Is there a mod of the NASA F-15 they upgraded?

I was at the faceoff competition at Edward's AFB in '90 between the Raptor and the Widow II (dad was on the F-23 development team). The Widow definitely had an aerodynamic edge over the Raptor, and an equal thrust to weight ratio, it didnt need thrust vectoring capabilities due to the design of the tail/stabilizer layout, however a semi-adjustable tailpipe design was being worked on, to be coupled with the tail config, which was theorized to result it even better thrust vectoring abilities than the Raptor. The second prototype 23 (Grey Ghost) is at my local air museum in California, I drive past her everyday going to and from work

Funny considering the YF-23's looks and the similarity of designation but using the Blackbird strategy of "outrun whatever they shoot at you" really worked in its favor!

It’s neat to see the YF23 from the perspective of pilots flying against it. The F22 looks like an advanced jet fighter. The YF23 looks like an alien spacecraft.

The production F-23 was to have two seperate weapons bays rather than the one weapons bay which the prototype YF-23 has. I think the viewer meant that the production model could carry 10 missiles internally, which would make sense given the Raptors real life payload as only 4 BVRAAMs is not a lot for a CAP aircraft. Furthermore there are even some who have said that the plane could theoretically carry up to 10 AIM-120 AMRAAMs depending on the design of the weapons bay.

Pilots in YF-23 were so gentle to the Warbirds staying level 😉 They could have use they power to climb luring wwrbirds into following them then dive on them when stalling like Japanese in WWII before F6F Hellcat arrives

The production model would have been able to fit 6 BVRAAMS internally, however you can't reproduce this on the YF-23 you have. The production model of the YF-23, the F-23A, would have been a bit longer, it would have had much smaller engine humps (the humps were bigger to potentially fit thrust reversers that were never installed). It's tail would also have had a slightly differently shaped trailing edge on its tail to simplify production. However the important part is that increase ins size, and with it, internal volume, that's where the extra space for internal missiles would come from, with a little reshuffling of fuel or avionics there would be space for the 6 amraams.

Simba needs to acquire vertical fighting capability. Do the 109 thing. It takes only a minute or 2 to get into a good shooting position even without afterburner. It's important to not dive too early in an attempt to increase turn rate. That is going to f up the geometry. Collapse your turn radius at the top instead (get slow and/or turn out of plane), and use gravity to bring the nose down. Trying to explain this in text format is hopeless but one can always try.

For the radar cross section, The lack of air separators on the engine intakes made a big difference and the whole place styling and angles made a small difference, all adding up to a significantly reduce radar cross section compared to the raptor. But it wasn’t just that the radar cross section was smaller than the f22, it’s the pattern. The yf23 pattern was not solid like other planes, but instead appeared like a spider web, which would confuse radar detectors. Hence the nickname, black widow. No doubt radar algorithms would have eventually changed in time if that plane was chosen, but in the immediate future no plane, ship, or Sam would consider it for a lock.

There is an incredible YF-23 fan community that believes to their core it would have provided much more value to the warfighter. Any effort you make to bring us the best ATF would be amazing. This means both F-23A and the GE120 which was much more powerful at 39,000 pounds compared to the Raptor 35,000 In terms of speed the YF-23 was aeroruled design would have allowed it to supercruise much faster then the Raptor. Technically the F-22 can reach Mach 1.82 in 100% military trust without afterburner. However the F-22 don’t do this for 2 reasons. The design was optimized for Mach 1.5 to be its optimum cruising speed and the close coupled engines tend to overheat. The YF-23 design is both optimized for higher cruising speed and has wider spaced engines allowing it to stay fast without overheating. So not only could the F-23A supercruise around Mach 2 but it could keep it. The absolute maximum speed would not be much more than that as it would be limited by the fixed design of its intakes and the temperature limit of the stealthy materials on its leading edges The more efficient and lower drag design coupled with the powerfully actuated and large area V tails would also allow it to turn at greater G and higher speed. This is vastly understated capability which essentially allows the Black Widows to effectively dogfight in supersonic speeds making short range missiles unusable in all but head on and the Gun completely useless. I hope the final design of the F-23A would make it to DCS one day

At airshows you see these super maneuverability fighters almost come to a stop and turn on a dime in the opposite direction. The ones in DCS do not seem to have the same characteristics?

The YF23 is the most badass looking fighter aircraft never made. It is a shame it was not chosen but even if it had it would have cost more to produce then the extremely pricey F22. lol.
