► Yosemite National Park: UNEXPLAINED Disappearances
► In the vast expanse of Yosemite National Park, a series of unexplained disappearances cast a shadow over its breathtaking vistas. While many come and enjoy it’s towering granite cliffs and expansive forests, this is not the case for all. Most disappearances in this park are swiftly resolved with a positive outcome. Some, though evade closure, leaving behind nothing but a trail of confusing and unanswered questions. Among these, certain disappearances stand out, baffling seasoned searchers and experienced law enforcement officials...

Hey all! I hope that you're having a nice build up to Christmas. I've been a bit busy so it's taken forever to get this finished. The next video will likely be an hour long compilation as there's no way I have enough time to finish a new video now. That being said, I'm hoping to change things up a bit next year and visit other topics more often. Disappearances will obviously remain the staple of the channel and the bulk of the content. With that being said, my fiance is coming on board to write and edit with me next year, meaning that I can start producing more, and longer videos. Very excited for next year! Merry Christmas!

Being raised traditional Navajo, we as kiddos are told stories during the winter time about places and areas where there were legendary battles of monsters and the warriors twins of old, many of these areas are where dead or downed monsters lay, so powerful they are, their influence will still mark the earth.

A couple of things, you should remember. Granite has some interesting electrical properties, and in a wooded valley, GPS signals from the satellites can be very difficult to acquire. When you combine those two things, and bad weather, your electronic items, like cell phones and GPS receivers, rarely work. Be safe out here. Thanks Adam, outstanding video. Mele Kalikimaka.

I worked in the park for 2 years in the mid '80's. Can't remember the exact year ('86/'87?) but a young couple stopped to take a break on Glacier Point Road. They parked in a pull out and walked a short ways into the woods. The guy found a rock to sit on and his girlfriend walked in a bit further. A short while later he went looking for his girlfriend and couldn't find her so he contacted the rangers and a search ensued. They searched for days but didn't find any trace of her. It left us staff wondering what the heck happened. Actually, Yosemite is a hot spot for missing persons and many without a trace. I feel lucky as I was a solo, off trail hiker, well versed in orienteering and explored much wilderness alone, but never ran into any problems.

In the late 60's, 70's and 80's, my younger brothers and I did a lot of hiking in Yosemite, and, occasionaly our wives....never bothered getting a permit....just went. In 1980, late spring snows delayed the opening of the eastern road in...Tioga Pass. We hiked the trail to Tenaya Lake and for two days, never saw another soul until we neared Half Dome, did the climb up, then hiked on down to the main valley floor. Now, I read about all these many missing people in national parks, first highlighted by David Paulides, with Yosemite being the largest cluster and it gives me the creeps. Not trace found of these people ever found except an occasional shoe.....WHAT happens to ALL of these people?

First story: it's ODD they didn't find his scent after a profuse amount of rain fell and it had been days? Not really! Dog teams are often misused by departments as they are deployed too late. Dogs are most effective, hence the 70% stat, when they are deployed Immediately on realization that a person is missing. They HAVE to be on scene within the first crucial hours of a disappearance if you want to pick up a scent. And even then, they can be confused. If y'all want to see how they work and what issues can arise you can watch things like north woods law. There's a good episode with a missing man that when they tried to track him with the dog the dog mistakenly followed the scent of the police officer who had been there before instead. This is why it's important to deploy a dog team BEFORE a full blown search and rescue response is mobilized. They need the scene as free from contaminants, and as dry as physically possible. Also I suggest shows like that for a more rounded view, but I will note that I have practical experience and knowledge of rescue situations. My suggestion is just for those who don't to learn things. It is often lack of knowledge that makes these cases seem more mysterious than they really are. And usually a prolonged disappearance is more to do with a fumbled response by departments than it is anything supernatural or scary. Once you educate yourself and stop looking through things with a spooky lens you will realize how infuriatingly these cases were truly handled. Anyways, stay safe out there y'all.

Thanks for the info about the dog searches! I've often wondered how useful they were in certain circumstances. I've heard before that it was easier for them to pick up a scent after the rain and that always sounded so counter initiative.
@cauldhound

@@smm855 I cant imagine what logic that must be! I imagine maybe its a distorted version of if someone goes missing just after some rain that can be helpful, as their scent will be fresh and old scents will be washed away before they were there. So perhaps that's where that came from? Otherwise baffling haha

You should always walk back in the same trail that you arrived in if you aren't sure were you're going there's no point in continuing to walk in a direction that you aren't familiar with because you will only become even more lost which is why so many people likely never manage to find their way out and its already too late by that point

Makes sense, problem is that if you're unfamiliar with the area, trails look very different from one direction to another. And if the hiker manages to get off trail, or an area that they can't climb back out from, things start to go badly very fast (this happened a lot in the north shore of Vancouver, Google was sending people to a nonexistent trail, which took them down a very steep incline which they couldn't ascend to get back from.)

Park rangers do not like to talk about cases like these and they claim they don't keep track of these disappearances. This is really strange because they would have to pay some searchers, air support, etc. How do they keep track of this without keeping track of who they are looking for? When their books are audited, how do they prove their expenses without keeping track of who they were spending their resources on?

Being an experienced hiker does not seem to have anything to do with whether or not you get lost and disappear in the wilderness. I feel that both of these men had every intention to go to Half Dome changed their minds and went in another direction on a spontaneous impulse. If they were not found on the route to Half Dome, after multiple massive searches with dogs, then it is probable that they were never there. People change their minds all the time. Weather change may have prompted them to try a short cut, too.

The last case, the guy named Walter, it’s rather apparent that he got picked up by a total stranger in a vehicle on the road, as that’s where his scent trail stopped & could not be regained by Top Dog Sniffing Units. Like suggested by the narrator, Walter either was bundled off bcoz he saw something he should not have seen, or he was abducted by a shady person or people. Again, it adds further weight to not going hiking in the US alone.

I suppose they either were elsewhere when the area was searched previously and ended up dying and succumbing to the elements later when their body was found or someone dumped their body there those are the most likely scenarios imo

It’s weird that the park & Governor denied access to the one family. What type of substance can cover up the scent of a person. Is there a serial killer in law enforcement or the state park rangers. There’s many communities police, courts, judges, & so on who will cover up the crimes of certain people. I think it’s also odd. They never figured out the one person they did find cause of death & everyone of authority & state park officials , & even the governor and his family should be investigated. Did the incidents that did happen, all happen over a span of time that could be one person’s lifetime?

Maybe the base of the cliff wasnt where Orvar began his ascent. Maybe thats the point in which he was abducted. That would explain there being no trace of him in the area indicating he was no longer in the area and why dogs werent able to pick up his scent had he left the area, who knows? Theres just something odd about Yosemite. It has the largest cluster of missing people of any other park when it comes to the Missing 411 phenomenon.

My sister's boyfriend was driving a four wheeler next to me and my sis who were also on one, the tire hit a ditch and her swerved and crashed. The uneven rocky paths and no cell service are no joke, it took a while for the ambulance to arrive. He's in the hospital right now, docs are thinking about a concussion and broken wrist.

Isn't Curry Village where Jody Arias disappeare from? I also think that Yosemite Park Employees shut down Dave Paulides from getting any of the information under the freedom of information act. There is something sneaky and bizarre about Yosemite.

A dog trainer explained why there is no scent from people lost in national parks. Most people are wearing thick soled hiking boots 1 inch thick soles of hard rubber. That means no scent is left from the hiker for the dog to pick up especially on rock.

I wonder if it is at all possible, to get information from cellphone users that are driving by some of these areas where search dogs lose the scent at a highway. They can track a persons whereabouts during a murder trial why can't they here... Except they would have to get that information from cell towers and/or providers and go from there. They will have that window of time from when they were last seen to the point the search dogs lose the scent. Its probably to much work for the police to pursue that avenue, its easier for them to say the person just ran off somewhere. Pretty much aiding the possible kidnapper/killer.

You know what would be smart is, if they trained these dogs to bark the number of times that they pick up multiple cents on a missing person's trail. So that way they know if there's a third party involved

I don't see how the NPS could deny the family information regarding their sons disappearance. If they could afford a private investigation then they can afford a lawyer to sue the NPS to get the information.
