@@ronwallace6273 Army had 82nd, 3rd, and 101st for high drill standards. But some units are not maintained to standards. I grant you, I had Army indoc during a summer at Ft Knox, and later, I had Marine Basic at PI, and I must say that the Drill Instructors at both places were equally strict and precise. The commands to which graduates report afterward, allow this to remain or relapse. For the Corps, drill remains emphasized, especially since every base has school units of some kind. Army has too many bases where this is not seen as a need. I grant you, Army 3rd and Marine Barracks 8th & I could hold a drill-off from reveille to taps, and neither would lose.

NAVMC 2691 did not say this, as I recall, but Marine Drill Instructors did say it. That young man must have forgotten. Do any of you remember the Pyle in your unit who would centipede step to get back in step?

Yeah I was thoroughly tuned. These young Marines were so friggin tight and they had that look. Their DI was like check my shit out when he strutted by. One of the Nam vets who was with the “traveling wall” stepped to the curb came to attention and rendered a perfect hand salute till they all passed by. I swear the DI had a tear in his eyes. It was a defining moment. Anyway my son’s travels took him the way we all go. He ended up in Mag 29, New River. He made us very proud. Semper Fidelis. 60-64

The fun part is when you get 5+ commands before the "March" in a marching band march off... (start with 200 people and if you get caught screwing up, you drop out till one is left.)

I have been retired for years, but I still run cadences and drill patterns in my head. I so miss the pride of my platoon as I sang cadence. You could see their chests swell up as they leaned back and drove the heels.

But US military drill and marching band are so very different. Bands marching 8-to-5, with those bandmasters nitpicking about foot movement, would disrupt anyone's concentration. A Marine stands with each foot toed out 15° from center, and maintains the similar foot to ankle position in stride, except for half-step, while keeping a good 120 cadence, 6 steps to 5 yards. Marching band either demands some exaggerated toe-up, straight-line foot movement, like square dancing, or toe-in, toe-down, like the tango. That band business is not easy.
