The drum tracks on the album this was from Big Generator were mostly recorded in a castle in Italy which provided some great acoustics and ambience. I believe at the time this was being made drummer Alan White had an endorsement deal with Tama. The track that really showcases the Big Generator drum sound the best is Shoot High Aim Low. Big Generator also has two longer tracks on side two that I think feature the 80's hit years line up of Yes doing a pretty good job playing in the older Yes style, Final Eyes and I'm Running.

This song is a hit from their Big Generator album, which was released after their 90125 album, which contained Owner of a Lonely Heart. The title song, Big Generator also did well and is really hard sounding. It growls. I think you'll like it a lot. Normally, I don't care for Yes albums without Jon Anderson as their singer, but in '80 the band released the Drama album, and I really love 3 songs on it, including one that would now be considered Prog Metal, the amazing "Machine Messiah." You should react to that song, for sure. And "South Side of the Sky," from Fragile, which is amazing.

I worked at a record store in MN when Big Generator came out. I played the HELL out of the album in that store! I still have it in excellent condition. I prefer old Yes's music and Bruford's Ludwig 6.5 x 14" Supersensitive snare over this plastic one, but this album and 90125 were ass kickers. Mad hats off to Trevor Horn for the incredible production.

90125 and Big Generator where this song comes from are from the mid 80’s where Yes had to reinvent themselves on a more commercial basis as Genesis also did due to the New Wave, Punk and New Romantic influences at that time.

AMEN. Spoken like a true Yes fan. Real Yes fans love Yes. All eras of the band. I will admit that I prefer albums with Jon Anderson, but Yes always had a top notch lineup that usually had key members to keep the Yes sound intact like Guitarist Steve Howe or bassist Chris Squire who played on every Yes album from 1968 until his death in 2015.

Yes. This is the: Rabin-Yes/'80s Yes/more commercial variant. Definitely, more commercially successful, but "shorter-lived," really. The band was killer and did music from almost all the periods of the band (up 'til then -of course😛) -save the Peter Banks music (from the first 2 albums). The core of the band were there: Chris Squire on Bass {as ALWAYS!!!! 💜💜💜💜🤘🤘⚡] Tony Kaye [the original keyboardist from before Rick Wakeman arrived] Jon Anderson (of course) [lead vocalist] Alan White [the "2nd drummer": Who had come in to replace Bill Bruford] and (the one "outlier"): Trevor Rabin [guitarist] ...Rabin was, really, the component who had transformed "Yes," inserting his more "rock radio"/"radio-friendly sensibilities and style, in song-writing. ...Despite the radical shift in style, many Yes fans accepted him and liked him. It was after this period (in the very late '80s/early '90s) that the "classic line-up, MINUS Chris Squire!) did the: Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe project [or: A.B.W.H. - as fans often used to refer to the band, for short.] ...then all aspects of Yes went in hiatus, until they decided to do the: 'Union' project (and I forget what year that was). It wasn't a good album, at all, but BOTH versions of the band (the '70s "standard" and the '80s "Rabin-era") toured and played together. I believe they, even tried to include Peter Banks (but I can't recall the details, off-the-top-of-my-head, right now and don't think that he toured with them (but may have contributed to some of the tracks on the Union album. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️) -I agree: there are things to appreciate and enjoy about MOST eras of Yes. ...at least: the '60s-'70s version, the "fill-in" version, that recorded DRAMA (MY, personal, favorite YES album of ALL time! - Unexpected, but: PERFECT! - Trevor Horn (the later producer and former "Buggle"-YES! HIM!-sang Lead Vocals!!!! - in fact, Drama COULD be termed (amusingly) "Yes-Buggles" (as both members of said band: Trevor Horn AND Geoff Downes, played on it/became members of: Yes!!) and the '80s ["Cinema"] reunion, which became the Rabin-Yes. 👍👍 💥🔥

I was a Trevor Rabin fan before he joined Yes. Check out his 3rd solo album,Wolf. This is Yes playing Rock and Roll in 1987. There’s no Prog on Big Generator yet I still prefer it to 90125. Fun fact about the title track, Big Generator Chris lowered his strings a whole step on his 5 string Tobias so the low B would sound a low A. When he played the chorus he blew out his speakers because they couldn’t handle the frequency. Final Eyes is my favorite because it sounds like Classic Yes.

According to Alan White (the drummer), the basic drum tracks were laid down something like 18 months before the track was finished, if I recall correctly from the YesYears documentary. Trevor Rabin was such a perfectionist that it took forever to finish the tracks on Big Generator, which caused a lot of friction among the band members.

I like this album more than 90125, which, at the time, felt a bit too "pop-ish" to me compared to the earlier era. Big Generator, IMO, began to bring back some of the complexity that we love in the earlier albums but in smaller doses. Though I've been a huge Yes fan since the early 70s, I never saw them live until the tour for Big Generator. (I really hated stadium concerts due to the extremely poor sound quality of those shows back then.). I've seen them many times since and almost all of those shows have been superb. TLDR; I agree Chod - all eras of Yes are super.

I first heard Yes in 1973. I first saw them in 1974. And I have loved all their incarnations. Though I will admit the more recent stuff doesn’t seem very inspired to me. But Jon always envisioned a band that would carry on past its individual members. A lot of people try to dis the Rabin era. But he was just what Yes needed to put the band back on the charts and Big Generator is an excellent album. So is Talk. Of course I prefer the classic Yes lineup and the 70s era prog. But everything that came after is also Yes. Ideological purity is antithetical to Jon’s vision. I agree with you… this too is Yes.

"Big Generator" was released in 1987. "Drama", "90125", and "Big Generator" are products of a dramatically changed YES band after the release of "Tormato" in '78. In ways the changes with the music of YES are comparable to how Genesis changed when Phil Collins took over on vocals/writing after Gabriel left. Not the same band exactly, and it was hard at first with both these bands, but each iteration of these bands was still top notch musically. The chain that linked all variations of the personnel in YES was Chris Squire. At points everything changed around him, but his bass and songwriting still stood out. The soul never went from the band. Chris Squire was their soul. It's funny when you say "later" YES. It is a bit later, but they still had many albums to come. To my mind the best album of "late" YES is "Magnification", released in 2001, yet another 14 years after this album. "In The Presence Of", "Dreamtime", or the title track "Magnification". Blessings. Keep hangin' in there!
