Well every once in a while it occurs to me that all these different personality models are humanity's best attempts to understand the patterns and variations that develop among the various individual humans. Any given personality type can only be so accurate at describing a given individual. And especially if the description doesn't fit perfectly, you're always going to wonder if it really describes YOU. Every system we have is constantly getting improved, and eventually you realize you need to tear down the whole system and start from scratch. I'm willing to bet someday we'll find out how obsolete all these current personality models are that we'll need to build something totally new. Every system we've built So far is technically still in progress. Nothing is ever really "set in stone" (as annoying as that thought might be). I wonder if INTPs know this deep down, and if that's why they're never firmly set on what type they are.

You know you are an INTP when you edit a comment immediately after posting it because you “found a better word for it”
@christiancarter255
@christiancarter255 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, I'll do the same, as an ENTJ. I'll look back and edit my comment almost 90% of the time after having had posted it, and almost the same percent goes into editing my comment on the fly (I've went back to edit this now eleven times, adding and rewording stuff). However, I usually want people to respond to me, like 99% of the time I want this (like right now)! Do INTP's, or you, if you're an INTP, usually want everybody to respond to them? Respond!!! 😐
@sherbet3310
@sherbet3310 4 жыл бұрын
Christian Carter I really don’t mind if someone doesn’t respond to my comment, but precise language and worrying about if the wording could be taken a different way than intended can lead to waaaaay too many edits happening. It’s a lot of an anxiety thing for me. It’s interesting that both personalities have somewhat a similar trait, but possibly for different reasons? I also edit my comments when I’m writing them, taking out parts that I don’t like. (Also yes, I’m INTP. Forgot to answer that.)
@christiancarter255
@christiancarter255 4 жыл бұрын
@@sherbet3310 It's interesting that you bring up the precision at which a message should read so as to convey correctly the intended message. When I write out a text message to my INFP sister, I can be very careless about my word usage but still get the message across to her and she understand it, as she is pretty much usually not thinking logically but rather emotionally. Just so long as I give to her a bunch of happy faces and (sometimes overly) possessively-connotated words in the messages I send to her, she seems to understand quickly what my message says. I've failed to logically teach her how to do math. Anyways, I think the biggest reason as to why I want people to respond to me is so that I can validate my logic and, therefore, myself, so to speak, which I usually want A LOT of when logically analyzing things. Is the anxiety thing for you something that has happened all your life or especially when your thinking of precisely what to say, or something else? I've done the same with editing out certain parts of my comments; I actually did that in this one where I talked about how I usually dislike reasoning with my INFP sister, who almost always reasons with emotion. By the way, those percentages I gave in my first reply were arbitrarily used. I actually don't go far as to measure out how many times I edit stuff. Respond! (I'm trying to not get too used to using imperative verbs, but maybe doing so be help me in the long run.)
@sherbet3310
@sherbet3310 4 жыл бұрын
Christian Carter As far as I know, I’ve been pretty cautious about things my whole life, so I think the worry about conveying my meaning properly is just a side effect of that. I don’t particularly like to use emojis or emoticons, so I worry sometimes that people will take the message in the wrong way (even if there wasn’t anything that might offend someone), so I typically just change phrases like “for example” to “such as” because I fear it could make someone perceive my meaning differently. I pride myself on my vocabulary, but the downside of that is that I’m always wondering if certain ways to say things could be interpreted badly. I don’t really have a drive for a response, particularly because I’m worrying too much about how the person could be confused and think I’m trying to offend them, so since that’s on the front of my mind, I imagine if they don’t respond, it’s better. I’m sure if I just kept half of the stuff I write the same, the message could be taken the same way and nothing else would be said, but I tend to get overly cautious, which can lead to me correcting thing as small as punctuation or grammar. That’s also why I don’t really like commenting typically.
@christiancarter255

@@sherbet3310 I'm fascinated by your input, and I was mentally engaged as I read through your comment. I relate to what you said in a lot of ways, for sure. It's really interesting to me how some people read things much differently than others. It's frustrating, however, to know that our input is (supposedly) never perfect for everybody. That would be wishful thinking if we tried reaching the gold bar of perfection all the time. Yet, there is always the possibility that others will understand and connect better with our messages than we intended. At the same time, people can misread us. This happens to me all the time, as I typically talk a relatively very large amount while I try to properly assess and, thereby, communicate with people more efficiently, which can all be quite cumbersome. So many times while I was growing up wanted others to understand me, and I thought they functioned like I did, and so I'd inform them the same way that I'd want them to inform me. This didn't always work. Actually, my approach in appealing to others in the manner of which I was was usually too forceful. Being an E-type, I talked a lot, but I seemingly mostly didn't get anywhere. I don't like when I'm interpreted incorrectly, but -- and this might be a terrible idea -- I enjoy being witty and charismatic and feeding people a lot of bullshit (of over-the-top emotional responses among other things), especially if I'm in a good mood and I believe that that person won't "get" me if I simply used my extroverted thinking. This is fine by me, usually, because the people who I feed BS will usually laugh, and humor interestingly connects people, kind of, I guess, at least. It took me quite some time to develop my charismatic side in that I'd be comfortable with BS'ing with others. Anyways, not only have I thought about the effectiveness of my punctuation and grammar when I write people, I've also went so far as to think a lot about my contractions, voice, scope, sentence order, paragraph order, and other things. I'm sure you can relate. I get why you wouldn't want either of us to comment back to each other; however, comment me back.

Yep. I have worked in both commissioned sales and joined the military and was between decent and outstanding at both. I'd hate to do either ever again. I think it's because if we _have_ _to,_ we have within us the capability to make ourselves socialize, or organize, or emulate "feely" responses (is it cliche and void of substance but sounds nice?). None of these functions are beyond our comprehension, they're just chores that annoy us. Inversely, I don't think it works the other way around as easy. S's probably not going to be able to pick up N's thinking when it suits him or he'd be an N to begin with... Likewise expecting the rigid to be flexible, or the extrovert to go back in his head... Maybe some could... but I would be surprised if it was as easy or easier for them.

I got lucky with that, my mother was fine with my constant questioning. She did have one rule, though - if there was something that needed to be done right away, like an urgent or emergency situation, we were to do as she said, and she'd explain later. Which she always did. My father isn't so big on the questions, but only when he feels they were challenging him. Otherwise, he's all about it. The rest of the world, on the other hand...

My little two cents about INTP and emotional intelligence: I think most INTPs are prone to having a very select few "valuable" people for whom we are willing to go above and beyond in terms of understanding and working with their emotions. We study them and learn what makes them tick as we do with everything else, and *because* they are important to us even if we don't agree with or inherently sympathize with their feelings we also understand why they are there, in context, and are driven to help bring them the kind of peace our own approach gives us. In that sense, we CAN be highly emotionally intelligent, it's just that for most people we don't care. Our triggers that turn off our care switches are many, our standards are high, so when those few people pass they can reap the benefits of being so intimate with someone that cares so intensely about... basically everything. It's such a hot-cold thing, either we care and feel deeply even if we aren't good at showing it, or we care not at all.

We have perfect schedules, they are as follows: -Procrastinate on task, -Watch video on why procrastination is bad as an excuse to procrastinate -realise it's one AM and that it's time to do four times as much work as we needed to -finish daily session of overachieving by falling asleep to the sound of our morning alarm clocks. -repeat

@Cleanish Slatethis is going to sound pretentious so just bare with me here! I'm going to say that the truth is function in its most basic form. I think our perception of what the truth is is too localized to human perspective. Ultimate truth is far greater than anything that we may understand, meaning that it's therefore useless to us in the same way an aeroplane is useless to an ant. Therefore we often create a version of 'truth' based on how useful we find it and how effectively it serves us. We then clamour to prove our perspectives through whatever the agreed paradigm is at the time. As long as it functions for the duration of the person, it serves as all the truth they need. The ultimate truth is just far too big and far too unwieldy to be considered needed. To stare at the sun is too great. The only way we can catch a glimpse of the sky is with sunglasses on, or at the expense of your eyes. You would need to sacrifice one perspective and lose the other. Science tries to stand on both sides of that coin!

I guess the greatest difference to entp is that i don't like the idea to chase for glory especially for impressing the others. I hate being in the spotlight and have tendencies to keep my thought in my head as long as possible to explore it in great detail and from all angles. Here and there when topics started to get interdisciplinary it's just an unavoidable thing to happen, when i talk about my thoughts people can't keep up the vastness of the idea. Lastly I don't start a conversation until I met someone who seem to have the same interests as me. The person get plus points if he or she shares insights I don't know about that make me curious. Both are highly opinionated , logical and introverted, but one is more likely to make sure people know what they think! I have been married to both types. Dont trust the descriptions. Ti is a cold and analytical function that is balanced by Fe, a warm function that cares about others. Te is a cold function balanced by an almost equally cold function, Fi. They din't take into account how others feel but instead on how *they* feel about what they see.

@@downsjmmyjones101 Fi is not at all cold; in fact, it's passionate. It just isn't as easy to explain to others. Calling Fi cold if you have Fe is analogous to Te users calling Ti users illogical because the logic doesn't present in an quickly decipherable form. I've seen that happen, where people assume that the Ti user is trying to be contrary or just takes pride in wasting everybody's time, but saying that they prioritize themselves over others wouldn't really be accurate or fair. What they prioritize is the complexity and nuance of truth, which is also what Fi prioritizes, just from a standpoint of what is helpful/harmful rather than precise/imprecise. Fi constantly considers others' needs and perspectives just like Ti does. But neither process is easily unraveled from the outside looking in, whereas the extroverted judging functions automatically communicate in ways that are easier for people to understand, which makes them seem less "selfish" at first glance.

I don't know how interested you are in certain subjects, but I was able to overcome this hurdle by being able to differentiate my interests. Ever since I was a child, I have been obsessed with animals (specifically reptiles) so I chose to major in Organismal Biology. My other interests (crochet, martial arts, flute, world history, etc.) are more of my hobbies. I enjoy learning about the mysterious Land of Punt, making presents for my friends and family, and learning to play the theme songs of my favorite shows, but I know that I'd get tired of all of these things if I decided to make one of them my career. To make sure I won't get bored studying STEM at college, I applied to mostly liberal arts colleges with a more interdisciplinary learning environment. I don't know how helpful this is for you, seeing as you are already in college, but I think you should test out all of your interests as hobbies and play around with which one you think you'd want to have as a career. Also, I hope you understand that you can always change your major or switch professions if you do not like it. It's probably a lot harder than just sticking to one thing for the rest of your life even if you hate it, but what's the point of doing something you don't like?

I'm more concerned with logical consistency than "truth," because the absolute facts are usually impossible to discern without sufficient evidence. Also, anybody with kids or a job has to develop a schedule. In my case there's a sort of frantic clinging to the schedule with constant failures caused by forgetting, misplacing, oversleeping or zoning out. What seems like normal attentiveness for others seems very difficult for me. As a defense mechanism, I always put things in a specific place and leave reminders to myself everywhere.

You know the hardest thing for me ever is trying to do something I’m not familiar with. Because my brain will tell me I won’t be able to understand every little detail of it and it discourages me. For example, cooking. I’m not a cooker... but my mother is a bit more traditional and would like a daughter who knows how to cook. So I have days where I cook for the family and every single time it’s my turn it’s agonizing. I want to make X but I realize that I will never make the perfect X because of all these “rules” of cooking I don’t understand, of every combination of ingredients I don’t know of that would make the perfect taste. It discourages me so much and it’s daunting that all I do is make the same types of food over and over again. Some people will think of it as lazy (it is lol) but at the same time not! I HATE cooking because of this and I find myself thinking about this with other things I don’t know everything of which of course I don’t know everything about anything! So I feel so powerless sometimes and so limited. Yes, if I had all the time in world, I’d try to perfect this and that and learn all I can but I don’t. Just wondering if anyone else struggles with this also.

Not in the context of cooking, but I completely relate to the paradox of wanting to learn everything, but also be GOOD at everything, and some things you can only learn by doing, which implies you'll be crap at it when you first start, which I can't stand so I either give up early or don't start at all :/ I suppose that could be considered laziness, but I think that with INTPs it goes deeper than that; it's more like you feel really overwhelmed by the years of effort you would have to put in to truly master something so you try to avoid doing the thing at all, as opposed to being too lazy to do a simple a task.

I am truly grateful for Nathan's understanding and capacity for sharing. It's nice (nay, a relief) to understand and to be understood. I recognized these traits in myself at around the age of eleven (female INTP). If I had had this information and analysis early on, I wouldn't have been so hard on myself and had such self doubt. For example, I always thought that there was a problem with me for being a 'chameleon' in social situations, for my not liking emotion yet being highly empathic and wanting others to have a good experience. I often tried different experiences just to add to my store of knowledge so that I could create those systems I use to parse and understand the world. Fortunately I survived all...lol.

as an INTP I actually agree with the "My Truths" thing on the basis that it's literally impossible to prove anything to be real as it all exists in subjective reality. SO really everything is a subjective truth. The only thing that you can do is find contradictions in logic which debunks "personal truths" if the other person can't defend it. The thing that's annoying about the sentiment "My Truth" is when the person chooses to ignore all other possibilities. Then I want to punch hole in something.

Lost Scream Fi is your ability to value things by how much they mean to you and/or others. Fi is not a measure of how sensitive you are (although that can come as a byproduct.) There are two parts to your personality: -Your nature (Your cognitive functionality) This does not change your function order is set for life. -Your nurture (How you utilise your cognitive functions) This can and does change all the time. If you are an ISFP you will always be an ISFP, your cognitive stack does not change unless you get a serious brain injury. However, you can change your nurture. If you were to magically go from being an ISFP to an INTP, you would suddenly find it incredibly hard to value how much something means to you.

I mean- with the ‘providing a shoulder to cry on’, I try and help those who are hurting emotionally, but frankly I don’t usually do it in the way most people do. Lots of people open up to me, because I find it hard to turn people down, and when I hear what the issue is, instead of putting the “aw no that’s horrible, i’m really sorry that happened’, I analyse what the real source of the issue is, think about the person and how they might be able to solve, or would want to solve the issue, and give them advice to the best of my ability. Anyone else?

Speaking for myself as an INTP, I only "people-please" to keep harmony so as not to cause conflict. It's a selfish move. If everyone around me is calm an happy, then I don't have to deal with the negative emotions of others or people having a negative view of me. It's simply conflict-avoidance.

Not strictly an INTP thing also happens with a few other types but hearing: "That's just the way things are" or something along those lines. When people act as if rules can't be bypassed or changed in any way and no i matter how stupid they are they need to be followed. I fucking hate school, literally why can't I wear my hat inside? It's dumb

Wow. I went into this video thinking I was finally going to be disabused of the notion that I'm an INTP and instead I felt completely read. You described me to a tee. I kept going back to make sure I wasn't letting my imagination get the best of me but, in every case, I could think of countless examples from my everyday life that fit these descriptions. Glad I watched! Thanks!

You know you're an INTP when you suddenly spit a random word out of nowhere. It's when INTPs' auto pilot for a second forgets to keep the train of thought internal. *thinking silently for 10 minutes* Pancakes *continue thinking* Im an INTJ but i know INTPs by heart

You know you're not an INTP when you actually buy calendars to plan out a schedule and jot down important dates in the coming year, instead of just hanging them up to stare at them for their nice pictures, even though you often get too lazy to switch to the next one once the month is over.

@@lovewho It's a sad truth. You don't even know how many calendars people have gotten me where I only see about four to six months worth of the pictures because I'll randomly look at my wall and see it's stuck on July when it's the middle of September. And even though it would only take two seconds to move to the right page, I often don't bother.

I've been living with an ESTP and an ISTJ for so long and wondering why I'm so stressed out. This channel popped up in my feed this morning and had reminded me, I am but a computer. And that as an essential worker I've spent all pandemic jealous of anyone who could work from home. It reminds me also why I can never seem to measure up at work, and how many people seem to just sale through management....I am a terrible manager because the goals are unattainabe and meaningless. The only reason to continue up is to make my boss happy. I have no other introverts in my day to day, which is painful for someone who grew up with an INTJ brother. No one is impressed by my analytics. I get frustrated because they find it distressing and I find it de-stressing.

You’d benefit from a different job. Or, if it’s the S people are out of place (because they only see trees and not the forest of interrelated variables), then ignore them. Or give them direction and reason for the direction (spend time on the presentation and talk about impact because they care about whys). , Then let them carry out the tedious task of execution. That’s the boring part anyway.

@@Jessica-kk1cz I appreciate your thoughtful reply! You are 100% correct. Since I posted this comment, I have indeed moved onto another job, and am now working my way into a more introvert friendly career. I really like how. You describe ‘s’ personalities though, it really makes me understand them a bit better.
