Being real doesn't work in a fake world like Hollywood. He spoke truth that people in the business didn't want to hear. It cost him but I think he's actually ok with it. He'd rather be real and speak the truth than be the studio's golden boy.

This movie is the best drama i have seen since decates, actually Mickey Rourke is one of the best drama actors, thinging now for example Bukowski´s "Barfly". I think he never was underrated...he was called "the new Marlon Brando" and "the new James Dean" in the 80ies...many Filmmakers wanted him for successful roles in films - like Pulp Fiction, Rainman, The silence of the lambs, a.o. - that he rejected and helped other actors to became superstars...too bad that he made some bad decisions with his face surgerys but still nobody doubts that he is an exceptional appearance in acting...

Jon Peter's True. He has no trouble naming and he does so gladly . . .but at what cost? I think the price is far to steep for Mickey: The CHALLENGE is how well he can remain 'Contained' bc likely he couldn't 'SAY' anything about anyone [eg say. . .TRUMP ] that most thinking people w/an IQ worth mentioning doesn't know ANYWAY so I wonder if Mickey's up to the challenge of 'Containment' --for our watching pleasures & for his pleasures of earned $$$. He likes a challenge & 'Containment' isn't easy--nor is it acquiescence.

Regardless of his “issues”, there is no denying this man’s talent. Yes, he’s obviously been “troubled”, but, he’s still here and there is something to be said for his survival skills. Someone I know who knew him at the Actors Studio said he came from a troubled background and he freely talks about it. He has created some very honest and memorable characters and he deserves his respect. Hollyweird is no joke and sensitive artist are constantly abused and discarded. Just imagine being humiliated in from of the whole world, I can only imagine how that must feel.

I can relate to Mickey Roarke's childhood. My father abused me on a daily basis as my mother worked at the hospital constantly. I hated him for all the abuse and to this day still will never admit it. My teen years was rough. I used benzos and coke during high school it was an ugly drug combo to kick. Finally did by riding horses more and dancing at a local dance studio. Been sober for almost 20 years once I hit 37 in october this year.

I've followed Mickey since the late 80's & seen every film he's been in. At the age of 17-18 back then he was an actor who firstly I identified with emotionally but also the fact of him not trying so hard on screen to be noticed. He had a look and ability to take control of a scene without trying like other so called greats! His real life background and honesty is what became his undoing in Hollywood by the early 90's but to his credit he endured the fallout and had enough inner strength to stay afloat to then have a second coming to show the critics he was the real deal. Unfortunately of late he seems to be in another low point where clips of him walking up a street or meeting with someone and looking quite ridiculous plus comments on TMZ haven't done much to give anyone confidence to take him on. Hollywood is an exceptionally vain business and to a certain point you have to constantly jump through hoops to keep the power's to be happy. Mickey is not that kind of person so it will never be a smooth road if to continue in that industry. One thing he's proved is he's a fighter with bravado and attitude and let's hope the talent he has comes around again and we see him hopefully content and in demand.

I've heard different reasons why he turned down Pulp Fiction. Apparently his manager advised him to. The script was hot property in Hollywood though, so his manager was either out of the loop, or Rourke was just too busy focusing on other things. He would have been great in that role.

Well, I’ll give the narrator his wish where he states at the end of this doc, “hopefully yet another director will give him a great role his talent deserves again”. I just cast Mickey in our new film from Alt House Productions and Angel Oak films entitled “Cursed”. Mickey will be playing the lead role of Dr David Elder. And yes, if you search “Mickey Rourke Cursed”, there is proof (for all the deniers out there! 😂) He’s a phenomenal actor and we are excited to get filming!

@@s1050 I'm a huge fan of Bruce Willis' 80s & 90s movies, and I couldn't imagine anyone other than him as Butch, I just can't. Tho I'd like to have seen a version with Rourke in a parallel universe. I just got Nightmare Cinema, where he plays a character. I have high hopes. I didn't like his mumbling voiceover in that Area 51 documentary, but I saw him & The Wrestler in 2008 at a film festival and wept at the end of the movie. He was very down to Earth and outgoing. I believe Mickey would have been a legend if he'd had better scripts to work with, like with Sin City & TW. He really is a bit like Brando - uncompromising and has a genuine 'IDGAF' attitude.

Mickey Rourke has a charismatic presence about him, that attracts you to him... A truly very real down to earth life like realism, a man made of his own. Love his work ever since I can remember coming on the scene in the early 1980's, and always wanting to see more of his art. I put him up there in the top 5 of true to life acting (actors/artist), better than Robert De Niro & Al Pacino. When Wrestler came out I was so excited to be able watch him again, especially because always was attentive to his boxing (one of my favorite sports). And how he has his dogs around make him an adorably caring. One of the most underrated entertainers of our generation/time.

Sad to see that the TV movie "City In Fear" (1980) was not mentioned. It was a good role for Mickey, with lots of screentime, and we witness his acting skills a little more fully than in those other early films where he appears only briefly. Highlighted especially are his gift of expressing subtle emotions with his eyes and through small changes in gesture. Right around that same time, he had an important (but brief) role in another tv movie, "Act of Love", which starred Ron Howard. All I can say about his work in that: it is pretty impressive when you have to do most of your acting entirely through your facial expressions, eyes, and with your voice. Don't forget "Love In The Hamptons" from '76 (might be '78?) or so... if anyone can get that in DVD (I found a copy online and bought it), it is worth it just to see a very young Mickey Rourke in his very early acting days when he was still learning and mastering his craft. "Bullet" is a TERRIFIC movie and Mickey was one half of the screenwriting team on that film (credited as "Sir" Eddie Cook), and his contributions are evident if one is really paying attention to the characters and the dialog. I consider that film to be one of the few shining moments that came out of the dark era of his life/career. He also wrote the majority of the screenplay for/starred in "F.T.W", which everyone really ought to see, if they can find it anywhere, in any format. He plays ex-con rodeo rider Frank T. Wells and Lori Singer (in a very raw and rugged performance) co-stars. All of that being said, this is a wonderful little documentary and I am grateful for your posting it. Mickey Rourke has been and still is a magnificent actor and ~ no matter his trials and challenges and ordeals ~ a good man. For those who have not yet seen it. Go watch "Ashby" (2015). It's streaming on Amazon. You won't regret it.

mickey can do more with a only a few minutes of screen time than anyone...unbelievable how in short moments he can buttress the entire film or tie the plot together with genuine skill. even in movies like "the expendables" his scene with stallone where he tells the story of how he could have saved what was left of his soul by doing something for someone else...it's the most riveting part of the movie, and it is indispensable. in "man on fire" he's barely in the movie yet somehow gives the subplot legitimacy...very few actors have the power to do so much with so little screen time.

I have always looked up to Mickey, he's always been a great actor but he also is the kind of guy that is harder on himself than anyone else could ever be. He is real and honest to a fault, what you see is what you get. It is very unusual in this day and age to find someone who stands up for what he believes in, against anyone. It doesn't matter if that person is the head of a movie studio, the president of the United States or some big drunk loudmouth in a bar, Mickey will say what has to be said and do what has to be done! He has been through a lot in his life and a lot of that was very difficult and caused him much pain and anguish, but he brought most of it on himself. He doesn't back down from nobody when he is right and, if he can look at himself in the mirror and sleep at night, he is usually right! I have a great deal of respect for Mickey, there are very few people left in this world like him who will drive themselves down to hell and pull themselves back out of the pit years later because he refuses to take shortcuts in life. He is the real deal and he is brutally honest with himself and, he will never be accused of being a phony, at anything!
