Yesterday, I was sitting in my car in the parking lot at work waiting to go in and this song came on the radio. I was deep in thought of all things I had going on and I just close my eyes and for a moment I was a teenager again in the 70's without a care in the world. It was one of those moments where you actually felt transported in time and space. Those were truly the wonder years. I went into work with a tear in my eye and a load lifted off my shoulders.

The lyrics of this piece are so meaningful to me. Through my perspective, I've found that since the song symbolically sets this "chess" situation, it is trying to show the importance of the decisions we make and how they affect the people around us. In particular, the lyrics; "Don't surround yourself with yourself." implies not only that we should act with compassion towards our peers, acquaintances, friends, etc. but also that if we overthink things in our minds, it makes it harder for us to communicate and bond with the people we care about and thus, we "Surround ourselves with ourselves". Although I haven't really played chess that much at all, I still understand the symbolism of the piece which is an aspect that allows the song to express itself in a way that perfectly creates a deeper meaning while still preventing that meaning from becoming difficult to understand. Also, in my mind, when you "move back two squares", you're basically calming yourself and reassuring yourself that you have the capacity to make a positive change based on your choices.

Hmmm excellent, I just love it without thinking about the meaning but great to read your interpretation

....Hermosa Beach, California down by the Green Store, hardly moving a muscle lounging on the beach and listening to inspiring music like this, getting browner by the hour, a very mellow scene, get up and jog down the beach, beautiful and friendly girls everywhere, and it's the summer of 1972. Walk over to the Green Store to get a cold drink where I hear the owner complaining about people violating the parking laws, I'd give ten thousand dollars to go back there for one hour.

Genius.....I mean how did they come up with the lyrics for the last half of the song? They should have made it the whole side of a album, then it could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.............
