I used to crew on a offshore race boat. M19 the other Atlantic city. When we ran open splitters(couldn't run thermostats) the engines would be hot to the touch(240 using infrared temp gun), but bay temp (55-60) on the temp gouges. We ended up with 3/4" restricters and block Temps came in line with temp gouges 165-170 after that.we were moving water through the blocks to fast without the restricters. So not transferring heat from the blocks to the water. The restricters slowed the water down enough to allow the heat to transfer out of the blocks into the water.

Also a restrictor on the outlet at the thermostat housing helps the spinning water pump build coolant pressure in the block to prevent steam pocket formation. Thus helping to keep the block side of the cooling system absolutely full of liquid improving heat transfer at all internally wet areas.

@@jlfastride1 Exactly why race engines with mechanical water pumps would usually use plates with different orifice sizing to control coolant temperature, replacing the thermostat.

Freedom would be pretty sick in my 66 chevelle. Mine started shooting the dipstick out 2nd pass after I bought the car. The seller told me it was a fresh build but im finding it looks like it was put together with whatever was laying around. I took it apart and it had pretty deep scoring in most the cylinders. The builder swears up and down its fine and that it should just be put back together. Man when you said "here's you a real motor so you can stop running that junk yard crap" I felt like you where speaking to me.

The Engine Masters show from Hot Rod did a mechanical fan test, it should be on YT. Evans Coolant was one of the first to do actual water pump testing in the 1980's , some info might be floating around. I'd expect 2 HP but don't hols me to that. With the wheels straight ahead, a PS pump is just recirculating fluid so maybe 1/4 hp. Say you have an alternator that is outputting 100 Amps at 14.2 Volts. A times V is 1,420 watts. One HP is 745 Watts so 1,420 divided by 745 is 1.9 HP. Factor in electrical efficiency losses as well as alternator cooling fan and drive belt losses and I'd expect to see 3.5 HP. 100 A is a lot of power and I'd only expect to see that kind of draw right after cranking the engine until the battery recharges. Going to electrical driven items does not reduce engine loads unless you can shut those accessories off since you are just moving the load from a belt to the electrical system that the alternator needs to power. Remember, at idle an engine isn't making much power so even a small load will drag it down. Think about it, a big cam engine does not have enough power to overcome friction at low RPM.

I think it’s interesting how you spec and size your cams, I understand you have stated before that you don’t need to run that much lift or excessive duration for your turbo motors but if you could go more aggressive in terms of ramps/lift/duration/timing, what are the current limiting factors of doing so with the current valve train geometry? I would love to hear what your future engine platforms valvetrain could be like.

Q & A?! Oh boy we LOVE Q & A! (Only very important stuff of course, such as...) How much does Dewey weigh and does he prefer kibbles or bits? How's about this one as it's better; does Dewey snore and how old is he? 😃 WE love doggos as they love us, unconditionally. We can't use the FREEDOM engine as those days are long behind us plus there's nothing worthy sitting around to stuff it into, however we do appreciate what it takes to design, engineer, manufacture and properly test a product such as your SMX & SML so our collective hat is off to you Steve and once again, the best of luck to the winner! Looking forward to more intellectually stimulating content and of course both Kyle's Mustang as well as your Wagon churning those big tires down the 1320. Cheers!

@bobroberts2371

Steve has a vid where he recommends checking lash when the engine is cold. This way things are more consistent since what is considered a " hot " engine can vary. I'm pretty sure he did check lash when at a specific hot running temp , then checked after an overnight cool down to get his cold numbers.

Hi Steve I have a question you might want to answerin a future video. A while back you built a naturally aspirated 475 ci LS with a 4.375” stroke. In that video you mentioned that it would need a shorter stroke if boosted. This was because the long stroke LS crank does not have enough material overlap between the main and rod journals. So my question is. Would a 4.375” LS crank with Cleveland 2.749 mains and 2.2” rod journals work in a boosted application? With those specs journal overlap is more than it would be in an LS with 4.125” stroke and only slightly less than a 4.000” stroke crank with its stock 2.556” mains and 2.1” rod journals. Thanks Steve

Why not build/design a more bulletproof engine when you got the possibilites with cnc machining? Use our billetbock but copy lets say AMG M156 heads and size them to fit the block both in size and flow. You get superior valve mechanism. Lobes are hammering directly on the valvestems. No more lifterproblems, no more rockerarm problems, u can use softer vavlesprings = less wear. Just skip the variable valvetiming to make it easier.
