Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Hi Ron I don't even have one camo clothing I usually hunt with shorts and a shirt and tekkies it's comfortable with that. Camouflage clothing is just a want to have.

I’ve been wearing my black and green plaid wool heavy shirt for over 30 years. I never understood why people buy expensive camouflage when there are requirements to wear an orange hat and vest.

It's about not moving so much. I agree with you about camo. Some colors I avoid for sure, like white, blue, and yellow.

I never wear camouflage, I don't see the point since I have to wear orange here anyway, just being still and quiet works for me!

When my profession was looking for enemy troops and trying to stay hidden myself, I learned that humans are easier to fool than animals. The higher executive functions gloss over important details that would contribute to survival in the woods. Animals live out there full time and know intimately the details of their areas. If I could plant sensors for detection of humans, I had to plant them in a way that would prevent animals from digging them up. This usually involved copious amounts of my urine.

I use camo because most high quality hunting clothing is only offered in camo. Although I do have a few pieces of Sitka gear in earth tones.

I use a grilled suit. The last 3 deer I killed were each about 7 yards away.

Only way I use camo is if I am using a ghillie suit to go with it. That way I don't have a flat surface. I once hid from my dogs for just under 30 minutes before they finally found me.

I like black or dark green hats, gloves and dark jackets. I can blend right in but then I have to get out of my truck and wrap myself in a blanket of blaze orange.😪

I got a bunch of army jungle camo stuff for real cheap a while ago, maybe I've just become better at hunting or this stuff actually works. Got my closest deer this year at about 60 yards

I remember a day at this time of the year that I was bow hunting back in New Jersey. Over 50 years ago. It was a warm day and I was wearing jeans and a white T-shirt. It was a beautiful afternoon. I was doing a slow, slow, walk through woods. This doe comes up from behind me and dam near bumped into my left leg. I don't know why I didn't hear it coming, but if I had and had pulled my knife, I could have grabbed the thing and killed it with the knife. I remember it like it happened this morning. I didn't get a shot with the bow, as by the time I got over the surprise, all I could have done was shoot it in the ass.

I’ve killed deer in blue jeans and a white t shirt. Movement or standing in the wide open is what screw’s you up. If you’re going to stop walking , always stop beside a tree or bush

Color can save you from an "accident". But one can be *camouflaged* in colors, even from humans, by being still and using concealment to break up your form. Motion will catch a deer's eye faster than anything. I have some selfies of me sitting in front of a deer stand wearing a reflective hat(yellow, orange, reflective silver stripe), light grey shirt, and faded khaki pants, while a deer feeds along the woodline less than 20 yards from me. She had come out from the woods to a feeder about 70 yards out, before turning my way and feeding along the edge. She went about 100 yards behind me and then crossed the trail. The proper wind is also crucial. [I was waiting on sundown, hoping some hogs would come to the feeder and it was too hot to get up in the stand, but they didn't show before full dark and I did not have my NV or thermal scoped guns with me.]

Such as the guy aiming at the movement he saw in the brush? Or the guy aiming at a deer without noticing the humans standing 100 yards behind it? There some pragmatic reasons to "show up" in the field. Because humans see color well (except color-blind ones, of course) and most game animals do not, I prefer a bit of bright color, generally blaze orange since it is mandatory in many jurisdictions. I've yet to see solid evidence that it has cost me game. I've had multiple animals walk within bow range as I stood or sat against a tree while wearing blaze cap and vest. I've sat on grassy hillsides and called coyotes inside of 100 yards. Etc. etc. Suit yourself. Good luck.

No,you don't need it. I use it because it usually has more pockets and I'm more concerned about hunters seeing me .

Sorry for my cynism, but human animals are the exact reason I wear camo when hunting. I can count on more than one hand the number of times that I looking through binoculars saw hunters looking at me through their rifle scopes. Second time that happened, I stopped wearing blaze. I know that for every 1 reckless and irresponsible hunters, there are a 1000 good ones. I just don't want to take any chances.

Yours is a common argument/reason for wearing camo, Abby, but I'm not sure it's the right one. Seems to me irresponsible "scope glassers" would be more or equally likely to "glass" a suspicious dark object or camo motion as one in a bright color. "What's that deer colored thing beside that rock/tree/bush? Put your scope on it and check." What do you think? Just seems more likely they'd scope you if you resembled the color of game.

Camo for hunting animals is pointless. Camo was created in the military to not be seen by people.

I think its over rated, camo, its all overpriced and under built. Our grandads and great grandads wore regular clothes until woodland came around and tha was surplus stuff. Im willing to bet surplus would probably hold up better.

You need to break up your human figure. If you wear one pattern you look like a fool in a jumpsuit to a deer. Go with patches of solid colors, different patterns, and different pants. U/V and shiny fabrics are more important anyway.
