It's a poorly kept secret that Gabriella Robin is Yoko Kanno's pseudonym/alter ego. She used it whenever she sang on a project for over a decade.

Dude the hell??? I‘ve started listening to jazz due to the cowboy bebop a few saxophones, basses and years later I discovered rudy van gelder recordings. Now you are telling me Van Gelder recorded the Seatbelts?? This absolutely blew my mind and goes to show how important and impactful every single cog in music production can be from composing, to the musicians themselves to the instruments and naturally the engineers/producers.

Been a fan of bebop for 20 years and never knew he worked on it. Makes complete sense though how they were able to capture that unique authentic American jazz sound. That man was a legend . That’s a real heavy hitter to have on an anime ost lol

Yoko Kanno + Shinichiro Watanabe = Genius bomb ;) Also there is a little ommision to the Dreamcast game Napple Tale which also has Yoko Kanno and Maaya Sakamoto contribution. And I think Maaya Sakamoto and Yoko Kanno collaborations started way back since they did The Legend of Escaflowne.

I'm literally often avoiding listening to Gravity if it comes up on shuffle... I'd ugly cry so bad... It's a masterpiece of simplicity itself. It's just as long as it needs to be, it doesn't repeat basic patterns... it grabs you, tells it's story and fades away. I'll never be able to create something like that... but i will try till breath leaves me.

My first exposure to her was Vision of Escaflowne. Around episode 2 I realized the music was elevating the show beyond what it probably deserved. When I watched Cowboy Bebop that same year and learned it was the same composer, I was stunned. Unbelievably talented!

One thing that can't be stressed enough is her talent for musical arrangement. All the jazz, rock, pop, ethnic music of all styles was arranged by her and also all the symphonic music was orchestred by her as well. There is no music style created that she can't compose and arrange/orchestrate. It is truly magnificent. Sometimes is truly hard to believe that all the composition and arrangement is actually done by just one person. And she also writes lyrics and sings as Gabriela Robin. There is nothing she can't do.

Yoko Kanno is probably one of the biggest reasons I got into making music myself, and I never even knew it. Her work on Ghost in the Shell was my first experience with electronic music, I believe, and it made a very strong and lasting impression. Not only have most of the anime she's worked on (Cowboy bebop, GiTS SAC, Terror in Resonance) been some of my favorites of all time, but they've made a very strong and lasting impression with their soundtracks. She's just incredible, and I'm very thankful to have experienced the stuff she has worked on. Truly an underappreciated genius.

Thanks for doing this! When Macross Plus first came out here, I was mesmerized by her genius. Escaflowne completely blew me away all over again. And her collaborations with Maaya Sakamoto, Steve Conte, Mai Yamane, etc, introduced me to a host of other wonderful musicians. As far as I'm concerned, Kanno's orchestral work is second to none (including Williams, Zimmer, etc), and she crosses genre like nobody's business.

Amazing! I've been waiting for someone to articulate the great story of Yoko Kanno justly. This is the closest I've seen hitting many key aspects of this great composer. To me, What always stood out for me is how she's unapologetic in utilizing the human voice in a language understood and sometimes made up. All in the pursuit of channeling a feeling that was felt by the listeners, as intended. The strongest point that got me to explore her music more was the unparalleled amount of fusion, and perhaps parody (?) for the lack of a better word. She would use any genre and any influence blatantly if it serves her goal. Which made experiencing her compositions such a luxury that knows no boredom.

Just getting to know this immensely talented and prolific musical maestro. Yoko is an inspiration and I am glad about how her quite strict initial background in Classical music gave her the tools to fully explore and break down all the musical styles she was eventually exposed to in her musical journey. Her quite unique ability to blend styles and genres is just amazing. It's basically an expression of her own personality - calm and composed outside, but in continual creative and philosophical flux inside. I wish her a long life and many more awesome compositions to share with the world.

This is absolutely wonderful. You did such a great job and paid such a respect to Yoko Kanno and her work, you made me cry. The only thing I want to add is that when you mention Bebop as a genre, you have to mention Charlie Parker, John Birks (Dizzy) Gillespie, and Charlie Christian. Thelonious Monk is definitely part of the beginning of the movement in the early 40s. Miles Davis actually left Juilliard School in New-York to go and find Charlier Parker in a club to play with him, he's therefore part of the movement also, but his mentor was Bird (Charlie Parker). John Coltrane definitely played Bebop music, but he's not as much of a pioneer of the movement as Charlie, Dizzy, Thelonious Monk, and Charlie Christian. Coltrane would be more associated with the Free jazz movement of the 60s, with the likes of Pharoah Sanders and Ornette Coleman. Anyways, like your video, I could go on and on about jazz for hours. Thank you so much for this video, your narration, the images, and the music from Yoko Kanno that you used, are all in synchronicity with what she is as an artist, a human being.

It’s difficult to squeeze any more into this video, but one of my favorite works by her is “Rhapsody” from Mind Game (2004). She just absolutely demolishes a variation on Liszt’s “Hungarian Rhapsody”, pretty much proving no genre is off limits, no piece too impossible for Kanno.

This is an excellent video that deserves many more views than most popular videos covering music in the anime industry that often misinform viewers for sheer lack of musical competence. There are no other artists quite like Yoko Kanno. At 11:50, a lot of the time when you hear from the composer that the character of the story is taken as the inspiration for the soundtracks, it's bs because the music sounds like generic synth pop but in all of her work it's very apparent that it's true. It's most apparent in her Macross work and Ghost in the Shell, you can easily tell who the point of view is in each sound track.
