Agreed. The voice is an instrument like any other. It has to be practiced, tuned, warmed up, and played from the heart. Her range is stunning, no doubt. But, how she uses her instrument is extraordinary. I've never heard anything like it. It makes me smile, laugh, cry, gasp, giggle, stutter, squeal, and much more. Very few musicians can evoke so much emotion with their instrument. She is in the same league as Miles Davis, Dizzie Gillespie, Jimi Hendrix, Maybelle Carter, Prince, Eddie Van Halen and any other instrumentalist considered a master. Unreal.

At times, I’d wondered, when would the flute and voice end, it was like I couldn’t differentiate one instrument from the other, the blending of the two were phenomenal, the way she’d leave a note was as if the flute and the voice shared the same passaggio. Exquisite!

alguien me comento que el mejor cantante era dimash, y yo, no estaba de acuerdo lei los comentarios que hacian y alguien menciono a yma sumac, la busque, la escuche, y me enamore de su voz, de su personalidad, era es y sera una princesa inca, si no la pudimos conocer en nuestra epoca, esto de la tecnologia es una de las bendiciones y ventajas que ahora la podamos escuchar y ver sus videos,,, puede ser que haya otros cantantes y no dudo que sean buenos,, y de que hayan mejores,,, no se, no los he escuchado con ese timbre, pero sin duda para mi es la que mejor me gusta, la amo

My high school Spanish teacher had a whole collection of Yuma Sumac LP’s. Everyone once in awhile she’d take time out of the class and play them for a treat. We were a mostly unappreciative audience, but now I recognize what an amazing talent she was. Yma Sumac, that is, and also my teacher for putting up with us.

This shows that the voice is an instrument like any other. It needs to be tuned, warmed up, practiced, stretched, and taken care of. Yma should be considered a master of her instrument. She was the best, and is in the same company as Jimi Hendrix, Rachmaninov, Mozart, Prince, and all the other masters. Yma Sumac is in a league of her own!

Escuché a una Rusa cantar "El quinto elemento", en vivo, y lo hizo maravillosamente, detalle por detalle. Lo cual no quita nada al hecho, de que Yma sea la mejor, y que habría sido un gustazo, escuchar por ella esa melodía.

@@Darkcom nah no compares la de Mozart es un aria promedio hay un montón de artistas que la pueden cantar hasta las niñas de shows de talento. yma era otro nivel eso para ella era pan comido. Ella va más allá y perfectamente podría cantar la de la peli del quinto elemento porque es mucho más difícil que la de Mozart. Quieres escuchar arias difíciles? Escucha las de vivaldi del periodo barroco, esas son tan difíciles que solo existen unos cuantos intérpretes que las pueden cantar y jamás las escucharás en programas de canto amateur porque solo los profesionales pueden cantarlas luego de años de entrenamiento. No dudo que yma podría haberlo hecho si se hubiesen descubierto en su tiempo, lastima.

@@liliaesperanza4436 el aria de la reina de la noche es una de las canciones incluidas en el disco dorado en la sonda Voyager, y no es porque sea una cancion promedio, sino todo lo contrario xd. tambien esta una cancion del Peru, en quechua, que no es dificil de cantar pero que tiene mucho sentimiento y es muy bonita, y en fin de cuentas pienso que comentas piedras.

Looking back through time, the real pity is that Ima Sumac - an extraordinary gifted prima donna, stellar talent - didn't have a chance to have serious, classical opera training, that could catapult her to become the greatest dramatic soprano of all times in her own cloud of eternal glory above all, instead being somewhat lost in between genres and changing tastes of pop and salon culture. Just imagine her as Norma, Turandot, Aida, Lady Macbeth, or Esclarmonde... I have goosebumps simply trying to imagine that.

Watching her in this video, she most certainly had at least >some< classical training. She learned somewhere to control her vibrato, and also to sing through her nose for the very high notes.

La gente piensa que cantar sólo es ejecutar una nota. No señores, es eso y mucho más. Es respirar bien, transmitir, es tecnica vocal, es concentracion, afinar, es armonizar y hacer que todo se mire facil tan facil como en este video. Alguien se detiene a pensar y analizar la magistral y prodigiosa forma de ejecutar esos estacatos a esa velocidad? Sin duda alguna no hay comparación, Yma suma es un paradigma en si.

No solo fue una gran Cantante sino que tuvo un extraordinario oído Musical, pues aquí canta a Dúo con la Flauta sin desafinar en ningún momento a pesar de que ella emitía notas Distintas a las de la Flauta, y de manera veloz y simultánea. ¡Todo un Prodigio!

She was what the word diva is all about. I don't remember the name of the movie but there was a movie where she was out of frame singing and another woman asked her own servant to go ask her when was she going to stop singing as it was bothering her. The servant returned only to tell the woman that she said she would stop singing when the song was over. Diva.

Something many people doesnt know nowdays is, Yma SUmac was actually a direct sibling from the Senior Inca Atahualpa, so she had noble Inca blood. Not even in my country (Perú) The people still remember this.

Inca with fair skin and green-blue eyed? Impossible. A great Peruvian (and international) artist, with a lot fantasy around, created by marketing professionals of record companies. I adore her for her music and art. The visuals and stories are just "fantasy creations". It's the same type of thing that was made with Margarita Carmen Cansino, aka Rita Hayworth...

De hecho ella vivió en la época adecuada. La búsqueda de los exótico inició en los 40s. Ella empezó como Imma Sumack en 1941. El auge de la exótica fue en los 50s. Ella ya como Yma Súmac lanzaba famosos álbumes. La lírica era de los géneros favoritos hasta los 60s. Este video es de 1960. El rock empezaba a expandirse por el globo. Yma grabó Miracles en 1971. Yo creo que si Yma hubiera sido milenial, aún habría dizque artistas que la opacarían. Su talento sería alabado pero no tan difundido como ocurrió en los 50 y 60.

It often seems that when sopranos sing some of the higher notes, they rely on heavy vibrato to cover up deviations from the intended note. But in this piece, there's nowhere to hide. Those notes have to be super precise. It's very impressive.
