CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Iceman (Val Kilmer) and Maverick (Tom Cruise) are reconciled and Maverick decides to become a Top Gun instructor.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."
CREDITS:

Cast: Tom Cruise, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, Tim Robbins, James Tolkan
Director: Tony Scott

It's really difficult to see Val Kilmer was so happy, healthy, and fit here, and to see how much his health suffered recently. But it was very heartwarming to see Iceman and Maverick have a true genuine friendship in Maverick, their reunion was very touching and bittersweet.

Even more, they really became friends. You can see it the way Iceman’s wife hugs Maverick. He didn’t just protect him out of respect. Yes, he finally saw the value in Mavericks style of flying, but they also kept a strong bond going, which is probably something that really saved Maverick from grounding himself over his guilt about Goose

Iceman was never a bad dude. He was more of the team player. He was only concerned of Mavs' reckless flying. If you ever played Final Fantasy 8, Seifer is like Iceman. Val played a realistic heel but not someone you would totally hate.

Seifer is more like the anti hero but he doesn’t play by the book.. Quite the opposite of Iceman. Iceman is the by book type.
@gamester512
@gamester512 3 ай бұрын
@@GeorgiaAndrea Ironically, Iceman would be more like Squall and Maverick would be more like Seifer. Maverick was willing to do some very reckless and dangerous stuff (which made him unpredictable, and this is actually a great trait to have in a fight as it makes it that much harder for an enemy to anticipate what you're going to do) to get the job done, albeit not at the cost of _intentionally_ putting others in danger. But Iceman was very much by the book and kept to the straight and narrow, never letting his emotions get the better of him, and that is much more in line with Squall who could always keep his head where it needed to be and focus on getting the job done in the most efficient way possible, and then leaving any emotional baggage for later. In a sense, Iceman and Maverick are two sides of the same coin, hence why they worked so well together in that dogfight. Even if Iceman was sure _what_ Maverick was going to do, he trusted him enough to know that it would most likely work or at the very least throw the enemy off their game and confuse/rattle them. And Maverick could count on Iceman being able to capitalize on any openings he got.

I cried so much when Iceman was pronounced dead in the sequel. The common trope of “enemies now friends” was well executed in the first movie, and I love how they wrote Val Kilmer’s current condition into the script, it really adds to the story.. My mom’s ex boyfriend was the father figure I didn’t have for the years when it mattered, And though my mother and him moved on almost 20 years ago, our families managed to stay connected through it all. The man who think of when I hear “Dad” has now been in the final stage of cancer, and his family knew two things: 1. It could be literally any day 2. He loves Top Gun So we all rented a theater for his whole family, himself, my mother, and I to all see Top Gun Maverick together. We laid a bed out for him in the walkway between the seat aisles, and I was gifted with one of the most special nights of my life that I’ll never forget, being able to see Top Gun 2 with my father. Ultimately, We’ve lived separate lives since I was a child, and the times I do see him became more fleeting as I grew into an adult. But after the movie was finished, everyone hugged, said their goodbyes, and shed tears, I knew there was so much I could say to the man who helped my mother when she needed it most. I could’ve said dwelled on the memories of when he said he’d be there in my birthdays, but didn’t show up. But as an adult, I understood he has many regrets of his own, and may never be able to get closure for so many mistakes he made, or know if his successes were realized. As I was about to get into my car and leave, I ran back over as he was getting in his truck, And quoted this moment to him. As expected, he replied verbatim with the follow up quote, as we hugged, and both drove our separate ways for the night. I realize now, through all the disappointments and grudges we hold, All it really takes is stepping up, and trying to make the last moment, the best it can possible be. And if it really is, it’ll be the one you go back to the most after the fact. I’m not a poet, so this doesn’t have the flare it could, But it was that Top Gun showed me sometimes, the way through a bad moment in your life, or a damaged relationship, Is relating to something they love, and loving it with them.

I remember watching this when I was a little kid and just seeing the action with the dogfights and the planes takin off was enough for me to love it but now, watching this now in my 20s, just hits different. Seeing Maverick’s growth from the start of the movie as a reckless, cocky, lone wolf with something to prove to then lose Goose in a accident and evolve into a endearing and forward thinking team player was so seamless and well acted by Tom, and to see Iceman, Hollywood and the rest of the squad accept him at the end was just perfect. This movie will never get old, timeless.
