Download and 3D print: www.printables.com/model/761335-charging-shelf-fits-over-2x2-outlet Also, since there's a lot of speculation in the comments and I didn't address it in the video - the support material is to support a little lip on the front of the shelf (barely visible). The hexagonal pattern doesn't need the support material. Because of the lip, there is actually no orientation that avoids support material altogether. Funnily enough, the contradiction of "minimizing waste" and avoidable support material didn't even cross my mind until after reading these comments. Good thought for next time!
@Colonel__Mustard5 ай бұрын
I noticed the lip as I knew the support couldn't be for the pattern. My question thought is : did the lip needed to be at 90°? I understand that time is also a comodity, but my first impression is that with a progressive enough radius and smaller layer lines height it would have enabled to print this support free while using less filament. I can't see the print well enough, but it could be possible to do it by only increasing the total weight by just a few gram.
@MorleyKert5 ай бұрын
@@Colonel__Mustard Definitely could've been redesigned to avoid support material altogether. Didn't think of it at the time.
@zachm2415 ай бұрын
Coming from a place with no printing experience: Could the "support material waste" be avoided if you printed it upside-down instead of on its side? I do understand that the lip/ledge is good for keeping things on the mounted shelf; but if purely for structural support, could it be printed on the underside leaving the hexagonal top flat for an upside-down print?
@Colonel__Mustard5 ай бұрын
@@zachm241 Without the lip it could yeah. It would even be stronger because the force applied wouldn't be trying to pull the layer lines appart like it is in the video. That said, designing things with 3d printing in mind has particular chalenges not found in other design sector and sometime it's best to compromise on some aspect to save on time. Like, it's easy to point out he uses too much material here, but had he tried some other design he might had to tweak and reprint the thing multiple time to get it right.
@Zack-xz1ph5 ай бұрын
I think a good compromise would be to print the lip as a separate body and glue it to the shelf (you could design interlocking parts or holes for pins to make the line-up easy)
@Leo-sd3jt5 ай бұрын

@@johnmeyers1943if you did know anything about 3d printing you’d know that the peice he remove is incredibly thin and way less material that would’ve been used if he were to just fill in the hexagonal. Also your phone is powered by slave minerals.

@daylen5775 ай бұрын
Especially ironic as the orientation he printed in isn't even strong, you'd want to print angled brackets on their sides for strength (so each layer is a slice of the whole bracket) but he didn't do that. This is jut printing for convenience and not designing for printability.

Cool, but for less space, try a flush-mounted holder where your phone is held upright for hands-free use. You most definitely would use half the material of that larger shelf.

not using a pattern was smarter here, you could use 10% infill and it'll reduce print time and material since it's less full. the pattern you made added cost bc of the full faces it needs to make inside each one

Not so much a fan of. You have a rather fixed set of devices, right? So Having something where you can slide or place your devices into, while charging would be way nicer. Could be made modular for each device. Also 3D printing is also almost never about a clean environment mindset unless you repair things through your prints that would have been wasted otherwise 🦆
