I examine the relationship between yin-yang balance and how female characters are stereotyped in popular culture.

This really makes me think. Misogyny has been ingrained so deeply in dominant media. It’s great to be able to engage in critical perspectives to unlearn the toxicity

Kind of random but Tilda Swinton looks better in fairy tale/super natural roles than ordinary ones. She is so ethereal looking! I remember seeing her in a vintage role too and it was a great fit too.

I also wonder if female villains being depicted as more yang dominant has to do with the patriarchal idea that villains should have masculine characteristics, for example, dominance. For so long, society has associated dominant traits with masculinity, and is uncomfortable with the idea of a woman having dominant traits, and therefore, a purely feminine villain. It's the notion that an independent woman who doesn't want a man in her life must be a witch.

Amazing video! I'm from Sevilla (Spain), Dramatic. And because of my jewish-like features when I was a child, felt that only villains have the same feautures than me... It's horrible the xenofobia in hollywood, Disney, etc

Please create a part 2 if you can. This is so incredibly helpful for me as an actor. I am a mixture of classic and soft natural essence and that does make sense - people put me in these roles as the girl next door or a princess unthreatening type. It’s so interesting to play against it as well. Thank you for this video!

Yes! I haven't seen anyone else discussing this and it boggles the mind. You nailed it! For Kitchener essences-- Ethereal: Similar to ingénue essence in that they are kept in this stasis or put on a pedestal and otherwise drained of all sensuality, but one has a sensation of terror and awe with some portrayals. (Extremely here for the terror and awe. Love that.) The urge to nerf or depower characters with this essence is something I've never understood. Ingénue: Yes, you are correct, ingénues are kept in this des*xualized limbo before being packed off into marriage or what have you (creep alert! Creep alert!). One of my favorite inversions of this (please check your male gaze at the door) is where someone is given all the outward trappings of an ingénue but expresses themselves in an antiheroic or downright villainous way. This is perfection when done correctly. Gamine: Similar drainage of sensuality plus the aforementioned Peter Pan/manic pixie thing plus the pressure to be "one of the boys". Don't start me on some of the combos and their stereotyping. Gamine/classic (private school tomboy) is often bossy and a little too into frou-frou sports. Gamine/natural will snap her suspenders and give you some platitude about wanting to stay on the farm with Pa and the boys. Gamine/dramatic, meantime, is a little punk rocker who loves nothing better than to jam out to some indie band while scoffing at the more traditional (!!!) girlies. Romantic: The things you already covered. Need I say more? The official description is "I long to be touched". This is uncomfortably close to "Well, she was asking for it". (Yecch!) Classic: Otherwise known as the safe option or good girl, likewise already covered. Natural: Correct, often typecast as "girl next door", although I've also seen a lot of "wild elemental woman" typecasting. "Wild elemental woman", similar to "girl next door", isn't obviously problematic. It does, however, lead to uncomfortable male gaze-y stereotypes and assumptions about how much the onlooker can get away with before this person's boundaries are violated. Dramatic: Yes, you summed it up perfectly; even in real life women who crank the visual yang up to eleven face certain prejudices based on their presentation. Thank you again for a great video!

Love your content and how you come up with fresh approaches to show how Kibbe & body typing can help us better understand stereotypes and prejudices. *hugs*

Very interesting! It explains the yin gatekeeping, covert shoulder/width shaming, and reluctance to accept natural typing going on in alot of the Kibbeverse. It's fun to learn about style theories, but there's definitely a negative underbelly running rampant in some spaces that is likely shaped by these archetypes you spoke about.

You have a well thought out, intelligent presentation. It makes me wonder if I also sometimes view myself within a stereotype in response to how other people treat me. Has this become a part of my self-identity and do I really want it to be there or not.

So interesting! I feel the manic Pixie dream girl is often portrayed by ingenue/quirky gamine essence too.

I think a lot of these concepts apply to male characters as well, although with some differences. “Natural” male characters are usually more valued than “romantic” ones… EVEN THOUGH they both pass the same concepts as the natural and romantic female characters. What do I mean by that? It’s that… a laid back chill dude is seen as cool and nice, but also strong, while a small and romantic male character will most likely be perceived as fragile and naive, which for a man is not considered ideal traits (socially). However the difference between sharp x soft and evil x good is pretty consistent in male roles as well. Look at Scar x Mufasa, Hercules x Hades, Jafar x Aladdin, even Prince Hans x Kristoff! That’s also present in the selection of actors for some roles, like how Alan Rickman was mostly chosen to play villains. And even when Benedict Cumberbach play heroes they are usually arrogant and kinda narcissistic (like Doctor Strange and Sherlock). About gamines, same thing, I think it’s very difficult to imagine Martin Freeman playing an villain role, and all of his characters are kinda quirky in some way, even if slightly. Also they will never be perceived as the sexiest character in the room. A lot of these has to do with the teachings in “character creation”. They literally teach us abou “the power of shapes” to convey inner character traits of the characters. So… like… inverted triangles (super sharp) convey instability and danger, they reminds us of dangerous things like claws, sharp teeth, knives, spikes, etc, great for villains. Circles (soft) conveys safety, softness, etc, so great for naive characters. Squares are linked to stability, so they are great for close minded characters (like Carl from Up!) or grounded but not extraordinary characters (like Pacha, from Emperor’s New Groove). You can also see this being applied in Gru (despicable me) which presents both extremely sharp features (making him look like a villain), but also round and wide features (showing that he has a soft and caring side).

I really agree with with this, irl I’ve seen people react to more yang-leaning women with a lot of negativity, like assuming they were being judgmental when they were just minding their business. And even taking their mere presence as a threat to the status quo of men’s imagined superiority! That might sound absurd to some people, but I’m not exaggerating. While I realise there’s big downsides, I lowkey wish I had that affect on people. I’m not sure of my kibbe type but I have the kind of curves you can’t just disguise or cover up, even when I was very underweight due to sickness (I’m better now). I’ve consistently been sexualised simply for existing. After a guy complained that he was “struggling with lust” and had a crush on me I was rebuked in a very manipulative way for over an hour by a religious leader. They said my body was inherently more sexual than other people’s and that I needed to dress accordingly 🤢 This wasn’t even at an event with a dress code! They were trying to police my dress in my day to day life, which is controlling to the extent that it’s literally a sign of a cult. Less curvy women were allowed to break stated dress codes as much as they liked at events that had them. I could follow them to a T, overcompensate, and still be shamed and punished every time. Racism and fatphobia also determined who experienced this. Luckily I’ve had very few of these problems in secular workplaces! Most of the men have had a lot of dad energy with me (I was often younger, and actually the youngest at one workplace), the women and non binary people have all been chill and many of them have looked out for me Dress codes are so often used to disguise sexual harassment. And concepts like rbf are used to prevent women from relaxing even just a little, I don’t experience that but I believe it’s very harmful. I’ve never seen the impact of that type of criticism discussed in depth, but I imagine being prevented from relaxing fully, especially if someone’s criticised to the point that they start to police themselves, could affect people’s stress levels and ability to rest long term which is so damaging to health

You are 100% FG in the kibbe system you look EXACTLY LIKE KElly Osbourne she is a kibbe verfied FG. Besides you are too small and not enough width for the natrual family. However you have natural essence. And kibbe and Mcjimssy have both mentioned that G and N family have same essence sometimes. Remember as a gamine you will have some B answers in your body.

You are so amazing at breaking down the kibbe system and typing others. I love this video so much. There is a reason why the villains are Dramatics because the Dramatic family has that needed intimidation in the role. And Snow white is 100% SG not R. As horrible as it sounds these are based on our real life experiences with people we meet. Every dramatic women I have meet has majority of times been a confident powerful women in some sort of high earing cooperation job and alot of SG, R and Ingenues girls I have meet have been very sweet and submissive or easily trusting and kinder than other.
