As a trombone/euphonium player with a pretty impressive range, I just can't seem to understand how Wycliffe can just hit those high notes like it's nothing without any tone diminishing

im pretty sure that's an alto trombone? which obviously has a different range though with good lip technique you can absolutely go that high, ive recently started learning it but i have a lot of unlearning to do

It's funny. I switched to learning the trombone last year, and it was Wycliffe I looked up to. When I went back to the tenor horn, it was Owen Farr who I started listening to. now I see both world's combine.🙃 @@alexabc220

Wycliffe is a super cool guy. He‘s from Augusta where I live, and he hangs out at my dads house every now and then. There’s a video on my channel of them just jamming with Wycliffe on trombone (of course) and my dad on piano and a few other friends of theirs.

how do you do a flutter like that at the end on trombone? on trumpet its easy because you just move the valves but on trombone i have no idea lol

(as I understand it as a composer but not a brass player) Holding the same slide position and alternating really fast between partials. Basically a super controlled shake. Damn difficult, but doable if you're a god like Wycliffe and if you're in that tenor register of the instrument.

It's called a lip trill, trumpet players do it too without moving the valves. Not that I eve practiced enough to get good at it, but it's basically just using your lips to flip between partials quickly. His ability to control how fast he was trilling at the end there really impressed me.

You want to hear a singing trombone? John Alessi playing Harvest trombone concerto by Mackey. Holy moly. I was at the premier of that song and can still hear it today. Absolutely heavenly.
