The city centre of Cork is basically an island. The River Lee splits north and south and the city centre is in the middle of the split. The North Side and South Side are basically suburbs that stretch out north and south of the river. The North Side is basically all hills (Cork was built in a valley), going from Mayfield (where Keane is from) in the North East to Knocknaheeny in the North West, basically looking down over the city. It's where you get a lot of housing estates and traditionally low and middle income families. The North Side is pretty much set in terms of it's geography and ability to expand. The South Side though has some hills by the city centre but then flattens out and it's the South Side where you see the most expansion and various satellite towns have been swallowed up to become part of the expanding city. When the city limits expand, they expand south, not north because there's nowhere on the north side to really expand to (Glanmire is technically on the North Side but nobody counts it lol). The cultural divide, such as it is, is based around the idea that the North Side is largely working class and the further up the hills you go into the North Side, the rougher the area. South Siders will often claim that the North Side is the rough part of the city and full of scum. On the flip side, the South Side is considered to be more middle to upper class, more "posh" and well-to-do. These perceptions have some merit, however, Montenotte, one of the "poshest" areas in Cork, is on the North Side and Mahon, one of the roughest areas in Cork, is on the South Side. The truth is, both sides of the city have significant working class and middle to upper class areas and while generally, the class differences still exist as a whole, it's a lot more even now than it was a few decades ago. One of the issues that remains is that the North Side often feels abandoned by the City Council. A lot of the major works that are done outside the city centre tend to happen on the South Side. This is in part due to geography. There's no room on the North Side to expand, the roads can't be made bigger. There are plans to build a new tram system in Cork that will go out to the South Side and beyond but won't go to the North Side because of the hills and lack of space. That's not to say that the North Side has had no development, it has but it feels limited compared to the South Side, again due to the lack of space but as I mentioned, there's a perception that the powers that be don't really care about the North Side. All of that being said, to answer the most obvious burning question, if the North and South Sides decided to have a full on epic Lord Of The Rings style battle, the North Side would win hands down. 🤣
