I always look at what others are doing, but at this point, I'm pretty confident in what is actually feasible in our home. We keep it super simple because with a 6, 4, and 2 year old, all the extras can get overwhelming really quickly.

I am relieved that my doubts, worries, and feelings are not mine alone. Others on this road of homeschooling have or have had the same concerns. Feeling like I am not doing enough, trying to get to EVERY subject every day along with swimming and piano. Why can't I do this for ONE child? This other KZfaq mom has 3 kids and gets through all their subjects in 20 minutes. It has been on my mind all week to send him to public school. I know in my heart we have made the right decision. Protecting his innocence, his self-esteem, and his confidence. I can compensate for a book or a lesson but once that "innocence" is gone I can not help him make that up I can not help him replace that.

We are ending year 6, and I still don’t feel “seasoned”. Friends say I’m doing great, but I sometimes still secretly feel like I’m faking it and just making it look good. 😅😂 I’m still trying to solidify and stick to a routine, pushing for more independence and more middle grade amounts of work with my 10 and 12 yr olds. I think I’m the biggest problem. 😬 Too relaxed.

This is such a blessing & encouragement!! Beautifully worded reminder to us!! Our homeschool journey has been a process of going through everything you just described!!! I still struggle with doubts about if I'm doing enough- are they going to be equipped for college & life?! I was so excited to begin homeschool- I imagined all the fun ways we could learn things instead of just sitting with books... Yeah, none of my fun, joy-filled learning plans have come to fruition!!! I've spent more hours of headache & frustrating moments than not! My youngest in particular has had no interest or desire to learn anything from the get-go! I've had to "shove" every ounce of learning into his stubborn, strong-willed mind!! It's been the most challenging thing I've ever done in my life!! He's made good progress,but he just hates it all. It's been a battle every day, and his attitude is so frustrating. We've gone over and have posted on our wall the Bible verses about doing all to the glory of God, but it is still a daily battle. We have experimented with many, many different curricula, as far as my budget would allow, but I'm to the point of thinking it really doesn't matter what I use, he's going to fight me on it because he just doesn't want to do it. If I did that "unschooling" thing & let him lead, he'd never have learned to read or multiply!!! He's 12 now. Do you know of any good science curricula for middle schoolers that would include projects & learning for more mechanically minded kids? That is the one thing I might be able to interest him in, but I have only come across the usual life science, astronomy, oceans, plants, & geology... ty so much!! ~Liz

It is so overwhelming. And just gets more so as you get older. I counted up my oldest son's readings a couple years ago and he had OVER FIFTY reading assignments a week. Plus Latin. Plus keeping a nature and science journal. Plus astronomy project. Plus written narrations. Plus Latin and CM wanted two other foreign languages?! And dancing, folksongs, art, handwork, pe... It's too much.

Thank you for your honesty. I was guilty of looking at those perfect instagram homeschoolers and tried to recreate and when it didn't go the way I thought it 'should' have, I felt like a complete failure. The best thing I ever did was throw my hands up and be done with all of it. I gave myself the time to relax and let my kids go. They got bored, they played and then suddenly they dove in to what THEY were interested in. I just helped with the resources they needed and looked for the little ways that I could gently guide and implement maths, geography etc and they began to thrive! They are engaged, enthusiastic and want to learn. It's having that faith that God has our backs, we just have to trust. I wish I had of let go a long time ago 😆

@emmyjean5068
@emmyjean5068 2 ай бұрын
@@malloryanthony8921 they are 10,8 and 5. Lol they did play Lego all day for some time there but then they wanted more Lego, so they started to look at eBay etc, counting their money, how much more they needed to purchase, looked at ways to make money, selling toys on marketplace, potting plants and selling them, saving pocket money etc. They made the money and came to the bank to put into my account and followed along with the ordering process. We noted all the totaling of money etc for evidence of learning. Funny thing is as soon as they received the Lego, played for a couple of days they were over it😅. They then began to play dress ups which then lead to writing plays and then turning them into short movies. I help them write scripts and they copy it out. They were not interested in doing workbooks prior so this was an achievement and evidence of progress , they now have the confidence to have a go at workbooks as they want to write the plays themselves, they want to learn. So much more but I hope this helps🙏

I have never watched you before but you’ve been a good perspective for me. My oldest will be starting school this fall. I was the oldest in my family and we were all homeschooled K-12 so I have plenty of knowledge to get started with homeschooling. It is such a struggle for me to know what curriculum to choose what style of teaching/learning to use or what co-ops/sports/activities to be a part of. On top of that I have several friends that are starting their kiddos homeschooling too so we’re constantly comparing notes/ideas. You’re helping me realize that if I don’t want to do something that everyone else is doing or even if something sounds great but doesn’t fit our current lives then its ok to skip it. Thanks!

The thought of homeschooling scares me! I feel I'm not educated enough or creative enough. My son (1st) grade has been struggling socially, coming home talking about things that don't align with our beliefs, he's had trouble focusing, and getting alone with others. He has had to defend himself physically many times this year from other boys. During the summer my son is a such a different kid. I see the real him. Hes not overhwlemed with stress i know comes from social pressure and being at school for 8 hours a day. He always seems so anxious, nervous, and closed off during the school year. His teacher says he tests above grade level, he is a brilliant boy. It has been on my heart to homeschool ever since he started kinder and it never goes away. I just let my own self doubt keep me from acting on it. Im also in an enequally yoked marriage so it is hard for us to agree on decisions such as homeschool and public school. You always have so much wisdom and grace when you speak. I appreciate you !

One thing I think about when I don't feel educated enough is.... I went through the public school system and feel that way. Why would I send my kids through the same system that I feel didn't educate me well? So much of education can be done independently by them reading books from brilliant minds of the past. We don't have to be the ones to teach them everything. That is freeing to me. I already see how my oldest is learning so much that he is going to be smarter than me, HA! But I get to learn along side of my kids and it's amazing. I hope you and your husband are able to unite and find what works for your family. One thing I would recommend if you are considering homeschooling is listening to Dr. Robinson who came up with the Robinson curriculum. I don't follow it exactly because I love Charlotte Mason and implementing her philosophy. However, listening to his lectures gave me such FREEDOM in what is possible with letting kids have independence in their own education. I think it resonates with men as well so maybe your husband would appreciate it. There's a Facebook group too and dads contribute there as well. You can find his lectures by searching on KZfaq for "Dr Robinson explains the curriculum" (just thought I would share since your husband might like listening to another man speaking about homeschooling). Blessings to you!

Look into Classical Conversations. It sounds like a good fit for you. You homeschool at "school" with him learning from the tutors how to teach the info that they learn in class and gives enough socializing one day a week to keep an only child from feeling lonely. Having other moms to encourage and help is such a blessing! Even if you decide to do it on your own, go for it! You are the best teacher he has!

You can at least try for a year. I'm sure your husband would be more open to a trial period vs having to convince him to allow you to homeschool indefinitely. Sometimes just giving a child one year is enough to reignite them and give them a much needed emotional & physical break from bullying. Also there are many other options, look into charter schools in your area. I had a friend who signed her boys up for a 3x a week public school, the rest was home learning. My sister does a charter school were they have 1 day a week of PE, art, tutoring--- the rest of the week is at home with checking in with a teacher 2x a week. There is also fully online schools both private & public, as well as homeschool coops. Do a little research, share what you learn with your husband. Best of luck to you. ✌

I totally feel your pain! Been there too! At age 6, that’s definitely enough. After teaching 4 kids to read (one with dyslexia), my biggest tip is to not push it before they’re ready. When they are, everything will click and make sense, and you won’t have to force it! I have had one that read at 4 and one that read at 7, and everything in between. Definitely keep working on the letter sounds and blends and just read books to her. You can point to the words as you read so she starts to recognize what they look like when you say them. I have loved Explode the Code for phonics in the early ages! Best wishes! ❤️

Yes, my oldest caught on to reading quickly and naturally in “kindergarten” at age 5. I was expecting the same for my middle child, but we had some days like these where we both ended up yelling or crying. After a month or so, I set it aside for the rest of the year. He just wasn’t ready. In the meantime, we did read alouds and got lots of comics and monster books from the library bc that’s what he was interested in. We did Explode the Code for first grade, and he started reading at age 7. He’s 8 now and caught up to 2nd grade level in one year. Garfield and the Smurfs are still his favorites😂 Don’t be afraid to let them read whatever will catch their interest to motivate them, and it’ll click when they’re ready.
