Yoga for seniors with bad knees is a simple chair yoga for seniors with knee pain workout so you will need a sturdy chair. The focus today is not just on the knees. We start off with a gentle warm up and then focus on strengthening the muscles that support the bad knees. We will be working with the whole area from the hips down to the feet to make them stronger in their supporting role. This workout consists of easy to do modified yoga poses to strengthen the quadriceps and hamstrings as well as poses that strengthen the hips and ankles, all important joints and muscles for stabilising the knee joint. When these areas are strong you won't risk straining or injuring the knee joint and you'll be building muscle to support your painful knees, which over time with regular practice should reduce the pain or stiffness.
This is knee friendly yoga, a very gentle and slow practice done entirely on a chair, so the pressure is off the knees. The small movements and holding of positions strengthens muscles. All in all it is great yoga therapy for knee pain relief. Although it is targeted yoga for seniors with bad knees, it is a complete body stretch and is also suitable yoga for seniors with limited mobility not due to knee issues or the elderly.
As you move through the poses, you will either be holding each movement for several breaths or holding for a single longer breath using the abdominal breathing technique. As most movements are combined with breath, this abs and arms yoga workout will also give you the benefits that yogic breath lengthening offers.
Once you are able to practice this routine comfortably, increase the repetitions to challenge yourself further.
