They make two versions/variations of this lantern. I own the other version and like it MUCH better. It's called the Fire Maple Firefly lantern. The glass globe on the firefly version has defusers in it that make lighting up an area much more efficient and pleasing. The case the firefly version comes in is also superior. It has a foam insert that keeps the globe secure. It also comes with a canvas cover sleeve for the butane bottle.

@Kaufeetimevideo glad I'm not the only one who sees no advantage over a mantle style. As far as dual fuel.. I always considered butane a cook gas, not lighting. When I'm in the truck, weight doesn't matter and if I'm canoeing, I'm taking a flashlight, couple candles and glowsticks, one can of cook gas for a micro stove, not wasting space and weight on a lantern.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Fire Maple lantern! It sounds like the Firefly version has some great features that make it more efficient and pleasing to use. I appreciate the detailed description of the lantern and its case. By the way, have you heard about the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series? It's a versatile powerhouse with massive capacity and fast recharging capabilities. It could be a great addition to your outdoor gear collection.

I had ordered this a few days ago and was surprised you hadn't reviewed it yet, so was pleasantly surprised to see this video pop up. Since you make fair reviews, I'm glad to know I picked it up, since I tend to do winter camping in Quinzhees and was looking for something to light and heat a bit. Keep doing the great work, and Happy New Year!

Propane is at least 3 times the pressure as isobutane at the same temperature. Hence, more gas output when the valve is wide open. Also why propane works better at altitude or in the cold.
@joemikeska2657
@joemikeska2657 6 ай бұрын
It’s under more pressure and works better at cold weather because it’s evaporation point is much colder than butane. Under 20°, butane doesn’t readily vaporize, hence inverted butane adapters for stoves.

I bought one a month ago after watching Luke use it in another video. Used it for the first time last night. Used it along side two Feuerhand oil lanterns. I kept the flame well within the glass globe and it was impressive. 35 degrees and it put out way more light than a UCO candle but less than the oil lanterns. I was very impressed with the performance. Got it for the under $30 dollar price. I have the Fire Maple Saturn stove as well based on watching another of Luke’s videos. Absolutely love it. So far Fire Maple products have been superb.

I purchased the Snow Peak lantern based on your review of that product. I tried it with a propane adapter and it worked great on a 1 lb canister. But I also considered this Firemaple lantern and almost bought it instead. It looks like the Firemaple has some great features and may be cheaper, something to consider. Great review and I'm glad you tested it on both fuel sources.

Really glad you showed it on propane because it's important for people to see how quick is shoots up after lit. I have seen people be negligent and stand over things when lighting them, especially people I've hung out with that are new to using camp stoves. It would be so dangerous if you didn't expect a large flame, and stood over top when lighting it, you'd seriously injure yourself. Great unintended reminder to stand to the side of flame when lighting your stove

I'd say the most common complaint about stoves or certain types of lanterns is easily the ignitors that stop working. Doesn't seem to matter what brand, piezoelectric ignitors have a tendency to fail more than any other part of them. Eliminating an ignitor may be a pain, but it also eliminates what can likely become the most common complaint about a product. As any sensible camper has a (multiple!) way(s) to start fires that don't include a small piezoelectric ignitor, I don't see this as a major issue at all.

I have one of these but under a different name. The brand name is Robens. You do give some good information about the product you have.

I've been here a LONG time and I've never heard "holllllly sh!t!"🤣🤣 Curses are usually muted due to avoiding being throttled....that was hilarious haha. It looks like a cool lantern, I personally love my oil converted UCO 3 candle lantern, with three flames it's actually a heater. Never had any issues with it other than bulkiness, but it's no worse than carrying fuel cannisters.

Hey Luke, great review, thanks. Wow, 16 oz propane tank(1 lb) is 453.59 grams at 1 gram/hour that’s like 453 hours, that’s insane! That’s like almost 19 days if I’m correct and manufacture is right on the consumption. Maybe not a bad idea for a survival situation in a car or tent. Love watching your stuff, excellent, none biased reviews and great, potentially life-saving advice. Only one trivial niggle though. All of your vlogs seem to have a colour balance issue. They seem to lack green tint and, as a result, appear to be primarily blue and orange? I know, I know, that's not really important in the general scheme of things. I was just wondering if you'd noticed as I've not seen anyone else make comment about it. Keep em coming Luke.

This "lantern" is a solution looking for a problem. If you want an open flame light source use a candle. Cheaper, lighter and the glass won't break. If I'm using a gas as a fuel I'll use a mantle lantern. I have one as small as this unit. And I have candles.
@grinninggoat5369
@grinninggoat5369 6 ай бұрын
Exactly and Amen! I would not waste $5 on this "lantern" product, let alone $40 + the price of a gas canister. I would take a more energy dense liquid fuel in a mantle lantern or catalytic heater than the item in the video. It's the 21st century... the problem isn't that it doesn't come with a striker/ignitor... the problem is that the device is called a lantern yet produces so little useable light for the energy spent! I have ethanol alcohol vapor lamps that pressurize themselves, use a mantle and made in the 1920's that are safer, more energy efficient and burn much brighter and as long as that $40 modern fire hazardbeing called a lantern. A glamper camper is the last person who should be using something with an open blowtorch flame shooting out of it while getting close enough to it to roast a marshmallow.

I suspect that a piece of stainless steel screen cut and shaped into an elongated funnel would substitute for a mantle and also radiate heat horizontally. Make it so it wedges itself in the upper half of the globe to keep heat from the base.

It would need a spacer(pot/cup stand) to breathe, otherwise the flame would go out, or exit through the lighting port, melting the plastic globe holder.

I wonder what would happen if you tied a mantle in it? Is there a lip enough to tie it? Worth trying.

It would be nice to get some measured fuel consumption figures at a couple different flame heights. The only one I’ve been able to find said 4gr/hr for a one inch flame. My guess is the higher flame most shown in the video was more. Wouldn’t want people burning up their fuel thinking it was barely using any.

You can cut up the packaging and use it to pad the hard case to stop the rattling.

The actual orange version actually looks more like brass or copper depending the lighting which I don't mind, unless the product photos are not picking up the color as well as it should?
