@Evocati Augusti (PLVS VLTRA) actually, what made up the air force's mind was the fact that Lockheed's prototype was a much more proper and reliable aircraft, while the 23 had the feeling of something more like a technology demonstrator with crappy landing gear and such. They were worried about going with Northrop and dealing with major growing pains and project delays. The 23 was both very outside the box, but also more true to what the AF ordered. Lockheed went out of their way to provide super maneuverability (not req'd in the specs) because they knew their clientele much better than Northrop and that they would go nuts for the thrust vectoring. Northrop was punished for thinking like engineers and scientists, while Lockheed was rewarded for thinking like businessmen.

This will be a very interesting match and test of concept. Honestly I feel like if the budget wasn't an issue we could have had both the F-22 and F-23 in service with one eventually becoming the main craft. The YF-22 and YF-23 had their strengths, like much better maneuverability, slightly lower costs vs slightly better range, speed, and stealth, Raptor was the better plane and better for filled the goals for the ATF, but Black Widow was very much missed... probably would have been a better interceptor due to it losing the maneuverability battle to Raptor (all though still better than everything else) it was slightly faster, could fly slightly further, and was slightly more stealthy (smaller than the Raptor's marble/bumblebee sized RCS). YF-23, or the production F-23 makes sense as a extremely high performance fighter interceptor, where F-22 would be a extremely high performance air superiority fighter, complementing each other. Just my thoughts...
@totalnerd5674
@totalnerd5674 Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the age of interceptor is over, but in this case the F-23 is already an exceptional superiority fighter. Also, I don't really think there was all that much difference in capabilities between the aircraft. Sure, the F-22 was a little more maneuverable, but the F-23 was also exceptionally nippy, too. Yes, the F-23 had a smaller RCS, but when both are so small that an enemy has to get within 15 miles just to lock, it doesn't really matter anyway.
@nathaniellazo5912
@nathaniellazo5912 Жыл бұрын
@@totalnerd5674 Yah, I agree that the interceptor age is long been over, but I mean it would fill a interceptor role better, due to it having the slight advantages in speed/range. Yah, both are Amazing fighters, but Raptor would have the advantage up close, and is the better overall dog fighter, but even the slight delay-detection advantage could make a difference in stealth on stealth action, anything else, then yah, I agree it makes no difference at all being something like 0.002 vs 0.001.

Should go watch the video of Paul Metz talking about both planes. He flew the YF-23 as test pilot for Northrup, then was hired by Lockheed to fly the F-22 during development. He says that the YF-23 did not need thrust vectoring due to the absolutely massive tailerons. Both aircraft could sustain 60 degrees AoA. The YF-23 tailerons were basically the main wings of the F5 or F18 and able to deflect 40 degrees. Thrust vectoring does come into play when aerodynamic flight envelopes are no longer being used and thrust vectoring is all that can affect the aircraft. The entire engine of the YF-23 including burners were enclosed inside the fuselage of the jet significantly reducing heat signature. YF-23 was superior in just about every way. F-22 won by his reasoning because lockheed was the better salesman. Northrup was all engineering focused. Lockheed made sure to fire a missile and get photos of the plane flying at 60 degrees AoA. Many of the people choosing the winner have no engineering background, so the pretty pictures and videos of the F-22 doing fighter jet stuff and never before seen maneuvering sealed the deal. Northrup put all that stuff in their engineering brief, lockheed showed that stuff.

I wish the ATF program would recognise what they had with BlackWidow. Raptor is a great plane and it deserves itt's wings but Widow should have been developed further. Maybe the Navy could pick it up as long range interceptor to replace the Tomcat... unfortunately it did not happen and all that potential was wasted.

@Gyyghhhhjjjkk

Nope not at all. It was because Northrop was simply notorious for being bad at marketing and handling large projects and Lockheed was known to carry out and handling well in larger projects. Also f22 was more conventional and its weapons bay actually worked in test flight and yf 23 had extreme issues when firing its missile.
@DrsharpRothstein
@DrsharpRothstein Жыл бұрын
Many years after the ATF program selection, it has been leaked that it was in the best interests of the United States for Lockheed to be awarded the production contract. With the end of the Cold War and declining defense budgets, it was impossible to keep all the contractors in business. (All the contractors are now owned by two companies). So, awarding the ATF contract to Lockheed would keep them in the defense airframe business. If Northrop was awarded the ATF, America would only have one company building military jets. The judging for the ATF contract made it impossible to claim 'one of the aircraft' better than the other. (Not necessarily a bad way to award the contract, especially at that time.) So the awarding criteria could be based on something other than aircraft performance.
@Gyyghhhhjjjkk
@Gyyghhhhjjjkk Жыл бұрын
@@DrsharpRothstein no it wasn’t the case. It was because Northrop was a horrible marketer when it comes to demonstration and US simply had more trust in Lockheed producing the plane since they handled previous projects extremely well. @@memememine1 While the F-22 had a very slight advantage in TR, it lacked the speed stealth payload/WS aircraft integration system (basically giving the YF-23 the ability to act in the same manner the OH-58 Kiowa did for pre longbow targeting systems Apaches) allowing the YF-23 to pair with older fighters and or squadrons of fighters and newer fighter upgrades being made to F-14's F-15s F-16's F-18's F-117's and the entire medium and heavy bomber squadrons of the day and later developed aircraft. Something the F-22 has never and continues not to be able to do, the F-22 while a good fighter is very linear and does one or two things well the YF-23 was a multi role platform that did a bunch of things the F-22 couldn't do, very well. The consensus is that politics and not the abilities of either platform was the deciding factor as is more often the case than not in weapons procurement in the US the last seven decades or so.

For those who claim F-22 is more manoeuvrable than YF-23, look up Paul Metz, the only pilot in the world to have flown both planes, and a test pilot, who helps write manuals for fighter pilots to learn about their aircraft. He says that F-22 is only slightly more agile at very low speeds, and at all other speeds, YF-23 was no less agile, and depending on airspeed, at times more agile. So in real life, YF-23 is probably going to be a slightly superior dogfighter. It matches and is slightly superior to the Raptor, without thrust vectoring. This means you can get a slightly better dogfighter but with a significantly maintenance cost.

It's worth noting the YF-23 was a prototype, not the production model. To be completely fair it should have gone up against a YF-22, which was significantly worse. the YF-23 was greatly stealthier, and its enormous tail (bigger than an F-16s wing) gave it a serious edge in nose authority against the YF-22 without thrust vectoring. even with thrust vectoring the YF-23 wasn't far behind in kinematics. Those Tiles on the Widows exhaust are also a sort of ablative cooling system that would cool the exhaust to lower its IR signature

No. The YF23 lacks weapon bay capacity. It cannot carry short rage AAMs and it could only carry 3 amraams. If it evolves into F-23 it will enlarge its fuselage and it will gain lots of weight. There is no way it could maneuver as well as a Raptor.

Then there's the problem that the YF-23 wasn't even close to a finished product so it wouldn't have been remotely competitive in a fight - it was a prototype that needed years of development to turn it into a viable fighter, just like the YF-22.

The official simba fan club would like to note that the airframes were tested against each other in simulations and the F22 won because reasons valued viewers. This was simply a contest of pilot skill and our peoples champion Simba Wimba Kun came out on top, just like he did in the fastest jet video in his F16. Famous.

Hey guys, I recently stumbled about the Peregrine missile and I was wondering if you are going to have a look at it, for as far as you can with available data. Being able to double the amount of missiles in a F-22 or F-35 will be huge, I assume.

Idea: How would a USN ARG escorted by a Destroyer Squadron (or CDG) operating in the South China Seas fair against a Chinese strike? Examples: USS Makin Island (ARG) and USS America (ARG) frequently operate independently from CSGs within the Indo-Pacific. Most recently, USS Makin Island completed a tour in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand as part of a joint exercise with ASEAN partners. USS America frequently makes tours down to Okinawa, and is presently operating around the Philippines. In both recent examples, both ARGs were operating far from the supporting cover of the USS Ronald Reagan and its supporting CDG.

I wish that plane got the contract instead of the F-22. In a lot of areas the 23 beat the 22 but congress was so upset at Northrop for the delays and huge overages on the B-2 Spirit they gave it to Lockheed

I was stationed at Edward's AFB, I remember the YF-23 sitting in the dirt just of the shoulder of the taxiway for several months, the engines has been removed. This was after it lost the competition for which aircraft the AF wanted. It was all dirty and dusty, looked like an abandoned car. I always wondered why it had been left there. Security was so lax back then that I'll bet I could have hooked a tow strap to it and drug it away.

Rumors were that parts of engineering process and even some of the airframe geometry and components, although absolutely adequate and perhaps superior to the Raptor's at the time, were fledgling concepts that could be made much better with further development, and maybe even had hypersonic applications. Further rumors suggest that much of what didn't make it directly into the Raptor program ended up being developed further into what eventually became the top submissions to the NGAD projects. Rumors that may be somewhat confirmed by the seemingly ridiculous rate at which supposedly a demonstrator was constructed and flown for that program. I only bring up because, well, the F-23 was gorgeous and revolutionary even compared to the F-22. In some ways, the F-22 is a legacy fighter concept that successfully integrated stealth tech, but the F-23 was a radical departure from traditional fighter geometry, more akin to what the Russian were trying to do with the SU-47. I think it will be nice to look at what comes out of the upcoming NGAD programs and know that they have F-23 DNA, and if so, then their legacy will live on as more than just a near what-if and the F-22's only real competitor.

The AI Raptor pilots were simply terrified :D I'm with you Cap on the Widow. I was a teen when the models came out and I wanted a model of this jet more than any I'd ever wanted one in my life. Shame that the only reason the Raptor won was stupid politics because most commentators on documentaries I've watched on this all say the Widow was superior.

F-22 is a better dog fighter and the 23 is only marginally better in speed and stealth (than the prototype F-22). The Raptor has a much better weapons capacity than the 23

So on hindsight the USAF was fighting SU-27/35 so besides politics (Northrop was always overbudget), they probably felt they needed a better dogfighter and YF-22 had thrust vectoring. For NGAD where dogfighting is lower priority than stealth/range/payload, I think a cross between YF-23 and B-21 is possible. I always preferred the YF-23 and I thot it would have better potential for upgradability against the SU-57 & J-20 now. I guess after the encounter between the F-35 & J-20 last year, the USAF has some idea on how stealthy the Chinese fighter is.
