So you play on pad, but you want the benefits of arcade stick buttons. Well now, you can have both. Let's have a look at this fan made controller by "Ikzilion" that might actually be exactly what a huge number of pad players have been looking.
What do you think? Is this the ultimate controller for pad players who want arcade style buttons? Comment below!
Got a controller you want me to try? Send it to me (email details on my KZfaq "About" page).

Such a cool idea! One of the few layouts that've yet been made widely available. I feel like as time goes on we discover more that there really isn't a best input method aside from what feels best for the individual player.

I think it needs the two halves to be slightly angled, much like the hit boxes have their buttons angled, but otherwise--I am blown away. This is an interesting idea. I wonder what it would be like to harvest or find new-old stock of the micro switched thumb stick from the NeoGeo Pocket consoles or the the NeoGeo CD pads. That could be quite the experience as well.

This is almost exactly what I've been wanting! I say "almost" because this seems like it would be awkward to hold, especially if you're in a heated match and/or playing for more than a few minutes. Personally what I would've done is have the d-pad on something that resembles a Wii Nunchuck, able to comfortably hold it in your left hand while the buttons sit on your lap and the two connected by a cable.

10:45 Without actual practice with the design I can't say for sure this is the answer, but what I feel would work is turning the Dpad + arcade stick buttons combination into something similar to a wii controller, that is, have a nunchuck style controller in your left hand with a D pad, maybe even 1 or 2 shoulder buttons, and connect that piece to a traditional style arcade stick desing that has the main buttons and you can hold in place in your lap. At least in theory I think it should work, but I haven't seen anyone try a similar desing to have actual proof 😅

The evolution of this idea would be a nunchuk setup, where you can hold the dpad in one hand, and it is independent of buttons, which would be on a separate pad. The buttons could rest on a table, and the directional pad nunchuk could be held and moved in however way you wanted.

Interesting idea, I would consider an option to divide it into two parts. One section contains the dpad that can be "detached", so it can be held in one hand, and place the section of the buttons on a flat surface. That way, one does not need to grip the whole tablet.

The only thing I can think to get rid of the dpad issue would be making it modular. Something like the wii mote to hold it freely , but instead of a stick on the nunchuck its just a dpad with a cable. The box could even be made as a regular arcade stick and the dpad as an accessory that would use the stick inputs. Not sure if the space needed for the dpad to work that way is enough to make it that small tho.

After using a stick for a while, I find it counter-intuitive to dedicate my whole hand to movement inputs instead of my thumb. You get much, much more fine control with a stick, especially if you master the "goblet/wine glass" lever grip. Same problem with hotbox/mixbox but they get better as your hand gets used to them, where as pad remains problematic by design

I've had an idea to make a fight pad-like controller but specifically for 2d games like platformers or top down rpgs that's based around comfort. It would be thin, and have a layout similar to a hitbox controller but the action buttons and the directional buttons are far apart, and it would also have an analog stick off to the left side a lot like the dpad is in this controller. It would also be able to angle itself to where the end that is facing you will tilt upwards to make using it while sitting up more comfortable, or be able to bend in the center so your wrists can sit at a natural angle. This idea mostly comes from me loving to use a keyboard for playing Hollow Knight and wanting a cleaner experience and to be able to use it from the couch. using individual buttons for movement feels so much nicer than a stick or dpad to me.

id say to keep the controller stable in your lap make where you would grip the controller a spacious hole buy putting a angular bar around the outside of your hand where you would grip the controller and then even though you'd ideally only be gripping one side, mirror it on the other side so that it lays level and the bars will keep your hand elevated and protected so you hand isn't being pinned by your leg and can also be used as legs or feet so to speak to keep it level in your lap or on a table.

not sure if mentioned already but there's a "thumb pro arcade" stick that i've been wanting to buy. i reached out to them a year or so ago and they were active, but it now says out of stock and they didn't reply to my message using their contact form. it has what seems to be the dualshock dpad in a custom "grip" mounted to a box with the arcade buttons. i'm now going to try to make my own if i can't get my hands on one.

9:40 to 11:20 I'd always thought the solution to D-Pad plus arcade layout was to take a bit of design from the Wii. One lap box with your action buttons (the Wiimote equivilant) and a corded bit you could hold in your left hand with a D-pad or thumbstick (nun chuck equivilant) Edit: Scrolling down I see I'm not the only one thinking of the wiimote/nunchuck as a basis. Also, random interjection about best d-pad... I think if the Hori FC Octa could have been clicky it would be perfect. I like the disk/cup dpad over the xbox plus, ps psuedo seperate (unless they've changed they are 1 pad but with a bit of controller shell over them), and joycon really seperate.

I actually think I'd love to have one of these with a circular dpad

If you made two separate controllers separated by a wire or wirelessly so it would be like a joycon and a pad for your lap or desk. I'd use it as is to be honest.

I think the best way to handle this is creating some kind of Dpad on top of a hand grip that protrudes from the stick itself so that you grip your hand under it like wine glass style but the top has a big enough surface for the Dpad. Ergonomically would take a bit get it right for hands to not cause fatigue but it would work with this hybrid style without the stick itself moving all over the place.

I can't see this while video now but will do so later; but I have to ask 1. Does this work for the Nintendo Switch and 2. Where can I get one? This is something I have want for years. Ideally I would lay it flat on a surface, use my left thumb to navigate the pad and right fingers to piano the buttons. Having a the precision of a dpad is more ideal than a stick and large buttons help connect combos better.

Put the bigger buttons on the back for the fingers and smaller peripheral buttons collected near the right thumb?

What if you make a hole in left side of the controller, a hole that can fit your hand when you insert your fingers there so that like what you said, you left hand are not that like but also you can remove your hand freely without lifting the controller?

This is almost perfect, just needs a circular Saturn or Nomad D-Pad and it would be S tier. Also, what headphones are those?

I wonder if it would be possible to have the D Pad portion separate from the part with the buttons, and connected with a wire. That way, your left hand would be JUST LIKE a controller. The downside might be that the connections to the board are longer than usual... I wonder if this would add delay.

No delay, electrical connections are kinda like water pipes in that the water at one end of the pipe pushes the water throughout the whole pipe and it comes out at the other end instantly. While we think of electricity as mystery magic being carried through a wire, it’s actually electrons pushing on each other.

to my knowledge normally with pad controllers with 6 buttons on the face you brace it with your palm or between your legs slightly or on your thigh... if i recall correctly.
It's EVEN BETTER now...【Fighting Commander OCTA】
