You need to put the intonations on the words. That way people can differentiate. Just writing the words without intonation have no meanings unless the person is reading in context.

There's another one: ìdí (bum/reason) can also be confused with idì (eagle). Great work on this series!

Does yoruba have the noun classes like swahili and does the word for the demonstrative "this" or " that" change depending on the noun

Unfortunately I don't have any knowledge of the Swahili language so I'm not able to maake an accurate comparison.

There are so many homophones in Yoruba language but to mention a few. I will start with Ọwọ which means hand, respect and it is also a city in Ọṣun state. Another is Igba which is garden egg, time, calabash, 200. Another is Ẹgba which is my yoruba tribal ancestry in Ogun State, cane, take (informal). Another is Ogun which can mean medicine, war, deity of war, my yoruba state, property, sweat, and 20. Another is Ake which can mean ax and it is a community in Ogun State. Ọla means wealth, privilege and tomorrow. So with this said, the only way you can know the word being used when it is a case of homophones, you look at the sentence by reading it or if you are excellent with tones, use the tone. Blessing, I am neutrally agreeing with you with the numbers E and Ẹ are different because they are different letters. Since you used the ẹsan which are revenge and nine. Ẹkọ also means pap. Ẹni is also mat. Itan can be story/history or even hip. Ọkan can be one or heart. Ilẹ can be trash or land.Ọkọ can be car, cutlass or husband. Oko can be manhood, farm or stone. Aṣa can be eagle or tradition. Idi can be reason or butt. Ere can mean gain, play or film/movie. Egun can mean bone, masquerade, a tribe in Nigeria and curse word(s). Ẹjọ can mean talk, case, 8, and please (informal). Ana can be in law and yesterday. Ede can means crayfish and language/accent. But for language and accent, we use sọ for language and ran for accent. There are 9 yoruba accents and they are ẹgba, ijẹbu, ikalẹ, ilajẹ, ibadan, ọyọ, ijẹṣa, awori and ọyọ. Ala is another homophone which means dream And line. Ma fala si means don’t put a line on it. Owu is also an homophone meaning jealousy and thread. Owu is also a community in Ogun state. Ẹṣẹ is another homophone which means sin and punch. Ila is line, scar, also a city called ila ọrọgun and okra. ọrọ is wealth and word. Egun can mean a tribe in Nigeria originating from Lagos, curse on someone or bone. Ọdẹ is another homophone which can be hunter and fool.

Greg Jordan that one is ọwọ which can also mean respect. Ọwọ is also a city in Ọṣun state, I believe.

Wow, that is nice. My Yoruba grandparents are all from Ogun State. Even my maternal grandmother’s family is one of the prominent families in Ogun State.
