Developer Good-Feel extends its yarn-themed games with a new Yoshi release - a first-party Nintendo title based on Unreal Engine 4! Is the Epic middleware a good fit for a Nintendo game? Can the tech deliver the signature locked 60fps seen in the majority of Switch first-party games? A demo is available now - we've played that and seen some more levels.

Pushing 60 instead of a hard resolution? Thank you. Maybe more developers should follow suit. Nintendo has always pushed for 60fps in most titles because it makes gameplay feel the best. A platformer should never be 30. It just wouldn't feel right.

Yoshi's Woolly World had a pretty good soundtrack, with "Bowser's Castle Halls" being a major stand out. Not surprising, as the game was co-composed by Tomoya Tomita, who worked on the underrated Wario Land: Shake it/The Shake Dimension. Yoshi's Story & Yoshi Island DS, while not as good as the original, do have some catchy tunes. Yoshi's New Island is pretty bad, but there are some hidden gems in the soundtrack, like the special level theme.

@Walther Penne "Dude. that thing can be done with 100 people and 1 year...Since remember: This game is a simple 2.5D/3D-sidescroller-game." Less than that even. Many UE4 games are developed with only 20-30 people in a 1-2 year time frame. And most of Nintendo's own games only have around 30 people on the team. So if Nintendo wants, they could put out cheap UE4 projects with just 20 people each year if they want. It all depends on the scale of the game as well, since obviously a AAA game running UE4 will need way more resources.

If Nintendo made another standard home console, it wouldn’t do nearly as well as the Switch is doing now, jut because it’s a portable system and Nintendo’s portables have always outsold their home consoles.

6:34 The drop to 30 FPS mode is analogous to how games used to switch from 240p to 480i for crisper menus, or you could compare that to how a codec works where motion obscures resolution drops while stillness has to be more crisp.

@shtiken
@shtiken 5 жыл бұрын
I think the game is done, so I wouldn't expect the resolution to change. It does look nice in motion though thanks to 60fps, and it doesn't actually look blurry thanks to the art style. Personally, I'm satisfied enough with it, mainly because it's 60fps. The lower than expected resolution is because they're using UE4. I think the rationale behind using UE4 is to have it be a first party demonstration to other devs, and they picked a smaller game to do it with. You won't see them use UE4 for bigger, more important games.

@@miggysaito8073 Yeah, I mean what's the point of having higher resolution in a side scroller if as soon as you move it's juddery, on top of the controls feeling heavy and the game overall feeling less good to play. 60fps will feel as good as 60fps does forever, but a slighly higher resolution will become even less relevant as time goes on, and all you're left with is a juddry 30fps and heavy controls. I just hope Link's Awakening is also 60fps, and since it's not using UE4, it'll probably be higher resolution than this. I'm a bit concerned that it'll be 30fps, because the reveal was 30fps even though the stream feed was 60.

That is some awfully low resolution holy heck. Now, by bias is gonna show heavily... but while playing the demo, none of this bothered me. The game, while clearly blurry, really looked passable. And I cant comprihend why. Yes I can pick out geometry edges with my naked eye, yet its never distracting. Compared to like Rocket League on switch, where when it drops rez, it drops hard. Or Warframe's Plains or Fortuna. Sure there were updates to improve those, but it looks like the games consist of blurry pixels, while yoshi just looks smooth and clean. I feel like the game could really use TAA that could resolve to like 800p
@DespyCL
@DespyCL 5 жыл бұрын
The problem with this is, that the game isnt even graphically intensive... it does also have ue4 features turned off, and yet it still runs at extremely low resolutions, in a modern day developed game... Sure, i played the demo and liked it, plays very colsely to an old yoshi's island game, but i really cant believe there are people that are okay with this kind of delivered product... What happened there? Even yoshi's woolly world looked better...

Not even 720p in docked mode? Who thought UE4 in Switch was a good idea?? No "global illumination" justifies such a poor resolution... I'm so focused on the pixels showing on every edge that I can't get that "real world objects" feeling you talk about... The Nintendo in house engine was capable enough to handle this game... And they wouldn't be struggling this much with resolution to maintain frame-rates. Digital Foundry analyzers tend to over-value frame-rate over resolution. And don't get me wrong, frame-rate is the most important parameter. But you can't say that the performance is shaping up to be "perfect" with a output resolution of 576p. No man, you can call it smooth, you can call it competent. But not perfect. Perfect would be a 1080p game at 60fps with nice visuals. Any other thing is a compromise... And in my opinion this game compromises a lot. As many do with the lacking Switch...

What I do not get is why Good Feel went for UE4, I was surprised they didnt modify the Wolly world engine which most Nintendo developers did to get an engine quickly running on Switch then add specific technology which take advantage of the hardware. Had the Wolly World engine had been used I could see this been at 900p granted not as graphically pronounced unless the scaling tech is to notch at Good Feel.
