Kelly Ogilvie expounds upon the medical applications of a non-psychoactive compound from the cannabis plant. He further investigates the unique grassroots movement pushing the cannabis industry forward.
Kelly currently serves as CEO of DeepCell Industries, a technology development company focusing on the cannabis industry. As a long-time entrepreneur and lover of science and technology, Kelly has both founded and led a variety of Seattle-based companies throughout his career, from Blue Marble Biomaterials which converts organic biomass into renewable specialty chemicals, to a social saving and payment platform called Quemulus, to a full-service digital marketing agency named Milli. Most recently Kelly worked as a Senior Policy Advisor to Washington State Governor Jay Inslee on economic development strategy in Washington. Kelly currently serves on the boards of the Washington Interactive Network (WIN) and the External Advisory Board for the Center for Environmental Research, Education, and Outreach (CEREO) at Washington State University. As DeepCell’s CEO, Kelly is responsible for setting overall strategy and direction and for allocating capital and resources to each of the company’s priorities. He leads the executive team in both work ethic and culture and is the direct liaison with the company’s investors and Advisory Board.

CBD is absolutely amazing and is a life saver!!! It got me off of Benzodiazepines with absolutely zero withdrawals. It also got me off of antidepressants. I am now healthy without using any prescriptions. Just a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, CBD and vitamins.

All he talks about is how great it is. He doesn't talk about how they are industrializing it. It's being turned into an industry. A handful of companies are going to make billions of dollars off of it. He talks about how it's been used for thousands of years as a medicine. What you get now is nothing like or even close to what they used. It has been changed to increase its potency. What was once a medicine will now be turned into a poison. As long as money can be made you are not important. Only money Above All.

Sucks for me. I suffer from anxiety panic attacks and insomnia not very often but ever now and then. The sucky part is that I'm a permanent resident (green card) and because of that I couldn't get a medical card because even though that in my state, medical Marijuana is legal I could face deportation if I get cougt using it. For now I've found great comfort and relief with cbd and I'm on love with it. But can't get my hands on a medicinal plant.

I agree with what he says. However, see another TED talk for starters - demystifying the endocannabinoid system. There are benefits and there are concerns of cannabis. People are going to have to be their own best advocates here and do their own research. I can't unpack it all in a few sentences and I'm not even going to try.

...or they don’t think of someone with the RFIB mutated gene that causes red hair but also causes resistance to pain medication. Same said redhead also has another gene mutation that causes a pain disorder. A cruel combination. That person is me. And I’m a cannabis user because it’s the only thing that eases the pain. It doesn’t take it 100% away but it does lessen it to a greater intensity. It also lowers my anxiety. I don’t use it to get high and I’m so resistant that I don’t get high really. But I certainly use it so I can experience a better day and get out of bed on days I wouldn’t otherwise be able to.

Cannabis is a medical necessity for all those of us who have been consuming metabolically poisonous Vegetable oils in our diets and getting one or more of many more modern diseases. The solution is to go vegan and take cannabis supplementation until you are better while getting all vegetable oils out of your diet. You can use some polysaturated animal food-based oil, that in all animal products if you are not quite so worried about living as long as reasonably possible while remaining perfectly healthy.

People: What should be illegal? Cigarettes, alcohol or marijuana? Government: Tell us something about those three. People: Marijuana can be grown at home, while cigs and alcohol are made in a specific way. Government: Wait... That means people can buy the marijuana plant once and never pay again, but they have to pay for alcohol and cigs every time? People: Yes. Government: More money!- I mean... Marijuana is deadly! It needs to be illegal.

It’s not such a simple story. This speaker is either unaware of or ignores the serious problems with chronic recreational use. Marijuana is extremely psychologically addictive. I’m not talking about “reefer madness“. I’m talking about witnessing, and myself experiencing, how chronic use is emotionally stunting and harmful. Anybody who denies this is either not being honest, or does not know any habitual users.

Thank you, Michael, an incredibly accurate statement. I don't know if society is ready for blanket legalization. Sure it'll never be as dangerous as all those other manufactured painkillers, or alcohol and tobacco, some of the most harmful legal drugs in human history, but it's got dangers of its own. And we won't see those effects for decades.

The receptors are native to the human body, cannabis just happens to produce molecules that interact with that system. This is the main reason why cannabis has such wide ranging effects, it works with a core human biological system that controls inflammation, appetite, anxiety, pain, pregnancy, etc. called the "endocannabinoid system"!

@@terrysavoy502 I don't think he did. Kelly is right, legalization is coming, but there are different definitions of legal. Given that the entire foundations for cannabis prohibition were based on fear (of foreigners and people of color), fraud (lying about its use in medicine and agriculture at the congressional hearings, and by using the prejudicial slang marihuana to trick farmers and doctors), and greed (Rockefeller and his big-pharma / allopathic MD industry and oil profits, Hearst and his timber holdings, and Anslinger and his anti-narcotic bureaucracy), it only seems right that true legalization must revert to the status quo ante. Anything less would perpetuate the damages of the ongoing prohibition and enrich unjustly parties who have benefited from the suffering and misery of the former prohibition. For example, hemp is now federally legal, but many states are making farmers jump through hoops and obtain licenses to grow a completely non-psychoactive plant. In 1936 no farmer needed to tell the government that they were growing cannabis. He did not have to fear arrest for failing to have paperwork in place and did not have to pay for a license to grow a plant that was given to all of us by nature and bred to such great usefulness by his forebearers. He didn't have to worry if he harvested his own seed for the next year and his THC levels bumped above 0.3%. True freedom and legalization is only achieved when one does not need permission to perform an act and to carry out ones livelihood, given the constraints of remaining within ones personal property and respecting the rights and properties of others. The cost of these licenses and pseudo-legalization are felt by people like Kelly's sister, Sasha. They pay a higher price than they would without the licenses. Even worse, they miss the opportunity to have people like Guiseppi involved in the production and hybridization and medicalization of this plant because he has principles, or the cost is too high for him to be involved. They also lose out on the many farmers who don't want the fear of messing up paperwork hanging over their head when just about every other crop doesn't have that kind of B.S. attached to it. I am glad that there are steps toward legalization, I am also particularly grateful for the opportunity for those who need this plant as medicine, but justice is not served to this plant and its users and potential producers until it is regulated or unregulated to the extent that other agriculture commodities are.

Without taking a position on legalization... I have to say it is so upsetting to see you offer this presentation and offer ZERO evidence for, or against, the use of cannabis. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, it is opinionated conversations like this that lead us nowhere. You had the opportunity to EDUCATE and rather, seized your minutes as an opportunity to persuade. You appear intelligent and I'd assume you are educated on the topic... how could you offer zero evidence for those that are hoping to learn? 23,000 studies and you referred to .......zero......
@workinprogresslabs
@workinprogresslabs 5 жыл бұрын
Anthony these speeches are highly curated and we're encouraged to abide by TED's core ethos: inspire viewers to question why, and seek further answers. There are many studies on the topic, including many speeches and even TED talks on cannabis. Yes, I am educated on the topic, and no, this was not the venue to reference studies, although my original script had several of them linked in footers. I disagree that this leads us nowhere, quite to the contrary, had you been present you'd have seen that many people there, and since have reached out to learn more. Many had no idea cannabis had ever been "medicine", and instead only known the stigma of it as an illegal substance. I respect your opinion, and can only ask you to see if from the perspective of it's intent: provide a history of cannabis as medicine, and reframe the stigma entrenched in nearly 50 years of prohibition in 13 minutes or less.
