I though that as well, but it's actually not that hard once you try to learn it. All those pull offs to open strings kind of help you to move around. It's not an easy riff in general, but it get easier once you play it a few times at a slower tempo

I said the same thing about Sungha Jung's version of wonderful tonight when I was younger. I spent several months trying to get it right. Now it's my favorite thing to play. Same thing with a lot of Trace Bundy and Tommy Emmanuel stuff. Seems impossible but you just take it a little step at a time and before you know it all your friends will be like 😯 Edit: sorry, it's actually Ulli [insert long German last name here]'s version of the song. I misspoke. But Sungha is the reason I learned it. 😂

this riff is SO fun to play and was surprisingly (somewhat) easy to learn. i'm not a great guitar player so i thought i was in for a ROUGH time trying to learn it, but the amount of open strings, hammer-ons and pull-offs make the riff flow so naturally. and you're right. i can play this riff over and over and never get bored of it lol

I could be completely wrong but their style consists of a lot of open strings and weird arpeggio patterns. Their chords seem to be standard 7th and 9th chords but in like the 2nd or 3rd inversions. I really dig their music. I grew up playing guitar in the late 80's so their style is somewhat foreign to me. I hear it but playing it is completely different. I wish I could find a video about how they do their arpeggios. Mark has talked about how he plays between chords but that's all I could really find on the subject. Misha and Jake are also phenomenal in their song writing and playing. Jake is John Petrucci's nephew. I didn't know that until a year or so ago. They did a video together for DiMarzio pickups.

correction - 'You can play this Mark Holcomb riff FOREVER and not get bored" seriously, the intro riff for It's Only Smiles is one of my favourite things to play on guitar. I also recommend some Luke Hoskin riffs (my favourite guitarist ever) if you wanna feel fucking good playing guitar. There are a bunch of riffs in The Dissentience which are just downright fantastic and gorgeous, as well as a lot on Fortress like the Sequoia Throne tapping intro and THAT tapping section, as well as the soaring post-intro lead in Palms Read.

Not expecting to find a fellow Truke simp here, h5 While nowadays I prefer their newer stuff I wish they would try to write a few songs as a jam like the Fortress era, the crazy rhythm of that album is so fun. I still place Palimpsest at the top but, man Luke writing on guitar pro more often than not result in glorious riff yet a nightmare to play (Little Snakes) Can't wait for the new album.

@@tylerhawksmoor9601 Pacific myth just brutal in general, i think Volition and PM have a vibe guitar wise. Harbinger is my fav cuz the rarely written actual solo, granted it's the easiest part of the whole song lol. Say do you know what Palms Read is about? I enjoy Rody's lyric more the older I get, but the bigger than life lyrics hits from Fortress still a banger. I still don't get what Arif tried to say in Palms Read though.

Sorry for an immature question, I started to play guitar not long ago. Lately I have dived into learning how to write a song or build a solo. I know there are pentatonic scales and chord progressions, but may I know how this kind of genre music (I think this is called math rock) are wrote? I 'm not sure if I'm on the right route of learning or understanding it.
