Eddie Cantor introduces Yma Sumac who sings an Inca hymn, a thousand years old, entitled "Hymn to the Sun Virgin". Air date September 9, 1950, a live performance on the first Colgate Comedy Hour. She became an international success based on her extreme vocal range. Yma Sumac sold more than 40 million records which makes her one of the best-selling Latin Americans in history and the best-selling Peruvian in history. She was one of the most famous exponents of exotica music during the 1950s. Mastered from 16mm kinescope film.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would ever see Yma Sumac performing Taita Inty live in 1950, yet here I am, miraculously. This should be in a museum somewhere, it is simply astonishing.

This is absolutely magic. To see Yma performing Taita Inty at the beginning of her meteoric rise to global fame is just unimaginable and yet here we are. A vocal master with no equal. Live and direct, performing one of the most challenging pieces of music ever recorded. A masterpiece.

Que es esto¡¡¡¡¡¡ por favor...esta voz no es de este mundo...MAMA MIA, lo siento Dimash, Maria Callas, Sara Brahigman etc. Yma Sumac no tiene comparacion...es increible la versatilidad, el rango vocal, la amplitud, la armonia, la divinidad y lo salvaje de su voz...una ves lei un comentario acerca de Yma Sumac al que en su momento no le di importancia, donde decian: que si hubiese habido un concurso de canto a nivel de planetas, Yma seria nuestra representante y de seguro lo ganaria...despues de escuchar este tema no tengo ninguna duda de que asi seria.

She was born Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chávarri del Castillo in 1922. Hollywood took this nice girl who wanted to be a folk singer, dressed her up and said she was a princess. And she acted like it. "Taita Inty" is not a 1,000 year old song. It was written by David Buttolph for the film "Secret of the Incas" in which she plays Kori-Tika.

PERO UNA VERGÜENZA NACIONAL que HASTA el día de hoy, NO HAY NI UNA ESTATUA, ALGÚN INSTITUTO, TEATRO, INSTITUCIÓN, NI UNA CALLE CON SU NOMBRE. ESO es seguir teniéndola en la indiferencia, apesar que a ella se le cerraron las puertas en Perú, siguió cantando canciones representativas del Perú, y de Sudamérica, como buena peruana y latinoamericana. Es una VERGÜENZA QUE EL ESTADO EN VEZ DE HABLAR DE HITLER NO HABLEN DE YMA.

@@TakittyLove de acuerdo contigo, leí que en esos años Perú le dio la espalda a Yma Sumac por nacionalizarse estadounidense (en esos años creo que el gobierno peruano era muy nacionalista) y no la tomaron en serio después de ello. Recién antes de que falleciera le dieron un reconocimiento pero no es suficiente. Prefieren a una Chabuca conocida en no más de 4 países del sur que a alguien como Yma Sumac de talla mundial. En Europa, Rusia le tienen demasiado amor a Yma. La misma Cher, Celine Dion consideran a Yma sumac como uno de sus referentes musicales.

@@lapeutea Si, sobretodo Cher ha hablado en más de una ocasión de ella. Pero no hay que comparar a Chabuca con Yma porque no hay necesidad, las 2 hicieron cosas distintas, es como comparar a Michael Jackson y David Bowie o sea ambos muy reconocidos pero ambos en sus propios géneros musicales, o Cuál es mejor? La Marinera o el Huayno? no se les puede comparar es imposible porque estan en diferentes géneros. Además Chabuca NO SOLO ES RECONOCIDA en Sudamérica. O por qué creen que en España creen que el Cajón es de ellos? porque Chabuca dió a conocer muchos elementos peruanos internacionalmente, como el Cajón en Europa, lean la historia de Paco de Lucía. En Francia han escuchado mucho a Chabuca. Chabuca fue la primera en unir el vals Peruano(de origen Criollo) con instrumentos Afro. Porque antes de ella NADIE tocaba vals criollo con Cajón, era imposible mezclar algo africano con algo criollo pero ella lo hizo y le dedicó canciones a gente afro siendo ella criolla porque admiró mucho a los Afro-peruanos, de ellos dijo: "ellos han tenido que convertir por siglos su sufrimiento en alegría, sino cómo vivir? cómo sobrevivir así? y nos dejaron a los peruanos estos ritmos negros, ritmos alegres" . Y cantó en varios idiomas como en francés. Fue la primera en denunciar el daño que los alcaldes estaban haciéndole al Centro Histórico de Lima, tumbándose casonas de historia por edificios que supuestamente traían "modernidad", en una canción "Zeño Manué" lo dice. CHABUCA e YMA nacieron "ad portas" del Centenario del Perú, y han aportado A SU MANERA mucho a la música Peruana. Imposible compararlas pero AMBAS MERECEN MAYOR RECONOCIMIENTO.

Cada vez que veo a Yma Sumac reniego de mi pais, ella debería tener un museo, debería ser declarada la peruana del siglo, debería tener un teatro a su nombre y su memoria se debería recordar cada año en un homenaje donde las generaciones la recuerden como el prodigio mundial único e irrepetible hasta el momento y no estoy exagerando. Incluso muchos que admiran a Dimash han cambiado de parecer al descubrir a Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarry del Castillo y lo que era capaz de hacer con su voz sin Auto-tune ni la tecnología actual y se lamentan no haber vivido la experiencia de escucharla hoy. Pero todo queda en "debería" y casi ningún muchacho del Perú sabe de ella, ninguna calle tiene su nombre, ningún feriado la conmemora e increíblemente su voz en el Perú fue silenciada por temas ideológicos . Ella se fue del Perú apenada porque su patria no la apoyó, todo lo contrario fue criticada por los eternos y estúpidos acomplejados llamados indigenistas de izquierda para variar, porque ella y Moisés Vivanco osaron cometer el "sacrilegio" de mezclar música del Ande con ritmos extranjeros como el Jazz y el mambo por ejemplo,. Hasta José María Arguedas despotrico de su talento y perdió el apoyo de todos o casi todos, hasta la catalogaron de traidora porque triunfo en EEUU en plena guerra fría, donde Comunismo y Capitalismo se enfrascaba en su lucha en América, pero su talento no tuvo fronteras ni prejuicios y llego lejos tanto que la propia URSS la lleva a varios concierto memorables, , allá la recuerdan hasta hoy y surgen cada talento que aman imitarla lo mejor que puedan. Solo tuvo un tibio reconocimiento de parte del Perú a dos años antes de su muerte, es en ese instante que ella demuestra que nunca perdió su amor por este pais de ingratos, rompe en llanto agradeciendo tan injusto y lánguido homenaje, pero ella fue feliz con tan poco, pues le bastó que la vida le regalo talento, fama y satisfacción de llevar al Perú por el mundo a pesar de las mezquindades, habrá que preguntarse porque hasta hoy no existe ninguna agenda del Estado donde ella tenga el sitial que le corresponde y que de una buena vez se enseñe en las escuelas su legado, ya basta de solo decir que ella es una Diva o un Icono. Alguien puede siquiera visitar su reliquias? Si ni siquiera este gobierno ni el anterior, ni el anterior se digno de pedir sus restos para que descanse en la tierra que tanto amo. No les importa. Yma Sumac talento Peruano nacido de la bella Cajamarca, que diferencia con la desgracia que hoy tenemos de Presidente nacido también de la bella Cajamarca, que se puede hacer. Luego nos quejamos porque estamos como estamos

Totalmente de acuerdo contigo, tamaña injusticia se cometio con ella en ese entonces y aun ahora persiste tal perjuicio por tanto resentido social que odia todo lo que venga y todo lo que triunfa en los Estados Unidos...El homenaje que le hicieron durante el gobierno de Toledo solo fue un acto hipocrita de lavado de conciencia, pero espero de corazon que ella lo haya disfrutado y se haya sentido bien, aunque nada rezarcira tal daño y lo que mas mas me golpea como peruano es: haberme dado cuenta que en cada interpretacion nos decia que amaba y extrañaba nuestro pais...Deberia haber un busto de ella en el ministerio o en el parque de la cultura, calles con su nombre, colegios con su nombre o su rostro en algun billete no lo se...El enemigo de un peruano es otro peruano...pero se me ocurre que tal ves se pueda hacer una convocatoria a peruanos que reconocemos a Yma Sumac como la voz mas grande de la historia y nos unimos para impulsar en el congreso algo de lo que e mencionado, aunque sea pos mortem, ella se lo merece.

Totalmente de acuerdo con todo lo que escribiste. Yma Sumac no solo debe de tener un museo o unas calles con su nombre o esculturas que al final estarán en un solo lugar, sino un billete impreso también. Siempre recuerdan a Chabuca, hacen documentales, plazas con el nombre de Chabuca pero por qué no hacen hasta ahora algo por Yma sumac?

Thank you for posting this song. It seems remarkable to me for 1952 television - especially a comedy variety show of the caliber of Eddie Cantor. He is a rara avis in his own right! Great performance by Yma Sumac! So fortunate to be able to view it in 2022.

Lo que hace en el 2:26, esa facilidad para hacer estacatos en notas muy agudas, me hace creer que de haberse escrito la música del 5to. Elemento en su época, fácil ella se aprendía las notas y las cantaba.

Brilliant natural talent. No autotune, no earpiece feedback, just vocal perfection. IMO Dimash Kudaibergen is her male counterpart.

@@lacteur1 That was not an opinion. In what way are Dimash and Sumac similar? They both have(had) wide vocal range and use(used) opera technique when it comes to head voice. And that's all. No need to compare them.

A lyric opera singer recreating Inca singing (in way not even Incas were singing.... that's for sure). Yma Sumac was quite an original person and a great classical opera singer, the way she found to gain presence in the field was to bring some exoticism (whatever Inca), as she actually spoke Quechua, and blend it with her lyric training. This and exotic costumes made it all up. That Incas ever sang like this.... it's highly speculative improbable.

Yma Sumac had an education at a catholic school (so....mmmmm that one of being music illiterate might not be exactly true). Also she was not exactly coming from some poor family out in rural Peru.... she was privileged Peruvian middle class... Indeed she had a unusual and extraordinary voice and absolute hearing (like so many can have)... but she would still be going around singing "marineras" if not met her husband, Moises Vivanco, a composer, musician, and the director of the Peruvian National Board of Broadcasting that cast her as the star of his musical group, the Compañia Peruana de Arte (let's say quite a posh push up as no one was really paying attention to Zoila Castillo, Yma's real name, in Peru at the time). Only after meeting her husband push up and moving to the US... she became famous. And she became famous mostly because of the US movie industry and thirst for exotic whatever at those times (in this case for something vaguely Inca, mostly just the Quechua and her clothing paraphernalia, (as Inca or vaguely related to Quechua, Aymara, or Amazonian she was not). You have an identical phenomena with Carmen Miranda, no music reading or writing, this one coming from real rural background immigration in quite rural portugal into the US, and a huge success connected to her Brazilian exotic look and also exotic clothing paraphernalia... and a great voice too. So... what's so "extraordinary about not needing to know to read or write music to become a great singer? It's not an impediment at all ;)

Her upper register is called the "whistle" range of the soprano voice. It's exceedingly rare. Mariah Carey can sometimes achieve it, though not as well as Yma. @Evan&Within she also can use super head voice too in the 7 TH octave . And yes yma sumac never whistle .her is more a full or mixed voice.
