Great video as always! Definitely going to lead me down a rabbit hole! I will note that in your example at 4:40 the "Tha Ri Ki Ta Thom" is missing the "Ki" and is actual a triplet then 1/16 "Tha Ri Ta Thom", at least is how your saying it. Only noticed because I slowed the video down to 50% to play along because those 32nds are almost too fast to play let alone say! The drum and bass version is dead on though and super rad!

Great one ! 😮 I have a question about konnakol : in a konnakol "beat", the choice of the syllabes is free or there are some rules to follow ? I don't know if I'm clear 🤔...I mean, it seems when I ear about konnakol that everything is regulated, but the choice of the syllabes of a pattern seems to be more like an artistic choice of the composer, am I right ?
@blackfowl75
@blackfowl75 2 жыл бұрын
There definitely are some rules. Konnakol uses whatever rhythmic unit you want but you have to stick to it until you hit the ta again. Most of the time. Also, the syllables do have an order. 1 unit is ta, 2 units is ta ka, 3 ta ki te, ta ka ti mi, ta ki te da thom, etc. Not sure how to build 6, 7 and more but I know they’re just combinations of those… sentences? I suggest doing your own research and/or watching Mattias’ videos on the subject to know more about it.
@YogevGabay
@YogevGabay 2 жыл бұрын
I'ts a pretty interesting subject and I won't pursue myself as if I'm an export. I learn a lot of these by ear, and after a while you seem to kinda "get" the aesthetics of it, if that makes sense?
@studiostelemaque9171
@studiostelemaque9171 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks guys :-) Yogev, I suggest you check the work of Sean Reinert (I don't know if you heard of him). Nothing to deal with konnakol 😅, but he was an amazing drummer who passed away unexpectingly recently. In the album Focus of the band Cynic, there are some cool rythmical surprises that sounds very musical to my poor guitarist's ears ! I'm not sure we deal with polyrythm, but more like rythmical tricks. Tracks like Sentiment, I'm but a Wave to, the last part of How Could I, or Textures, etc. At that time this band was considered like an ufo in the metal scene (1993 I think), but I think it is a great influence for many 2000s bands. You Can also check the Traced In Air album, it is more recent, it sounds more actual, but it is more "standard" rythmically (even if there are impressive drum fills 😍).
