As a future guest, I'd like to see an interview with KZfaqr and published author, Japanese North Korean defector Kim Joosung 金柱聖 who was born in Japan and defected to North Korea then defected to South Korea where he resides. He has lived in Japan for 14 years, North Korea for 32 years, and now in South Korea for 14 years. The interview would probably have to be in Korean with subtitles but his perspective is fascinating and so different from Yeonmi. Striking was his identity as a Zainichi Korean whether he's in Japan or North Korea or South Korea.

I understand that she doesn't agree with woke culture, but that doesn't mean the people on the far right she has aligned herself with are her friends either. Some of them will use people like her as a shield for their own agendas. Just like people on the left push their views, individuals on the right also push their traditional and religious opinions and ostracize people who dont agree. I have also noticed that she has this attitude that Americans don't have much to complain about. Ive seen her complain about groups such as blm over their protests. Just because another country has more problems by comparison, it doesn't mean there isn't anything legitimate to be concerned about here. We will never get anything solved, with the 'shut up, people have it worse' argument.

Yeonmi is a celebrity NK defector who has told her story many many times and they're readily available to watch on KZfaq. Is it her celebrity/influencer status that she is on AB's new podcast? That I can understand. But if its to gain better insight into life in NK, don't have her repeat what she's said elsewhere, or keep it to a minimum. For example, if she left NK at age 13, how much of her knowledge about the regime structure is based on personally witnessed material and how much from her parents or other older defectors? How many 13 year olds are knowledgeable about their own country's political system. Stephen's inability to ask pointed questions is just so frustrating, he's clearly put her on a victimization pedestal where being a victim automatically places you on the moral authority high ground regarding the culture of a totally different nation, the US. Her crusade against US wokeness basically paints a very reductionist, one sided, negative, pessimistic view of US culture in the most broadest brush strokes to a captivated or captured interviewer. The way she says the US as in danger of a NK style socialism in the making dismisses about half the population and the growth of populism in both the right and the left. As an example, her assumption that all young Americans don't see through the hypocrisy of AOC shows just how ignorant she is on current events. Wokeness exists, but there's more to the US then the way Yeonmi describes and if that is what AB wants to cover, she is not the right person for the subject, or you, as the interviewer, just don't have the journalistic skill and confidence to make a good presentation to the world at large on this complex topic. So she went to a very liberal college, well there are more conservative leaning colleges too in the US. It appears like Stephen is trying too hard to protect Yeonmi's feelings because she is thin and fragile-looking and a famous victim who might break. Make no mistake, this woman is as tough as nails and knows how to market herself. Activism and trading on her past is how she makes a good living. "According to Wikipedia, Forbes, IMDb & Various Online resources, at 29 years, Yeonmi Park’s net worth is $1-5 Million." Nothing wrong with that, she does it well, but she is no moral authority figure beyond her own story, don't treat her as if she is.

@@citizenguy If I was a starving 13 year old watching the adults around me oppressed, I wouldn't have the ability to see through the political manipulation that an adult would. The kind of insight she gives now is her current understanding as an adult based on sources that she accessed after she got out, not before. As an activist, she would have these international resources. I'm sure she would have said who they were but Stephen never asks. It sounds like you're trying to start a strawman argument.

Yeonmi is the voice of North Korea ( as she calls herself). That's why she talks about things currently happening in North Korea that happened after she left. It is wrong to say she can't talk about things that occurred after she left. As much as I appreciate you bringing attention to the plight of the North Koreans Asian Boss, Yeonmi's probably not the best person to go to. Her stories have had many discrepancies pointed out by other North Korean defectors and analysts on North Korea. This leads her to be an untrustworthy narrator at best and an active liar at worst. No doubt that trauma from escaping the country could cloud one's memory or give them a hazy recollection of events, but I think you should be a bit more cautious about who you have on and make sure other defectors and organizations support the person involved. I really recommend reaching out to Liberty in North Korea or The Citizens' Alliance for North Korean Human Rights for speakers; I'm sure they'd love to talk to you! They're both non-profits so I feel like they would be a much better outlet on info about North Korea and its defectors.

@@ceeIoc The thing about personal anecdotes and testimonials is that you need evidence to support them, either physically or by way of other people being able to back up your story. I don't doubt that there is SOME truth to Yeonmi's words, but when other North Koreans and North Korean analysts call you out, that leaves you with no one to back up your anecdote. 38North has an article called "When North Koreans Go South, Some Go Professional" if you want to look into it further, with sources at the bottom. I only say all this because false anecdotes actually hurt the reputations of defectors who are telling the truth. It's impossible to actually verify the validity of anything in North Korea until human rights groups are allowed into the country, but until then, the common consensus of defectors and analysts hold more weight than one individual like Yeonmi.

Much of this felt more like a video from the Daily Wire or another explicitly conservative channel than something that’s supposed to be informative on some level like Asian Boss. Yeonmi Park is not the greatest choice of person to interview to begin with, but Stephen just uncritically going along with everything she said just turned it into a right-wing circlejerk with no educationally redeeming content whatsoever. I mean, the thing about schoolchildren demanding to be called cats and given litter boxes? Really? I appreciate her bravery, experiences and opinions. But she doesn't have a full understanding nor experience of privilege, elitism in the US. Most college campuses have always been 'woke' even before the term was popular. They kind of have to be this way. Because once graduates enter the workforce and become part of capitalism machinery, most people change. Once people cross a threshold of tax bracket, wealth, and class, they switch sides: they no longer care about the values they hold dear back in college, they no longer care about reducing poverty, equality, access to housing, etc, some will even become part of the system that creates more inequality.

It literally sounds like the thinking of people who are only on social media all day, all they see are the sensationalized news bites and “culture war” bits..but when you go out into the actual world, that makes up about 5% of what’s actually happening and how people are in interacting with one another. I agree with Yeonmi Park's general opinions against North Korea and woke culture, but she definitely comes off as dishonest, especially in how she exaggerates her stories. In the past, other North Korean defectors have said that she exaggerates her stories about North Korea. Similarly, as an American, I feel somewhat the same when she discusses woke culture. Woke culture sucks, but she makes it seem like a great cultural threat that can rip apart American society, when it's more like an annoyance in my perspective. It also feels like the issue of woke culture is overrepresented online, and in real life people tend to be more open to each other. Although I think she bases her stories from real negative events, I believe she greatly exaggerates them to keep the attention of an audience to financially support herself. Despite my disliking of this particular video, I've always liked Asian Boss for featuring different people's voices, even if I disagree with them. Woketivism is wrong. But you guys are also wrong. Socialism is pretty good. Scandanavian countries (and generally European countries) are MORE socialist than America, which is, to a degree, socialist. "Socialism" you're talking about is just dictatorships that pay lip service to socialism. That's why Bernie Sanders, for example, speaks of democratic socialism. It's an accurate label. A generally MORE socialist economy + MORE democratic government sounds good to me. I also would like a much MORE capitalist economy. It really only makes sense to talk about socialism/capitalism as a spectrum within a specific industry. For example, American healthcare needs to become MUCH more socialist: a government run, or heavily government-regulated single-payor (or more capitalist, because it's neither right now. It's anti-competitive and not socialist.) But tech and most industries need to become much more capitalist -- too much rent-seeking, not enough competition, we literally allow contracts called "non-competes", which is insanely anti-capitalist!

Nuclear sewage, the main radioactive pollutants are iodine 131, cesium 134 and cesium 137. According to the data given by Japanese officials, the concentration of iodine 131 is about 100 times the safe value, and cesium 134 and cesium 137 are 50-70 times the safe value. within a limited range. However, it should be pointed out that the above-mentioned data on the concentration of radioactive substances are based on the information provided by Tokyo Electric Power Company, and some countries do not fully believe in its accuracy. In addition to being extremely radioactive, it also has the characteristics of high toxicity. The radiotoxicity of nuclides such as strontium 90 and cesium 137 must be isolated for 300 to 500 years to reach a safe level, while the radiotoxicity of nuclides such as plutonium 239 and technetium 99 must be isolated for hundreds of thousands of years to reach a safe level. After the Fukushima nuclear accident, Japan announced several times that plutonium was detected in the soil around the nuclear power plant, which aroused great concern, because plutonium is not only extremely radiotoxic, but also a highly toxic chemical substance. 1 microgram of plutonium can cause death. The Japanese government's intentional discharge of low-concentration radioactive sewage violates the marine environment protection obligations of the London Convention and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Article 194, Paragraph 1, Paragraph 2) on the prohibition of dumping all radioactive materials into the ocean. Japan's deliberate discharge is illegal. Not only caused marine pollution, but also polluted the atmosphere. This has resulted in the economic loss of not being able to catch fish and aquatic products in the area. When people eat fish and aquatic products, they will cause harm to their bodies and lives. Most of the risk comes from native fish that inhabit the seafloor where radioactive material is present. Slightly larger fish swimming long distances in the ocean can quickly release any cesium contamination they are exposed to. However, the leaked higher concentrations of strontium-90 were more complicated because it is an osteotropic isotope. "Cesium is like salt, it gets in and out of your body quickly," whereas "strontium gets into your bones." The half-life of strontium-90 is as long as 29 years. Because it has similar properties to calcium, it is easy to enter the bones of the human body, and may cause diseases such as bone marrow cancer and hematopoietic dysfunction, which is very harmful to human health. Nuclear radiation can not only kill cells, but also has the effect of mutagenesis, which may induce cell cancer or gene mutation, resulting in biological deformities and so on.

I'm glad I watched the section about her take on "woke" ideology. I can confidently say that she is incorrect. Wrong. It took waiting until the end of that bit to see what the real issue was: North Korean land owners have been persecuted in a similar way that White people are being reminded of their privilege gained by their ancestors during slavery times . In the US there are real consequences to slavery times and the CONTINUED attempts at keeping Black people oppressed. When slaves were freed, then the government created ways to arrest former slaves and have them do work for the State under the law. After that it was poll taxes, Jim Crow laws, redlining, an entire war on drugs which Nixon's administration has ADMITTED was to destroy Black families, Law enforcement against Black Americans and now the attempt to strip schools of the ability to teach Black American history. Aside from, and parallel to, that; the entire time all of this is happening, Black Americans are not capable of building the resources to pass on to the next generation. Not just because of the redlining and the constant attempts at dismantling Black people, but also because of multiple bombings and massacres of Black towns, cities and people. So forgive me if I disagree and call Park absolutely WRONG when she tries to say that "woke" ideology is crazy or made up. I don't know the ramifications of North Koreans owning land, how the people in power viewed that as a threat, why land owners were persecuted, and if or if not land owners perpetuated a system that kept the poor under oppression with _multiple_ tactics that spanned generations, but over there, reminding white people that their ancestors did all of that, and the reason why some of their kids are able to live rent free in a big nice house, when most people can't even afford to RENT, let alone own, is because of that past, and that they will be able to operate in the world with that extra income they're not spending on a mortgage on something that people who have been oppressed won't. Aside from ALL of that, non binary and trans people exist all over Asia so I'm not sure what her disconnect from using peoples' pronouns is.

Imagine going through horrors almost inconceivable in the West, an oppressive regime, starvation, sex slavery, life threatening scenarios, and ending up in a place where people tell you you're privileged and a bigot because of your skin colour. Yeonmi always has my love and support, she is an inspiration and one of the best examples of human endurance.

I think first world/ wealthy countries have the privilege of being able to worry about issues outside of basic human survival. I mean how can you worry about racial tensions between people when the people are dying.

@@beth1121 you may not care as to how truthful she is. But other North Korean defectors certainly do. She harms their cause by being this Hyper Capitalist right wing Muppet that only tells the story that sells. Truth, to them is important. They want their story's heard and they want it done truthfully. I consider their perspective more important than the hypothetical you gave.

I am a SUBSCRIBER of hers…I am INDIGENOUS NATIVE AMERICAN and I agree with her perspective on many political issues. I’m older and I’ve seen and experienced the drastic changes from biased media and economic factors. Thank you “ASIAN BOSS” for giving Yeonmi the opportunity to share her journey of escaping North Korea, horrible experiences in CHINA and her life now in the US.

She changes her story every time I see here on an interview. She is been making the international talk show circuit for a decade now. She is a pathological liar. Even Korean experts of North Korean defectors believe she embellished her stories in order to sell her books and paid interviews.

I usually admire Asian Boss and whoever they interview but I am greatly disappointed this time that they chose to interview YeonMi. There are many more way more credible defectors who truly suffered unlike her. She was from the elite and just fell from grace. There were times that she and her mom went on reality shows in South Korea flaunting their status and wealth calling themselves the Paris Hilton of North Korea. Many South Koreans know her true colors. I hope that Asian boss can interview more credible people next time if they decide to. She is clearly just a liar and opportunist.

This was already disproven on many other podcast interviews. If she is not telling the truth, how come other nk defectors are on her side? And how come penguin, after doing their own investigations about her, stood by her side 🤔

Especially those at Fox News who have recently admitted in subpoena depositions that they never believed Trump's election lies. But they broadcast those election lies to their audience anyway. Now Dominion is suing Fox for 1.6 Billion. And Smartmatic is suing Fox for 2.0 Billion. Doesn't look good for Fox or their anchors after depositions were taken.
