Incredible! Absolutely marvelous acting by R. A. He WAS Astrov and not one bit himself. He was in. Perfect deliveries, each time. I'm doing Astrov tomorrow in class! How lucky I am to stumble upon this great reference. Cheers!

I love Richard Armitages body. Honestly he has such a great fit figure. Love that his legs are muscular compared to a other actors that have rather thin legs.

Yes, he's an attractive man, but what does that have to do with his ability to play Dr. Astrov?

One of my favorite plays, I have seen tons of different versions! None come close to the 1986 Soviet version, it’s genius! I really like Richard as Astrov but cannot accept this Elena, sorry. According to Chekhov, she’s supposed to be absolutely beautiful, in fact, that seems to be the only reason Astrov is drawn to her, he admits that he cares for nothing but beauty. Having said that, I would love to see the full version of this!

I liked 1970 Soviet version as well (alongside with 1986 Soviet version) And I agree that casting in this one is not quite successful. Sonya and Uncle Vanya are absolutely OK though, I should admit..

never understood this scene as romantic: astrov is insanely in love with her for a man who says he doesn't respect her at all- not to mention his insistence comes off as just a little bit rapey. armitage portrayed the character excellently, but that didn't stop astrov from feeling like a shithead overstaying his welcome for the whole final act.

Probably accurate attitude for a gentleman at the turn of the century. Judging Yelena for her higher class and wants to cut her down to his level. 19th century negging! Classism was probably Chekhov’s point actually

This production is full of strange choices: Waffles' anger at Yelena not remembering his name is entirely out of character with the man who tries to restrain Vanya's anger at the Professor; the men rushing out into the rain and ripping their shirts open; Yelena, the sophisticated urban woman, walking around barefoot in the fourth act, etc. It is really "Uncle Vanya" for people who find Chekhov too chekhovian.

@@johnmulligan455 the actress is black. There's no indication whatsoever that the character is black. Neither the characters here are Brits speaking English even though the actors clearly are. It's not so difficult really, to understand that.

There is interview in the Telegraph around the time Uncle Vanya opened in London and he worded his replies which would indicate he is gay. However, he is a wonderful actor and a very warm decent human being a special person.

@@sofiaguerrero0969 He was never engaged to Samantha Colley, or rather it was never announced formally on his (or her) Twitter (he joined Twitter on his birthday in August 2014 which is during the run of The Crucible) or in The Times or The Telegraph (which are the two publications where us British people announce such things.) There also isn't a single photo of them together other than the promotional stuff for The Crucible. Considering he lived in either London or New York, two of the busiest cities on the planet, in 2014/15/16, it would be quite remarkable for a person of his fame to not be photographed ONCE with this 'girlfriend'...I have seen every photo out there of this man - and there isn't ONE of them together; coming out of a restaurant, sitting outside a coffee shop, browsing in a bookstore, walking in the park, coming back through an airport after a long weekend away somewhere...not one SINGLE photo...I don't know who starred this rumour, but I'm an 'evidence' girl - and there just isn't any.
