In this video I have a look at a 2009 Kia Sedona that was brought in with a P0501. It didn't take long to find out that the ABS module was not communicating. Simple enough... bad fuse right. Why did the fuse blow? Great question. -Enjoy!

Tell him you drove in the road debris that ACCUMULATES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE WHITE LINE. If your customer is lucky the fuse will not blow again and the nails/glass/screws and stuff will not puncture a tire! OR you could say - "I checked everything but the "one little thing" that's blowing that *@^$&-fuse.. When I have a dream and the Good Lord tells me what that one little thing is, I will call you and fix it for no additional charge. 'Til then you owe X-Hrs x 65.50 = ..." alot. ---- This advice is free; carry some spare fuses and a needle-nose. Lease Kia's or trade them in before the bumper to bumper warranty 5yr/60,000 mi.? runs out. Add an extended warranty when you buy it. Add an extended warranty before the factory warranty runs out. Don't buy a Kia. Ha ha - just kidding. Negotiate an extra warranty on fuses when you buy the car. Take fuse problems to trade schools.

Yep I'd have done the same thing. No sense wasting $$ in labor or guessing at parts but I agree with the fuse thermal cycle failure. I've never experienced it & every fuse that I've found blown will sooner or later pop again and once it happens again it's time to investigate further but the ones that happen only once every few months time is making a logical call on diagnostic fees vs parts cost & most logical failure components and what the customer wants to do. I prefer to wait until a hard failure as long as it isn't safety related or will strand the customer. Bottom line is whether the customer agrees to the repair or not and they sign the RO. Enjoyed the video and I'm recovering from my stem cell transplant and am starting to work on cars again. Just fixed an 06 Jeep 4.0L that wouldn't start in cold weather hit or engine temp went below 100 degrees & would only crank for @2.5 seconds and then starter would disengage. It's been to multiple dealerships and independent repair shops and they threw 3 starters, 2 PCMs, multiple CMP/CKP sensore, CTS, ASD & starter relays and after 5 yrs it left these shops with the customer and Jeep broke. It would eventually start after about 10 minutes of crank no starts and backfiring. I wanted to get my hands on it b/c it sounded interesting & it was a friend who was the Service Mgr at the Goodyear Service Center. His wife was driving his 2019 Challenger and he wanted his wife's Jeep fixed so he could drive his Challenger again. Pico got a workout but was getting ready to borescope cylinders for coolant & fuel while cold in AM & scope secondary with the Pico Mixmaster & shook my head when I seen the plugs (3 carbon tracked and all 6 with >.080" gaps worn to porcelain. Cylinders borescoped good @ secondary scoped fine after sparkplugs replaced & base timing adjusted & it left my shop starting every day in 37 degree weather first time every time.. I gave him a huge break on the bill but he wanted no part of it and gave me more than I would have charged a regular customer. He was so happy to get his Challenger back from his wife and I was satisfied to fix his Jeep and would have done it for free just b/c I hadn't worked on a customer's car in such a long time. Thanks for putting out all the fantastic videos b/c that's what helped energize me when I was in the hospital going thru chemo and the stem cell transplant & am now recovering from AML and soon I'll be back at it thanks to God!!

As a fellow shop owner I can certainly say there's a wisdom in knowing when to pull the plug on a repair....and a lot of self control involved in following through. Being "upside down" on a repair financially doesn't help, but that is a problem that isn't going to correct itself either way. Cheers!

As opposed to tearing the entire front end of the car to shreds, detonating a small tactical nuclear device above car, ripping awful aftermarket birds nest out... or putting paperclip in place of fuse and watching it burn! nah, jk.

Last Tuesday I had lean codes P0171 then P0174 come on in my Chevrolet LS1 V8 powered Holden VY SS Commodore & I thought that it was nothing other than it being a hot 45°C summer day over here in Australia where some cars were even overheating. The check engine thing come on after I pulled out of the car park,I retrieved the codes then cleared them,I also noticed that the fuel trim readings on the left bank was 25% & 23% on the right bank. I drove it to town last Friday & the check engine thing came on again after turning right off a round about, down the road it started chugging a bit so I pulled into the local BP service station & checked the MAF tube worm clamps to see if they're tight, they were a bit loose on a 35-37°C day. The heat softened the plastic & caused the clamps to come loose, after I went to the supermarket I went home & plugged my scan tool in & retrieved misfire codes for cylinders 4 & 6 (P0354 & P0356). I believe it was caused by the air leak so it was a lean misfire, the fuel trims went down to 14.8% on both banks & I drove car in last Saturday to do my main shopping, that was on a 46°C day & the check engine thing never came back on, the fuel trim remained at 14.8% on both sides ! Edit 6.1.20 - This confused me but the misfire codes came back today ,it was due to a lousy connector which was half off,the blue retaining tab that GM fit onto the connector wore down & slipped out so I just fitted a cable tie onto it so it won't happen again in the future !

Loved the “thorough testing” haha. When I replaced the clutch in my brother’s scion last year he went on the test drive with me and was unhappy with how rough I was being with it. I asked “Will you ever drive it like this?” He said “No way!” I said “Okay, so after it survived me driving, do you believe it will now survive anything you do to it?” And that’s when the lightbulb went on :)

Back in the day when I worked at a dealer, our technical assistance people had a good recommendation. If you have numerous items being powered off one fuse you could find where they branch off the main power feed and install a fuse there. You would be isolating each circuit at that point so if the problem occurred again it would only pop the fuse specific to that circuit power feed. I like your idea of the amp clamp though too, that way you don't have to splice a fuse inline.

Hey Eric, I know exactly how this feels. I’m a diesel mechanic and primarily work on electrical and emissions related diagnostics. I have had many instances of intermittent datalink issues traced back to shorted wiring. These are the worst to diagnose in my experience, as sometimes the short only occurs once every 50 drive cycles. I follow the same process as you to replicate shorts, but one tip I will recommend is washing the vehicle. I’m from Southern Ontario, Canada and I find that the water from the wash mixes with the road brine and can sometimes bridge the gap of the short, and give some direction. This of course relies on it being a rubbed through harness, and the water contacting the section. Thanks for the videos, you have helped me advance my diagnostic skills over the years.

In my experience 'best cry" or as you call it "best try" usually taps ino something they shouldnt. Could it be the remote start popping the fuse when cycled? In my experience with those aftermarket installers they tap into something, car has an issue afterwards, when asked about issue they always say no we wouldnt go near that system only for you to take the car apart and find their handiwork all over it

Protip to save old weary backs is to get one of those 6-8 inch hand/shaving mirrors from the dollar store to look under the dash. I got tired of crawling around between the floor, seat, and steering wheel and you'd be surprised what you can learn to do backwards looking through a mirror.

Odds are it has something to do with `Best Try's rem,ote starter install. Wonder if they shorted out two wires when they were cutting open wiring harnesses. I watched but didn't notice if you tried using the remote starter and then see if that fuse was burnt out again. My gut feeling - it has something to do with that remote starter and their install... yeah, which could take forever to find.
