Steve Howe was the most interesting guitarist out of all those guitar heroes of the 60s and 70s with his jazz and classical influences creating a unique sound, there was no one else like him.

Steve Howe, the guitarist, was voted "Best Overall Guitarist" by Guitar Player Magazine readers five years in a row, back in the 1970s. He's an amazing guitarist, and every musician in the band "Yes" are among the top players to have ever played their instruments. You've mentioned Rick Wakeman, who's amazing. Nobody sounds quite like vocalist Jon Anderson! The drummer, Alan White, was a very busy session drummer who had toured with John Lennon, joined the members of Yes less than a week before they began a world tour, and continued as Yes' drummer until his death less than 2 years ago. Bass player Chris Squire was an icon and he influenced thousands of bass players, including Rush's Geddy Lee, but he died of Leukemia about 7 years ago, before Yes was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Rick Wakeman, Steve Howe and Jon Anderson are still playing and recording to this day.

I'd check out Close to the Edge. It's a extremely long song, but it's their best song by far. Written over 10 years before I was even born, and I consider it to still be one of the best songs I have ever heard.

This takes me back to high school when I first heard this when it first came out. I'm so blessed at 66 to have had a musical life enriched by YES. Their Rock n Roll Hall of Fame induction performance is legendary, "Round About" and "Owner of a Lonely Heart" in their true greatness.
@yes_head

That's a Portuguese 12-string Steve Howe is playing in the first section. This is your first exposure to Yes? Then I'd recommend "Roundabout" next, which is their biggest hit and most well known song of the 70's. That will give you a taste of what this band was about -- dense sounding arrangements that featured complex vocals and instrumental playing. Yes were sort of a musician's band that could also fill concert halls, at least during the heyday of progressive rock, which was about this time period. BTW that video is using the 'Yessongs' *album* recording, which is not the same as the 'Yessongs' *movie* audio (different concerts from the same tour). That's why the occasional edits -- it's to keep the film performance and the album audio in sync.

Yes, that is Wakeman in this live performance. However, the studio version was recorded before Wakeman joined the group, when Tony Kaye was on keys. (Kaye would later return of "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and other 1980s songs. Other Yes keyboard players have included Patrick Moraz, Geoff Downes, Bill Sherwood, Igor Khoroshev…and Wakeman's son, Oliver.)

Craig, I envy you in that you have the opportunity to hear these beloved YES masterpieces for your very first time. You'll undoubtedly get many suggestions on what to listen to next. Often the live performances reach greater heights, but in so many of the early performances, the audio sucks. You will probably do much better with experiencing the studio versions first. Good listening which ever way you decide!

You might like the studio version of And You And I (although the live version is also very good), but Yours Is No Disgrace is another belter from the The Yes Album era (1971). This live performance is from the Yessongs movie which was a recorded live performance from the London Rainbow Theatre in December 1972.

"Where to go from here?" Wow. "Close To The Edge" or "Gates of Delirium" (epics that will blow your mind). "Changes" (pop, but with a complexity that makes it brilliant). "Heart of the Sunrise" (musical, mathematical patterns that go from thunderous to gentle). Anything from "Tales From Topographic Oceans" (epics that are elegant and thoughtful... but still have power). "Awaken" (prog rock in a heavenly cathedral).

Rick Wakeman was the second Keyboard player after founding member Tony Kaye. Kaye was on the studio version of this song. Wakeman turned down David Bowie to join Yes. His solo career on A&M took off and so he was in and out of Yes and various Yes spin offs. Yes most critically acclaimed album is probably Close to the Edge the first to feature a new bubble logo loosely based on the original Yes logo which was a bubble with the word Yes in it.

Yes is one of the best bands in the progressive rock genre. Other progressive bands you may like include Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Emerson Lake and Palmer and Porcupine Tree. The 1970s was the best decade for new music. I recommend former Genesis lead vocalist Peter Gabriel's live performance of "In Your Eyes" for a life-changing experience. Cheers!

The 1970’s was the best period for Yes they went down hill after that. The Yes Album, Close to the Edge, Fragile, Topographic Oceans, Relayer and Going for the One are the best of the classic Yes.

If you want to dig in Yes's music, there are so many great tracks, at least as great as this one. It just depends on what you search. Complex ? : Gates of Delirium. Dancing hit ? Owner of A Lonely Heart. Agressiv ? Sound Chaser. Incredibly inovative ? The Ancient. Incredible bassline ? Heart of the Sunrise… And of course Roundabout is a very good start.

A shortened edit was released on the radio of Roundabout (it left out the bridge). Yes songs are typically quite long, so that might be an option. However, a live version of Roundabout will probably be the complete song. All Yes songs are good . . . with exceptions coming later (at least for me) starting with that thing called Big Generator where for the first time ever I actually *didn't* like most of the songs. If you stick to the 1970s, though, everything is great.

Go find the Floating Green Head album and digest that. This is NOT a singles band. Don't cheat yourself thinking a few 'hits' gives you the best picture. THEY DO NOT. Get the album and listen to that. After that studio-project first, then pull up their live shows and I was always MORE amazed they could deliver such complex music on-stage.

I would recommend doing the studio version of the song first, then check out the live version, as some of the video quality is not the greatest. As to which songs to go into next, that is quite the rabbit hole. I would recommend starting with Roundabout, then Yours is No Disgrace, A Venture, Starship Trooper, And You and I, culminating in Close to the Edge.

When you get around to doing Gates of Delirium DO NOT do any live version. Non of the recordings do it justice and they loose a lot of the nuances. In general though, i think live recordings are not the way to go for first listens - imo. And just a heads up > Gates of Delirium, Close to the Edge and Awaken are the pinnacle achievements of the band, and of music in general. ...But before doing any of these, warmup with more songs from The Yes Album and Fragile (where Roundabout is from).
