Learn yoga class sequencing using the LADDER flow method. Included are tips for yoga pose transitions and an entire yoga class planning overview. I love empowering new yoga teachers with simple yoga sequencing and class planning methods. You can choose how creative or simple you'd like to make it. Sequencing using a ladder means you choose 4 to 6 poses and build one on top of the other. You keep repeat the sequence adding a pose each time, with a break or re-set flow (i.e. vinyasa) in between. In this example, I am basing my class with these 5 poses: Crescent Lunge, Warrior III, Warrior II, Side Angle, and Bird of Paradise.

I'm always afraid that my students will get bored if I stick to the same base poses in the sequence even if it's intelligent sequencing, like your ladder flow system... but I guess you're right that even if you vary it up a little in between, the experience of being guided through it actually feels quite different than when you're teaching it. Thanks Ashley!

How long breath count do we need for each precious pose and the add-on new pose? 5 breath count for both or 3 for old and 5 for new pose? I feel both ways work ok for me. I like how you broke this down. I am going to apply this to one of my sequences that I felt was missing something. I noticed in this ladder flow, there could be 10 or more vinyasa's in the Sun Salutations and in between asana's. Since I tend to begin fatigue around taking the 3rd Vinyasa, this makes me wonder how many vinyasa's are too many. When it comes to taking vinyasa, do you have a max amount when sequencing?
@AshleyHagen

You can skip the vinyasa in between. No problem. It depends on your class, students and you. I practiced Ashtanga for years. So. Many. Vinyasas.

Dear Ashley, your videos always pop out when I need them the most (= when I am very discouraged and frustrated ready to give up). Thank you very much for doing this for us. I've found the video very very helpful. Just would like to ask, in a class, do we have to always teach pose#1 followed 1 vinyasa flow and then pose #1&#2 + vinyasa flow etc. (You continue to add the 5-6 poses) or could you also offer the 5 poses all together + vinyasa and you just repeat the whole 'pack' 2 or 3 times. Or perhaps just start like 2 poses together + vinyasa and then you add 2 or 3 more poses (to make the 5) as the class progresses? Instead of adding 1 , then 1+ 2, 1+2+3 etc.
@AshleyHagen
@AshleyHagen Жыл бұрын
I’m happy to help! To answer your question, when it comes to teaching a yoga class, there is no “do always” rules. Unless you are teaching a strict set sequence, you have the freedom to make it what you want. You can try it a variety of ways.

Hi Ashley! What type of class would you tell your students this ladder flow is? I have a hard time talking in introduction so how would I explain this ladder flow in the beginning? For ex: "Today we're focusing on blah blah blah" if that makes sense. Lol 😅
@AshleyHagen
@AshleyHagen Жыл бұрын
It depends on the poses I choose for the sequence. It might be something like "we are working up towards (post)." Or I wouldn't say there is a pose focus at all, and instead it's a theme or muscle group. It's usually done in a vinyasa class. I don't think you need to necessarily explain it to students. The teacher I went to that taught this style just simply taught. Not explanation of how it works and didn't call it anything except "yoga."

THe point you make at 2:30 is opposite of Tai Chi as they aim to rotate the hips a lot in that practice. Any comment on that? though they have both feet on the ground as they transition. Am trying to see if the point you made is really of value (injury prevention).
@AshleyHagen
@AshleyHagen 3 жыл бұрын
This is not a tai chi practice. When flowing through the poses at a faster pace frequently, it can be a lot to constantly have to readjust. It makes it just not feel awkward and unstable. If you want to go back and forth, that’s up to you. You’ll also have to readjust the feet every time, too. If a pose is just one inhale long, it can simply be frustrating since the transitions involve so much more re-set. *Not medical advice.

Have you attended a yoga teacher training? This should be discussed in depth in training. Giving permission to modify or opt-out and also providing variations for poses that you know someone might struggle with. Make sure you have everyone read and sign a waiver. Mention contraindications and "what tends to happen" and how to fix it. That's some of the basics.
