The scene where Bambi thinks he's hearing his mother is actually a hunter using deer sounds to attract wild deers. That's why dogs appear "out of nowhere". And the reason he just stands there is because those same dogs were after his mom seconds before she died. So he's paralyzed with fear because of his trauma.

They even foreshadow it with Ronno teasing and telling everyone about it, right down to the deer whistle translating to "I'm here". No one believes him, but the bully deer has heard it before. I thought it was downright chilling the way they went from Bambi dreaming about her to suddenly hearing what the audience already knows is a trap. It fell right in with the way the original film relied primarily on suspense and the unseeable for terror.

I think you really misunderstood this film. In my opinion, Bambi II is stronger than the original, because instead of focusing on a forced love story, the film depicts the struggles of a single father who was not in a position or ready to raise a child, but with the death of bambi's mother the great prince has no choice but to forge a relationship with his son. In the beginning he does his best to not become attached to Bambi, planning on finding another doe to rear him, but as the film progresses the bond between father and son awakens. I still tear up to this day watching the grasshopper scene where Bambi's father finally opens up and just has fun with him.

His mother did actually die in the first movie. The call that’s heard is a hunter using a deer call, which makes Bambii believe it’s his mother. The dogs are from the hunter. He stands there due to being practically paralyzed by fear. Kinda sad but it makes a little more sense.

This is one of the few times that I gotta STORNGLY disagree with you on a review. The whole point of the movie is to show the aftermath of loss and how people deal with grief, and I think it does a really good job of tackling how the Prince had to learn how to be a single dad in spite of gender norms and his own issues with expressing vulnerability. It also shows how Bambi had to struggle with an emotionally unavailable father during the aftermath of a loss that completely changed his world. Is it perfect? Absolutely not, there's definitely some filler scenes and dumb jokes. But I think this is one of the best Disney sequels because it does tackle such difficult emotional concepts. Also to address some of your specific criticisms more: Mina (the replacement mom) IS seen after she's freed by the Prince. It's during the scene where Bambi wakes up from the fall and she backs away as she sees him and the Prince being affectionate, because she knows that she's no longer needed. As for Ronno, I feel like it was pretty obvious that he felt threatened by Bambi because Bambi had a bunch of friends and also had a (relatively) close relationship with the Prince, so he tried to one-up him by acting bigger, tougher, and braver to impress everyone else.

I already made a comment about this but the freeze response bambi has when the dogs go after him is a very real thing. Most deers have it already and since bambi in that moment is also reliving trauma it is very likely for him to freeze in fear. It's just as valid as running away or fighting.

8:07 deer in real life are known to freeze in place if frightened. Admittedly this doesn’t happen often, and usually is from them freezing right before a car hits them, but it’s common enough that Bambi freezing right here is actually realistic
@horse14t
@horse14t 3 жыл бұрын
The reason for the freezing is because their predator's eyes are more sensitive to movement and are red-green colourblind. Meaning they can't tell the difference between red and green. Predators also often have fairly bad eyesight. Especially when compared to us. So a frozen deer has a better chance of surviving than one that's moving because the predator will have a harder time actually, literally seeing them. Of coarse until cars and Humans came along 😐

I feel like this one you really did a bad job with. First of all freezing is a natural response to fear so it's perfectly normal for Bambi to react like that. Bambi's friends are there for comedic effect and I think they do that job well. His relationship with his father was also well developed in my opinion it shows how fathers are often torn between doing what's "expected" of them and raising their children like a father should. Which I guess breaks the norms and shows progression. So yeah that's my thoughts and I can't believe you rated it so low

Bambi freezes because that's what deer do when they're distressed, it's the same reason they often freeze in front of cars when crossing the road. "It doesn't make any sense" Yes it does Seamus

this is one of, if not the, most accomplished, moving, and well-written disney sequels. the animation is just as beautiful as the original, as are the plot and music. it’s as close to perfect as we’re ever going to see. i cry every single time i watch it. just a few ‘fun’ facts: - the reason bambi runs back to mina to sacrifice himself to the dogs is because what she yells after him (“run, bambi, don’t look back”) is word for word what his mother said to him before she died. he was suddenly confronted with these emotionally loaded words, screamed at him by another doe who was going to die for him, and he decided in that blur of grief and anger and fear that this time he was going to change it. this time, he was going to save her. just writing that makes me tear up - it’s genuinely such a mature, traumatic scene. and the lighting in the dog chase and the first dog scene in the open field? i mean it with my full chest when i say it’s genius. the raw terror of the latter is perfectly in line with the trauma of the original movie when the birds are cowering in the grass and one of them goes mad with fear, starts screaming “he’s getting closer, i can’t take it” while the others are frantically whispering “don’t fly, don’t fly”, and is killed when she leaves her hiding spot. - we know beyond a doubt that the hunter was using an instrument to mimic the call of a doe because ronno mentions it when he’s boasting about seeing a hunter with a stick that changed his voice. that wasn’t just a pointless bit of dialogue to introduce him as an antagonist - it held vital information, and showed that he wasn’t a liar after all. even if he only heard that story from an older deer, the information is absolutely true. ronno was an excellent antagonist because he was fundamentally just a sad, lonely fawn who didn’t know how to make friends and thought that maybe impressing them might work.

this is the first time i'm going to have to hard disagree with you, and tbh i think you were overly critical/harsh with this film. (e.g. you had an issue with bambi freezing in the face of danger when that's something deer actually do and that plenty of humans are also guilty of.) personally, i loved it as a kid, and i still love it now. it's my second favorite sequel after TLK 2. the songs are still stuck in my head ("there is love" and "first sign of spring" are great), the relationship development between father/son is solid, the "fakeout death" actually made me emotional even in spite of me knowing bambi wasn't dead, which marks a GOOD execution of it imo.

I love this movie, it’s a huge part of my childhood. It has so many parts about it that I love, the music, the plot, the character development. It is the same deer from the original movie which as a kid I loved that they did that. Bambi losses his mother and he is ends up having to live with his father. Which is a very powerful message, in general male deers having nothing to do with their off spring so having a very old respectable character in this universe take on the role of a caretaker for Bambi is such a emotional thing. Throughout the movie Bambi tries to find ways to impress his father so he can create a much better bound with him and having his father be genuinely proud of his son. I love how this movie isn’t goofy and fun the entire time, I think it’s important to have animated movies for children than talk about family issues. Yes, thumper, flower and faline could be seen as annoying but they are just like the original characters from the first film. Bambi never had to worry about being a “man” until he lost his mother which has changed his character to so he wants to be more brave and masculine to prove his worth to his father and show his rival that he is not a push over. When Bambi is sent away his father was worried about the image he was portraying and that he was becoming “soft” because the males don’t take care of the fawns and it is not the norm. He wanted Bambi to have a mother when all bambi wanted was to stay with his true family. I love this movie, the music, all the fun and serious parts. This movie holds a very special place in my heart. And yes, the ending made me cry because we actually see that Bambi’s father loved the mother and tried to do this part to continue the life he had even after her death but his son has fully changed his perspective on what being a father is. I AM THAT PERSON WHO LOVES BAMBI, IM A BAMBI STAN, I EXITST

But it’s actually much more enjoyable than something like Pocahontas 2... Also, I think you are a bit unfair to the “fake mom call scene”. It’s obvious they were referring to deer call that hunter often use to lure deer into shooting range, which I found pretty clever. The dog attack in the same scene was... Rather unrealistic since hunters don’t just let dog run over a deer they about to shoot (also who the hell would hunt a fawn???), but hey the first bambi’s hunting scene weren’t realistic either.
