Season 1 Episode 4: MISTAKEN
After shots ring out at a movie theater, the Chicago Med doctors work to treat the victims while hospital administrator Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) attempts to keep the press at bay. To treat a teenager with an eating disorder, Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) enlists the help of Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt), but his unorthodox methods rub Natalie and the...

"That's not ethical!" Neither is insta-diagnosing someone with an eating disorder just because you once knew someone else who had it, Dr Manning. That mother is a living nightmare though. I'm glad her daughter finally stood up to her in the end.

living nightmare? she said "its your life" the first time and didn't coerce her otherwise... that is not a nightmare, heck, not even bad.

She probably did not insta-diagnosing, as she say: "The indicators are there" 90% percent fo the time if the indicators are there it will be an eating disorder, but one needs to be very careful, even more so with the history of allopathic medicine telling women it's in their minds. She did not move to call child protection and was willing to talk to Dr Charles to confirm before taking radical actions. So I prefer doctors who are alert to abuse but confirm before acting, over doctors who are not aware.

@@lesliesnow3791 it’s the stereotype that some moms are wayyy into diet culture. They say things like „I am so full, I had a handful of almonds 3 hours ago!“, „why are you eating, we just had dinner!“ (meanwhile dinner was some salad with 0 protein and little to no dressing). Like ridiculous „healthy“ behaviors which can install fear of food in their children :/

"That's not ethical!" Girl, I've seen you do more unethical things than give a patient a tic tac. The only thing unethical would be if Dr. Charles charges 5 grand for giving that tic tac.

Actually placebos are unethical as it denies the patient autonomy
@nicolasi1844
@nicolasi1844 4 ай бұрын
@@gamingwhilebroken2355 In that instance the placebo was not used instead of a treatment but to achieve a diagnostic that was beneficial to the patient. Often, ethical decisions are situational (the context is important) and not a manichean choice between absolute good and absolute evil. «Do no harm» is situational. When a doctor or a paramedic makes a tracheotomy on the spot that hurts the patient and is risky, but can save the patient live, that is not unethical.

I’ve had a feeding tube. I was in a coma and on life support for two weeks so they put a tube down my throat to feed me. When I woke up they had to put it in my nose and down my throat. It was awful and painful. I think I’d rather have the surgery.

Its when you give a false medication (sugar pill, for example) to a patient, if the patient gets better, it means that their symptoms might not be physical. It's used to test if a new medication actually works (if more people that took the placebo gets better than the new drugs, it means that the new drugs doesn't work). In real life, it's more complicated, but that's the gist of it.

A fake pill. Used in medical trials. One group gets the real medication, another gets the fake pill. The patients don't know. In many trials those who get the placebo report feeling better, less symptoms and some do show improvement.

You described a blind study where the patients don’t know what they get. A double blind is where the administrators don’t know either so they can’t create a bias unknowingly.
