Bob Dylan wrote this in 1967 and his version was released in 1971 on the Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II album. Another version, which had been recorded with the Band in 1967) was later included on the Basement Tapes album in 1975. The lyrics differ between the 2 versions.
The Byrds released the first recording of the song in 1968. Joan Baez covered it in the same year. Making it a song that was covered prior to the artist releasing the 'original' recording.
Lyrics:
Clouds so swift, the rain falling in
Gonna see a movie called "Gunga Din"
Pack up your money, pull up your tent, McGuinn
You ain't a-going nowhere!
Chorus
Ooh-ee, ride me high,
Tomorrow's the day that my bride's a-gonna come!
Ooh-ee, are we gonna fly
Down into the easy chair!
Genghis Khan and his brother, Don
Could not keep on keeping on
We'll climb that bridge after it's gone
After we're wade past it
Chorus
Buy me some rings and a gun that sings
Aflute that toots and a bee that stings
A sky that cries and a bird that flies
A fish that walks and a dog that talks
Chorus 2x
