@@AcidOverseer Oedipus doesn't apply because the original manga that all this is based on doesn't have the incest element - it's a fairly basic revenge story. The SK adaptation basically added that twist to make the film its own thing. And besides, it's not like every story that has surprise incest in it is based off of Oedipus.

@damian martinez I heard a positive review compare Dae-Su to a feral cat and Brolin to a raging Bull. They liked that aspect of it and respected the reinterpretation presenting him as pretty different than what came before. Not saying its right or wrong, but I think that kind of change could have made for a different fight dynamic. Less martial arts and more brute force (but the movie's not too good so I guess we're not getting that haha).

You know something really important about Oldboy? Oh Dae-su is just some fuckin guy. He's complicated, he's a drunk, he neglects his family...he's just another dude in the world. And when he seeks his revenge, he's never cool and stoic. He's always just some guy, plus 1 fresh crazy pill. You never ever ever see what he's doing as cool or inspirational. He's not a morally ambiguous Hollywood action hero, with a deep gravely voice. He's just a person. And that's why he's so potent.

You could probably go back and find nothing that really makes you analyze the film like the original. That whole scene in the remake where his daughter gets the stupid Buddha is the writers and Spike desperately trying to capture that sort of feeling but it instead falls flat on it’s face for having almost no relevancy to the plot since she had never seen it in the first place. I also really like that in the original Oldboy the guy taking revenge makes sure to keep Oh Dae-su alive, keep him healthy, keep him satisfied while on his quest for revenge(Paying the guy off to not attack Oh Dae-su, severing and giving him the hand of the guy he wanted to take to give him what he wants, etc). He's playing by the rules he set, he's being fair. Sure he was a horrible despicable person for doing that to someone in the first place and ruining a guy's life, but at the very least he has a set of principles he follows and sticks to, and is a respectable villain. That's compelling, that's a damn good villain.

On the "rubber ducky" subject, the original Oldboy had the scene where she discovers the angel wings he had gotten her so long ago. They don't mean anything to her, she puts them on and you see it doesn't really hold any value to her (can't remember her name ATM). A quick side note: In the original manga, the protagonist goes captive for ten years. Park added five for a reason. The limitation period on first degree murder was 15 years in Korea back then. Oh was framed for killing his wife, and there is a scene Lee sending Oh a chat message stating his false charge has been lifted (56:34). This period had been extended to 25 years in 2007, and finally gone limitless in 2015. A simple question: Why the hell did Spike Lee extend another five?

Korea is a country with strict gun laws. Korean police don't try to force the gangs down, they try to manage them (because even if they do, another organization will be formed). However, if a gangster uses a gun, the military, not the police, will be dispatched to clear it up, so Korean gangsters cannot use a gun even if they have it.

As someone who just saw the original, it’s so funny seeing how little style there is in literally every aspect of the remake. From the direction, the color choices, the sets, the costumes, the camera work, the music, literally every aspect of the original films style was striped away. It genuinely feels like Spike Lee was forced to make this movie, so he just phoned everything in.

It's crazy right!? The lack of artistic vision in a literal sense is kinda nuts. Just the opening itself is like... what?? He's not captive at the police station, he's not talking to the camera, he doesn't seem to love his daughter at all. He's like... just an asshole. There's so little symbolism in the visuals except the most childish and obvious like the umbrella. And even that could have been really cool if they actually made the effort to make a custom umbrella prop that hides the hash marks until you look more closely but NOPE. Looks like they whipped it up on set that very day.

The thing about Woo Jin is that, as Adam points out, if you forget about the fact that the girl was his sister, you can kinda almost sympathize with him. I mean, yes, that's obviously a pretty big fucking thing to overlook, but the point is that if you took the incest out of the equation you can kinda understand his point of view. Whereas in the American version, you literally can't take the incest out of the equation because it's no longer a story of two people the same age who love each other, it's a story of a grown man fucking his underage children and eventually trying to murder them. The idea that you could ever remotely empathize with this villain, even on a "he's still a psycho but I kinda get why he's upset" level, is just ludicrous.

Woo-jin was a compelling villain because he is basically the protagonist of his own revenge story, from his persepctive Dae-su seems like the one who caused his sister's death and ruined Woo-jin's life, we the audience only think differently because the story is told from the persepctive of Dae-su. Really Woo-jin did nothing to deserve what happened, yea he slept with his sister but it was a mutually consensual relationship where they both loved each other, it's not even comparable to Spike Lee's version.

The sad part about the hammer fight in the remake is that it’s completely divorced of context. In the original the reason it’s a total melee is because guns are very scarce in South Korea so thugs would just have whatever they can find. In America those thugs would absolutely have guns but it’s Oldboy so gotta have a hammer fight I guess. Same with the dumplings. Not only does this movie not give a shit but it’s actively not trying to localize and innovate on the original.

One detail that I really appreciated about the scene where Oh Dae-su tries to force himself through the feeding door of his prison is just how effortless the guard handles it. The way he manages to force Oh Dae-su back into his cell and then close the door/seal the latch using only his feet and without saying a word conveys a lot of information in a really simple an seamless way. For Oh Dae-su his world has been turned completely upside down, but for the guard this is just another day in a job he's seemingly done hundreds if not thousands of times before Oh Dae-su even arrived. It's the first hint we get that these are not amateurs and that while Oh Dae-su is the main focus, he likely isn't the only prisoner, which also teases the fact that his jailers might not be the ones with a vendetta, but rather some sort of weird and twisted business.

Another detail I loved during the original’s ending was how Dae-su seemed to be genuinely smiling at first, but after a while his smile starts to become forced, just like we had seen him smile before. In the Korean version, there was also the massive implication of how strong Lee Woo-Jin’s drive was. You see him and Oh Dae-Su grew up in an impoverished town. Knowing that Woo-Jin was able to work his way up into the riches using his own revenge as motivation is so much more palpable and lends greatly to his character without having to explicitly say anything. In the American version, the villain already comes from a rich family and his stupid ploy for revenge just seems even more petty.

I love how the 2013 version expects us to care for Joe Doucett despite him murdering those football players. In the original, Oh Dae-su was defending himself from street thugs beating him over a cigarette. While we never see the final outcome it's likely he just knocked them out with a few minor injuries. In the remake, the football players thought Joe was a random creeper about to assault this defenseless woman. Granted, punching Joe is not a smart way to start things off, but Joe could've just ran away or knocked them out in *non-leathal* ways, but nope, he straight up breaks their fucking necks in front of their girlfriends. And oh right, he has *WITNESSES* now! Why didn't those girls call the police on him after he murdered their boyfriends!?! Could they not get a good description of him in *BROAD DAYLIGHT!* Oh Dae-Su was socially inept, Joe is a *SOCIOPATH!!!*

Not to mention that Oh Dae-su doesn't kill anyone in the movie: he beats people up and tortures them too, but he's never shown killing anyone, probably the guy he found in the prison (the one sitting there before Mr Park's office), was knocked out as well. It truly shows that, even if his main focus is revenge, he's still a normal person deep down, and would not take it out on those who didn't have a direct role in his imprisonement. Joe just goes around and murders people!

kinda late to comment on this one but when watching the original the penny started to drop right when woo jin said the real question was "why did he let me go after 15 years". it all came together in my head. the theme of incest in the antagonist's motive. the fact mi do was younger, and not only did he recognize her from tv, she recognized him. how dae su had a baby daughter old enough to talk on the phone, she had to be at least 3. 15 years was just enough for his daughter to be of legal age. woo jin really said "incest is fine with me, but i draw the line at pedophilia"

The thing that I find frustrating about this is that as a base concept, _Oldboy_ (the original film of which happens to be my favorite movie) has an interesting hook that could be taken in essentially limitless directions... A man is imprisoned for years and suddenly set free. There's such a great mystery there, and you could build countless stories around that setup. So in theory, I don't have a problem with another _Oldboy_ being made. Just as the South Korean film was pretty different from the original Manga, a remake should be pretty different from the South Korean film. But they just did the worst possible thing with it... a watered-down shot-for-shot remake. If I was the lead producer working on this movie, my goal wouldn't have been "Let's just do a hacky, shitty shot-for-shot remake." My goal would have been "Let's just take the basic set-up... and see just how unique and creative a story we could build off of that setup." I mean, sure, you could throw some nods and references in for fans (maybe a single-shot fight, or similar iconography in key scenes), but make the bulk of it totally unique.

One thing I like is how it doesn’t even mention his daughter past his escape, making his daughter being alive a surprise, but also makes the twist that he had sex with her as well so damn shocking.
