Robot umps would fix this problem easy, but both the owners and the players have already declared they don't want robot umps because robot umps call a consistent zone regardless of pitch count (the owner's complaint) and aren't fooled by catcher framing (the players complaint). So I say let the ump show commence. MLB wonders why baseball continues to decline in popularity despite recent rule changes to speed up the game; they might want to start with realizing that they're promoting the ump show that the fans don't want to see.

@@bobbleheadbob I think that’s what this boils down to. I get that an umpire’s job is hard. But that doesn’t excuse being bad at it. I can’t be an MLB ump, just like I cannot be an architect. But if an architect screws up and his building collapses we don’t dismiss it saying “Well let’s see you do better!” We say “Wow, that architect really sucks at his job. He should never work in this industry again.” It’s how I feel about umps. No one is making you do the job… if it’s too hard for you, that’s okay, quit and do something else. But this level of incompetence is incredible to me. I cannot imagine being so bad at my job and not getting fired.
@Phyrre56
@Phyrre56 Ай бұрын
@@mr.doctorcaptain1124 Also, we have technology now to call balls and strikes. Is it perfect? Certainly not. But at minimum, it is much more consistent than a human umpire which is a step in the right direction. Both imperfect but at least one is consistent in its imperfections which means things should mostly balance out over time. It's not just a hard job, it's a hard job that we don't even need humans to do anymore!

Everyone makes mistakes is true, but the idea that a professional umpire is not watching these games back to see that he's making a lot of mistakes on the outside corner and adjusting is wild. In amateur leagues I'd 100% accept this because it's consistent, and they're either not getting paid or the fee is just a gesture. It's wild that a professional umpire can say "it's my zone today." or "it's my zone" at all. The correct thing to say is "I see those as strikes" because the zone is not open to interpretation at all.

Maybe the union should be disband and the 70 year old blind men should just be replaced by computers already. The technology is here. We have digital pitch boxes that adjust for height, consistent zones. Look at the rating for some of the umpires and how many blown calls and issues there is in the game. Some in pivotal moments, and also consider how bad the union is that Angel Hernandez is still protected and allowed to be out there. Just break out the robots and AI already. Let the old men Umpire ways fade out.

I don't see how it's clearly a ball though. The wide one to start the game was wrong, but the high throws were correctly strikes. Middle of the jersey while in the batting stance is the top end of the zone, but the TV graphic was wayyyy lower than that. Judge by the batter at the ready, not the broadcast's preset and unofficial display.

Because otherwise you would get teams piling onto the umpires to gain an advantage through bullying the ump into making calls he's not comfortable with. The umpire is supposed to be the authority that keeps emotions cool and establishes a consistent set of conditions for the day. The strike zone might be slightly different from one day to another, but it should stay roughly the same throughout the particular game at least, so players can adjust.

What I've noticed from numerous games is when a close but obviously not a strike, ball 4 pitch is thrown, resulting in what should be a walk, for a split second you can see the umpire is waiting on the batters reaction, i.e. tossing his bat and turning towards first base, knowing it's a ball and a walk , then the umpire calls it a strike , obviously saying, not out loud to the batter. " You dont tell me when it's a ball, im calling this a strike because I'm in charge, and I'm bigger and more important than you and the game itself ! "

Even shared a laugh with someone in the concession line how terrible the zone was for both sides. It’s insane that they have such power to be so ass at their job and there’s no repercussions. You know what happens when I’m that bad at my job? I’m fired. No money. Fired. Pay check gone. Fired. These fools just eject any opposition and still get paid. It’s insane. There HAS to be repercussions for calling shit games and getting it wrong. It blows my mind that people get tossed for literally just calling people out for being bad. They are just calling the game RIGHT and called you out on it, and instead of being humble and checking yourself, you throw them? The umps union needs a stern hard look at.
