Having a substantial blade on your belt as a backup while in grizz country is still very important. When it comes to carrying a long spear? If you were traveling by horseback, I can totally see how it could be justified! It would be particularly great for defending both your horse AND you!

When I first moved to Alaska I bought a used 458 Win Mag Ruger M77. Shortly after I bought a 9.3x62mm Husky model 640. The 458 Win Mag is a protection rifle. The 9.3 is a hunting rifle that can also protect me up close. To each their own of course. I'd rather have too much gun than not enough.

Assuming that a couple hundred less FPS is a bad thing might be a mistake. There is a line of thinking that staying in mid-range velocity, say 2600, 2700fps might be one of the magical ingredients that made old-timers like the 6.5 Swede and 7x57 such consistent performers, seemingly well beyond their theoretical performance on paper. Maybe something to do with dwell time, who knows. The 243 is a well proven, effective round, extremely popular with good reason. However, if...IF...the Grendel is equally effective on game, one cannot escape the fact that the 6.5 is doing it more efficiently (less powder), in a smallerer platform, with a shorter barrel, and in a milder fashion. Having said all that, the Grendel falls short of the Swede and the x57 when it comes to SD. One simply can't load the heavy-for-caliber projectiles, while fitting an AR or mini-mauser, that seemingly gave the old girls their stellar penetration. That may negate some of the magic of those rounds. Regardless, i love the performance the Grendel so mildly gives out of a svelte little bolt gun or standard AR.

@RonSpomerOutdoors Hey Ron, Really enjoy your podcasts, always entertaining and excellent content. I've been hunting for around 48 years and shooting rifles and relaoding for better of 35 years and something just made me check the numbers again. And, I have long realized that cartridges have various accepted names that don't exactly match their true dimmensions, but in one area, there seems to be a complete shift from reality...the 6.5mm-7mm class. If you look at conversion tables (Standard to Metric), all the cartridges we have for years called "7mm" or any of them chambered in .284 bullets, are actually 7.2mm. It made me check a few more. Why is it that the 6.8mm's or the .277 caliber bullets in reality the true 7mm bullets, at 7.03mm not 6.8mm? And the rabbit hole has more! The .264 caliber bullets of what we call the 6.5 class of bullets are really 6.7mm, and the .257 caliber bullets are the true 6.5mm's. When you get down to the .243 caliber bullets they are widely accepted as 6mm (6.1mm) and on the other end, the .30 caliber is truly 7.62mm.

Your delusional if you actually think a fence keeps out a poacher, like a lock will deter a thief. As for "keeping game in", well, some of it perhaps, an African antelope can clear a fence just like a whitetail or a pronghorn can. Or an Elk. How high do you make a fence anyway? Game ranches, fences, cameras and a lot of other things represent modern hunting in a big part of the world particularly the affordable parts. How many hunters go to South Africa vs. Tanzania? How much plains game is taken vs. the traditional old time Big 4 (now) safari? And shooting giraffes, well that's an argument for you to have on your next podcast. I can hear the responses to this already, typical anti hunter sentiments etc. Well, they'd be wrong, Alaskan, 50 years, trophy hunting. We are fortunate where i live because for the foreseeable future traditional hunting will last but we have hunter over crowding in many areas now. Trophy hunting needs to be re- thunk everywhere if we expect any semblance of it to last to pass on. Giving the meat to poor Africans is a lame argument too, they were killing game long before rifles and Stewart Granger ever showed up. In the old days, the golden era PHs were a vital part of game management in Africa but that was in colonial times, the countries were not in the economic and political messes they are today. What was one of the first things Kenya did after their independence, duh, kick out the hunters. Do they have a wildlife dilemma today? Duh. How much money has America given them to these past 60 odd years? And how much for protecting wildlife? Trophy elephant weren't followed by armed guards 24/7 in Ruark's day and rhino didn't have their horns lopped off to protect them. I'd like to hear a more down to earth discussion about these things since you've been there enough to offer first hand views. Ask yourself; what would Jack O'Connor and Herb Klein say on your podcast?

The faster a bullet goes, the quicker it slows down. Impact velocity is key. The .460 is just too fast. However you can load heavy for caliber bullets no problem. 550 grain . Even 600. It's just too fast for dangerous game distances.

What gun/round stops a big charging bear at point-blank with one or max 2 rounds? From the story, I understand that 9 mil is absolutely not going to save your life in the above scenario.
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors 11 сағат бұрын
Alex, first we need to define "point-blank range." Is that 12 inches or 12 feet of the distance at which your bullet does not diverge from the vital zone of your target, in which case it could be as far as 400 yards. Let's assume you mean 12 feet. The answer is any bullet hard enough and fast enough and accurate enough to penetrate to the brain or spinal column of the charging bear. Based on what Phil told us, this could be a hard cast from a 9mm. Based on the incident with the Alaska woman in the 1950s that several have mentioned, it could also be the right 22 Long Rifle bullet, but I wouldn't bet my life on that. The challenge is, as Phil aptly outlined, is balancing gun and bullet to one's desire to carry it. It's easy to say 45-70 or 458 Lott. It's not so easy to lug those rifles around every time you're in bear country. Picking berries, flyrodding, cleaning fish, gutting and sectioning a moose or caribou... Are you really going to have an 8-pound rifle over your shoulders?

@@RonSpomerOutdoors The most dangerous situation I imagine is when the bear jumps you from a bush (let's say 5 meters away. I have 2, 3 seconds until bear reaches me) and you don't have time to aim or get your rifle. Is there a gun that can stop with one shot a bear? I am not concerned about bears coming from a distance as the master guide should have a rifle or something. But I as a tourist, with no idea on shot placement, can only shoot once, maybe twice. The q is what do I bring for this scenario?

I bought one of these when they first came out, the 221 Fireball in the Bolt action XP- 100 was chambered in that cartridge round and loved the round. You could buy a brass insert to shoot any 22 rimfire cartridge. I have searched for an insert to shoot the 22 Magnums . Smith and Wesson bought the company and never made the gun.

Such is the steep price one pays for living in a democratic republic of the people, by the people and for the people. The old stuff still works just fine and, actually, better than ever. So choose your favorite and enjoy! And remember, the "new" 6.5 Creedmoor has been around since 2007.

I have a Remington 870 Tactical Pump. I saw a You Tube video by a Cop and he told me something really important. I used to keep the shotgun fully loaded with 6 rounds of #00 Buckshot….not anymore. The compression from that spring will “Deform” your shot shell and it will not load. So, I unloaded my shotgun and damn, it was true, all of those rounds had mushroomed near the opening, not much, but enough to keep the round from being chambered…SO..only keep maybe 2 rounds but keep a side saddle with.6 more at the ready!

Ron, I’ve been watching and reading your work for years. I’m sorry but as responsible hunters we have been proponents of range and power expectations well within the capabilities of the “vintage” (non creed/non prc and not bc biased) cartridges. As always in the hands of competent, practiced and skillful shooters shots out to 400m are well within their capabilities and are acceptable. In my position at the largest otc firearm vendor I am constantly amazed at the lack of skill, interest in improving and pre conceived ideas about the cartridges that keep being flogged upon shooters No new shooter needs to have their first statement at the counter to be “my kid needs a 1000 yd deer rifle, let me see that creedmore I see on KZfaq “ then turn and hand the rifle to the child shorter than the rifle, who is unable to hold it up!! My neighbors, and other acquaintances have stopped allowing hunting for many reasons. It’s too bad that a common lament is over the shot but not recovered game animals that seem to be more common

Alex, many viewers claim those sabot Accelerator bullets are illegal, but I've never seen any laws, regulations, or evidence that they are. I'd call that a rural myth. Most ammunition companies load similar sabots for shooting in shotguns, too.

Well I've already commented on this video but now I'm going to comment about the bird shot. So I have a CZ Sharp tail 20 gauge with 26-in barrels and a traeger selector single trigger so I can switch from right or left which one shoots first. And I have a modified choke in one barrel and a full choke and the other because I mainly hunt rabbits with this gun and same thing with birds. You might have one that jumps up at your feet. I want to jumps up at 5 yd or 10 yd or 30 yd

I do much the same, Les, but I like a 28" barrel for the additional momentum it helps maintain in my swing and follow through. I like an improved cylinder choke plus modified because I get way more bird shooting opportunities at 15 to 35 yards than longer. Enjoy your rabbit hunts!

My Ruger no.1 has a 28 inch barrel in .257 Wby. 4 inches longer of barrel compared to my Weatherby Vanguard should give me a pretty good boost in velocity from a cartridge that already zips and have a Ruger no.1 that is chambered in a somewhat rare to Ruger makes it a desirable rifle for some collectors.
