I just learned about this scene and I watched it around 50 times over the past week. It's mesmerizing. First because of Patel's performance, but mostly because of Ana's expressions. Think of this as a real situation. She's an actress on a talk show and she needs to play along. At 3:10, when the song begins, she's thinking "well, let's do this, it's a bit uncomfortable, but I'm on national TV so I should play charming". At 3:30, after the first verse, she realizes "wait, what is this? is this real?". At 3:40, just after the bridge, literally, 10 seconds later, her defenses are down and she's refraining to fall in love right at that very moment. Pause the video, look at her, she's completely vulnerable. At 3:45, she smirks, going from incredulity to vulnerability to confidence about this person who is singing to her. Then we turn to Lily James, whose acting is great, too; reading the whole thing and realizing she lost every chance. At 4:11, the song ends, and James Corden is shocked and unresponsive. Ana has fully melted and does this little jump and this thing with her hand. Adorable, truly in love in almost exactly one minute. Excellent performance. This would have been the best scene in the movie, but I can understand why they cut it. It would have changed the whole film.

They fucked up towards the end. It was progressing really well, then the director decided that he wasn't interested in shooting anymore.

To be fair this love triangle was removed because it wasn't received well during screenings. Now, we see one scene here, and love it on its own, but I have to trust they removed it because it simply didn't work as part of the whole. And that the audiences who judged it not function well, was just as interested as us in as good a movie as possible.

Unfortunately, the movie had other problems - such as Lily James' character "believing he can make it" and that sometimes "miracles happen" and then NOT going with him as his manager when it does - that made me watch this scene wishing it had been in there. You're probably totally right that with it, the movie was worse. But because I feel the movie was a letdown, it makes this one glimpse look great

The whole original story/script was from someone who had been writing screenplays for over a decade and never got them made into movies. So he wondered that if star wars never existed and he was the only one to remember it and tried to get it made if it would have still been successful. In the end he decided that no, it wouldn't be. So he changed it to the beetles and wrote the screenplay to thid movie but Jack never ended up becoming successful despite being the only musician to remember the beetles because their success was more than just the songs they wrote. Studio bought it and made jack successful anyway because it's "better" and they fumbled the ball trying to make the ending work.

I still love this movie for the love it displays for the beauty of the Beatles. The scene with a alive and old John Lennon was heavenly. Not a perfect movie but what is.

This is conveyed through facial expressions and eyes so vulnerable that it speaks to all our humanity. The true shame is that Danny Boyle didn't see that he could have left it at that, just this scene - no more - no triangle love interest - just a moment between two people - famous or not.

I wish they put the whole songs in for some of them. It socks that they decided to shorten every song to just one verse and chorus. The shorter songs like Yesterday and Something should've just been full versions.

This scene would have worked in isolation though. Somebody being moved by a beautiful song - it didn't have to lead anywhere. Also - not really sure why Jack having another love interest would make his character become more unlikable - especially since he would have been on the rebound from Ellie at the time and he ultimately went back to her at the end. IMO Ellie's story arc was more unlikable. She rejected Jack, lead Gavin on then dumped Gavin to go back to Jack at the end of the movie - yet they kept that in.

For me it's those moments she stops smiling and forgets she's on live television, just listens. The other actress conveying what looks like legitimate turmoil/heartbreak when you know she's looking at the random homescreen of a laptop is pretty astounding to boot.

The Beatles changed culture and changed music. Books describe it. But Sting just said that it was Beatles succeeding with their own songs that gave him & others permission to choose that path in life (see Rick Beato channel interview with Sting 2021).

Well, they have been friends since they were children, so it would be hard to have this kind of chemistry. Their friendship and obvious love were very well done though imo. It really felt like they were close close friends. It's just unrealistic because how could anyone not fall in love with Lily James.

Then you watch historic footage while George struggles so hard to figure out the 2nd line.. Attracts me like no cauliflower .... like no pomegranite.. He needed something with 4 syllables, and to us it just seems so obvious ... ".. like no OTHER LOVER.." No one comes up with a song that brilliant on the spot - no one.

In the Get Back documentaries, you can see Paul come up with Get Back on the spot. Sure, it was a very raw version with incomplete lyrics, but amazing to see.

But that was the point throughout the film was that none of the songs were for her. Theres the scene where shes in the bedroom, and shes like Im not in any of these columns. So I think the scene got cut for time, and it was pretty redundant.

mxviii that’s very true, however I felt she never really “believed” it. She wanted to move on, and got a boyfriend but he was just a scape goat. This scene I assumed came quite early once he got famous and you see the part where her heart sunk. This would have been too early for their downfall. There was also a aftersex scene with Jack and one of the producers that was cut too.

I disagree!!!! They could have made a relationship between him and Roxanne start, but quickly end when he tells her that the song was for Something else; meaning he should have sung it to someone else. They fucked up by not going that direction. A complicating love factor always makes for a better story line. Bottom line, the director and writers got lazy!

I think the scene got cut to add to the narrative of him being paranoid about stealing the Beatles songs. The scene that's in the movie instead does a better job showing his growing paranoia about being found out.

the real reason is that they showed the movie to test audiences with two love interests, they didn't like it. So they cut the second love interest, Ana.

Yep - they didn't have to expand on the whole love triangle aspect - but this specific scene could have easily been left in. Who is betting this came down to money. If they included her in the movie. even just a single scene - she would have likely been paid more.

The dream sequence aspect was brought in later on, the scenes we see are directly taken from this deleted scene.

They should've kept this scene and kept the love triangle. Maybe just toned it down a bit and not make it so serious. They could've cut a lot of the Los Angeles scenes. I hated those the most, especially the scenes with that agent lady.
