i'm in my first year and I am 25. There are so many ages of people in university! For anyone out there, you're not too old and it's NEVER too late. Go get that degree!!!!

I understand it perfectly. I hate it when people talk about "wasted years". I didn't go to university straight after school because my life was a bit messy at that moment, but I did other things. I got my advanced english certificate and my driving license that year. I went to uni to study film eventually (again, more people telling me it was a waste of a degree), and now I moved to London to work as an au pair and more people telling me I'm wasting my year. It obviously isn't my dream job and I can't wait to find a job that I like, but things take time and I do it at my own pace! Thankfully my parents have always been on my side.

Right on, Jen! After a series of tragedies, and panic attacks, I finished college at 42 and entered a prestigious graduate program and graduated 1st in my cohort. As one professor, a genius MacArthur Grant recipient, told me that geniuses (not that she really believed in geniuses per se) tend to be non-consensus thinkers, and that she hadn't gotten a driver license until she was 54 years old. Genius fast thinking, but, though intelligent, it is different thinking. Geniuses, though neither stupid or especially crazy, miss many milestones that others hit. As you said, we're all different, and no one will give us an award for living someone else idea of what we are.

Just wanna say you are AMAZING! And if you were my daughter [mine is a bit younger than you are] I would be absolutely proud to be your Mum. You are living your life, working out what you want to do, independent with a job, managing your own finances, and living in your own home in a foreign country. Wow. I have many close friends whose children are now 26. They've been home for about 3 years now, having graduated from uni with degrees in subjects varying from history, art history and English Lit. But none of them have jobs. None of them can afford to live on their own or in a flat share in London. In many respects uni has not equipped them for life at all as I have witnessed how these 26-somethings, living back with Mum and Dad, have regressed almost to teens. They seem to possess a distinct lack of maturity and a sense of entitlement. I don't think the modern uni can offer much other than academia. It's not these young graduates' fault: it's the way the British system / society works. Now you, Jen, on the other hand, you have attained far more life skills than any of these graduates. This will stand you in good stead for any new venture you plan in the future, whether it's a job, a relationship, or motherhood. You've got a great head on your shoulders and a really open and self-effacing heart. That, combined with experience (that only comes from living alone) life skills and common sense, will transport you to any place you want to in your life. Leap into your imagination and enjoy!

Totally agree - Uni's should be trying better to give students life skills. Maybe just an extra course? When I was in uni they tried to help with a mini course on cash flow and accounts and I was allowed to take an extra module in Personal Development (I did Electronics) and found those extra modules super useful, probably more relevant than the now redundant info I learnt on my tech course.

I totally agree that you have to live your own life and I advise my kids the same. That said, I left school and had kids straight away...now I can only do Open University because it's the only option open to me and it sucks...you're never too old to learn but dropping adult responsibilities to go to university...well, that can be next to impossible. I will graduate in 2017, aged 39. Meanwhile, because of the years I spent raising my kids I have almost zero work experience so I'm stuck in a dead-end low-wage job. However, if I'd done things in the *right* order I wouldn't have had kids at all... It's all about checks and balances - ultimately you just have to do whatever feels right and hope it works out.

I understand how you feel. I have a lot of pressure from my parents and family to go to university because they think that's the solution to life. I've been having a great experience working, meeting new people and I don't regret holding off university for now. Obviously there are some repercussions because they don't understand why I made that decision. Therefore I'm constantly judged by family and the people around as if I've fucked up or something but in reality I'm perfectly happy, financially stable and having a great experience. It's just bloody frustrating to try and defend myself because they aren't happy for the life I'm living.

My words exactly. I had a friend who worked in geriatrics and she told me when the patients were asked what they would change in their life, if they had the option, they often replied 'do less what others wanted me to do and more what i wanted'. I will be 36 when I will start my study. Many people says that they really inpressed because they woundn't do that and I'm proud of myself. Some people says that I'm silly, but I don't care. It is my life and it is my responsebility to make myself happy and it will when I will do this. The reason why I do this now is because I had a cruel childhood.

Thats exactly my opinion! I just discontinued my high school, and I am going to work abroad.Even tough soooo many ppl´ve told me, u have to finish high school, yes i know that, but i can do it year or two or three years later! Because right now i was so depressed i hated school, and i couldn study anything! So I encourge all of u who are scared to do something similiar, if you feel 100 percent sure, even after considering pros and cons, you need to do it. Its your life and i would rather regret something that i have done not something i was scared to do.

I was told that I was going to school, and that I had no choice. Honestly, it wasn’t an entirely bad choice as I did discover qualities about myself that were until that point unknown, but I wasn’t ready. Now I have a degree, and debt. I’m not unthankful for the support that I did receive, but I wasn’t mentally prepared, and a lot of family problems ended up tanking my grades in the end. I think about returning to school everyday, but I’m too afraid of accruing more debt, and of doing the “wrong thing.” Honestly, my annoyance with people telling me what I should like is starting to overcome my fear of failure.

I had a place at Liverpool JMU when I was 18 but I was pressured by my mum to get a job instead (we were quite poor and uni wasn't a thing in our family) but I can honestly say I think it was the best thing, I was lucky to get a job where I could progress and I became very experienced in my field, I even had a company in Dubai chasing me to work for them. I went to uni to formalise my experience a few years ago at 35 and the age range of the course was 20 to 55, I'm starting a masters in a few months - not because I need to, I just kind of enjoy the academic side.

Interesting topic. Obviously for some people going to uni is waste of time and for some it is not. It depends on many things. Of course going to uni does not make people smarter. I went to uni when I was 29. That time almost all of my relatives did not like it, but I did it.

If I had started at 18(or in my case, not dropped out), I probably wouldn't have made it anyways, as there was some huge life changing(in a bad way) things that happened last year, and this year isnt looking too good either. I tried again this year(22 y.o) but I just cant get in the groove, and I find work and school simultaneously to be overwhelming right now. I might wait till I'm 25-27ish. Scholarships are a bit off limits cause of my fuckups when I was 18, but at least I'll have time to save.

Here in Spain I just finished High School and I'm 16, and I will loose a year because I chose something I don't really like but I'll choose something that I like next year, now I'll probably go to University when I'm 21 while my friend will go with 19 (because I chose a path where you can actually do practical stuff and learn the specific thing you want, but it's 4 years before University, while he chose a path where you learn a lot of useless crap (history, literature and stuff) but it's "more hard" (which doesn't have to) and it's only 2 years (he's 17)), and I feel like I'm advancing slower than other people in my generation, and it's just THAT feeling, the feeling of "I'm behind my generation" or "I'm worse than my generation". And me and my friend even want to study the same thing.

Depends on the field. Software developers look for professional qualifications as the graduate and post graduate degrees tend to have little bearing on the skills required by the industry. That said, I wished I had been older when I went to university. I was too young and had too little experience of work and life to understand what a massive opportunity university represented. I got a good degree and had a great time but I never really worked hard at it. I'd spend so much more time in the libraries now.

Do you like your job? Do you see yourself building a career out of what you do? If so, then forget about uni, it's overrated! Especially now with tuition fees being just unfairly and ridiculously overpriced, there's no point in wasting three years of your life just to get you a silly piece of paper that just basically allows you to go on job interviews. Uni is not for everyone and is not needed for everything. Do you want to be a professional photographer (I think you said this once)? Then all you need is creativity and the right people, so they can push you in the right direction and teach you the very basics, I guess the rest is up to you ;)
