I grant you, I had Army indoc during a summer at Ft Knox, and later, I had Marine Basic at PI, and I must say that the Drill Instructors at both places were equally strict and precise. The commands to which graduates report afterward, allow this to remain or relapse. For the Corps, drill remains emphasized, especially since every base has school units of some kind. From the initial inspection that they purposely make you fail, to the gong show the night before leaving training. These truly was best experience I never want to go through again.

The fact that I've been in that building, at that location, and yelled at in the same way unsettles me...

Oh it was painful, but I loved every minute of it. How crazy is that. I wasn't a Marine. I went to the Army 82nd Airborne Division.

But US military drill and marching band are so very different. Bands marching 8-to-5, with those bandmasters nitpicking about foot movement, would disrupt anyone's concentration. A Marine stands with each foot toed out 15° from center, and maintains the similar foot to ankle position in stride, except for half-step, while keeping a good 120 cadence, 6 steps to 5 yards. Marching band either demands some exaggerated toe-up, straight-line foot movement, like square dancing, or toe-in, toe-down, like the tango. That band business is not easy.
