’re back to schooling!

Wow, 12 weeks off for summer! In NZ the schools take 6 weeks off for summer (which is also Christmas and New Years). We typically take 4 weeks for summer/Christmas, then do 6 weeks on and one off. Its flexible for a holiday in March if we can get one, and an extra week off mid-winter if it is needed. Friday is funday, sometimes planned out and other times casual. December slows down, finishing off books etc and concentrating on Christmas studies, crafts and cooking (Christmas school).

We do "year round" to accommodate for new babies, illnesses, visits from grandparents, and days we feel like doing something other than school. I can't imagine tying myself to a strict schedule!

I've used the Sabbath scheduling method for two or three years now and it has been such a blessing. I'm thinking of trying a 4 day a week schedule this year to get a little more relief on a week to week basis. It seemed like by the time we would get to break weeks and especially summer break last year, I was struggling with exhaustion and burn out. There was a lot going on outside of school last year though and that didn't help. I won't have those same issues to deal with this time, but I am looking for ways to protect my mental and physical health better this time. We're a bilateral second generation homeschooling family and by God's grace we're in this for the long haul so I have to treat this lifestyle as the marathon it is and not try to sprint through each season. I'm a little concerned about how short of a summer break a 4 day schedule would leave us next summer- only two and a half weeks- but we'd be getting so much more during the year that maybe we wouldn't feel so desperate for a long break by the time summer rolls around. I did the math on it today and whether using the Sabbath schedule or the 4-day week schedule, we'd have the same number of days by Christmas break either way. So if the 4-day method wasn't the balm I thought it would be, we could still pick up second semester on the Sabbath schedule as normal and not be behind. Flexibility and freedom are such a precious part of homeschooling!

My 4th baby is due end of August this year, so I was just investigating Sabbath homeschooling for this coming school year. I had no idea it was considered year round homeschooling, neat bit if info! We won't be sticking to 6 weeks-on 1 week-off but rather letting the week off be more flexible as I need it and as baby decides how much sleep I get. So we will start school in August, try and get 4 weeks in before Baby comes, take off 3-4 weeks, then start up in October and school 8 weeks until Thanksgiving week and take that week off. That's as far as I got but it's a great start for an INFP-T mama who wants to prepare for baby's space in the house too. 😄👶🏼💜 Thanks so much for posting this Pam!

We do year round homeschooling. I like it so we avoid that loss of knowledge that you mentioned. Also, since we do school year round, when we need to take time off due to other obligations, or illness, I'm not stressed, since I know we've got our "time in" covered.

We start new years in January. We school 3 days each week. We take a month off in the summer, a week here and there, and then finish our year just before Thanksgiving. Our break between years is from Thanksgiving to New Years.

We take off on Mondays and school Tuesday -Friday. We take breaks when needed and of course for holidays yet making sure we are still getting our required amount of school days in. Our school year normally starts in August ☺ which is our hottest month of the year.

We homeschool year round. We all need some sort of routine! We do a Sabbath schedule and sometimes have an occasional sick day or "snow" day. We also do school 4 days a week. In the state we live in our school calendar has to be a year long, but we are required to get 1000 hours a year. I'm so glad you started your channel up again. I recently discovered you and I'm glad I did! Thank you for all you do!

Love your tips! I love the concept of year round but my kiddos were in traditional school initially and struggle with the concept. This year we are jumping in to year round with a six week summer session filled with MVDs. I hoping this will help my kiddos see that a year round schedule really does work best.

We do Sabbath schooling, 5 weeks on 1 weeks off, but we also take Fridays off. We usually go from the first week in August to the middle of June (about a 5-6 week summer break) and take about 2 weeks for Christmas vacation.

I had no idea these schedules had names. I’d call mine the “random days off year round homeschool”. Is it bad that I don’t plan? I know which weeks we are st swim lessons, VBS, visiting family but otherwise it’s pretty ransoms. We even school some Saturdays while my hubby is at drill so we can be off with him on Monday.

They only have to have names if you are talking about them to people! It is handy for me. You don't have to call it anything. :-P

We go year round. We do more than 180 days but, the days are shorter. It’s so hot in FL that most days, my kids don’t go out to play until after 3:00 PM. After-all, it stays light until around 9:00 PM. And I allow them to sleep longer in the summer. Our summer is educational but, very different from our usual routine. We take December “off” but, I work in a lot Advent stuff that counts as educational. Just different from our routine.

See it's so hot here we go out BEFORE 10 and after about 5. And we are learning all the time honestly. The older I get the more I just count everything as "school." The learning we do on our worst days is more than most "school" days.

The one complication in our schedule is that we have co-op 3 Fridays a month. I count them as a school days, but for curricula that are planned out as 5-day, I often find myself doing more than 180 days a year to finish it all.

We just carry things that HAVE to be done over to the next year. If it is a content area subject we are choosy about what we actually finish.

I live in a super cold climate where 9 months of the year are cold. So we love our long summer break, as it's our only good weather. If I lived in a yucky, hot climate like you, I would totally school in the hot summer and take spring/fall instead.
