As an intermediate pianist, I thought this exercise would be so easy! But, wow, not at all. Transposing the exercise into different keys, figuring out the level 3&4 chords for that scale, coordinating the fingering in both hands (scales and arpeggios) is a challenging brain exercise for me. I am going to use this as my daily warm-up, focusing on a different key each day. I will play the scale my usual way, and then follow up with your "fun" way. While I was practicing this today, my husband walked in and said, "That's a beautiful piece." LOL

Agreed! I’ve been playing guitar for years, but recently broke my foot and it of work so I thought this would be the perfect two months to really start grinding away at the piano. The arpeggio with the left hand even at 60bpm and right hand in double was way over my skill level. This is going to be “fun”!

learning skills at the cost of enjoyment, only gets you as far as need be for skills. Learning by enjoying at the cost of skill, only gets you as far as you can enjoy. Learning both in balance lets you progress, and enjoy the progression. One of the smartest things I saw from family guy is when Peter 'mastered' violin with a Fletcher like teacher, for a specific purpose, then snapped it right after.

After watching this video several times, I tried it, and it caused a breakthrough in my understanding of chords. I had decided to learn scales and become familiar with playing in the keys of C, G, F, and D. So I played the pretty C scale, and then I thought, let me try G. But the chords did not fit, and the thought came, what is the chord that corresponds to A minor in the key of G? Lightening Flash!!! It's the same relationship to the tone tone semitone positions as in C. Ohhhhh that's why they have names for all the intervals. So to prove it to myself, I looked up what the names of the chords were (in my Alfred's) for what you played, A minor-F-C, and found they were vi, IV, and 1. Major breakthrough! no pun intended. I'm going to be 79 on my next birthday, and although I came from a very musical family, and played a little guitar in college, I became a doctor and just started getting serious about learning piano recently in my retirement. I don't know how long I have to live, but I don't want to get to 95 and wish I had studied and practiced more. You are a wonderful teacher! Thank you for your lessons!!

Just discovered your channel and wanted to thank you. This is a GREAT approach to practicing scales. Started out following your guidelines, but it is SO easy to improvise on this, and it actually spurs you to be creative. Example: started with your chord progression and then varied it slightly to C-G-Am-Fm which inevitably led to playing Pachelbel's Canon (ending with Em). And also continuously varying up the patterns, even trying broken chords/arpeggios in the right hand while playing scales in left (found that to be harder). All in all a wonderful exercise. Thanks so much, and you've got a new subscriber!

Wow. Surreal. Yesterday was my Day 3, of teaching myself! I learned the video where he teaches “All of Me” by John Legend. I think it must be a stripped back version but I learned it and now can play with my eyes closed in just one night! I am ecstatic! 😅 Tonight, I picked this one as I really want to understand what I’m doing, not just copy learning songs, if that makes sense! I’m finding it hard to do the little skip up the keys! Can’t figure out if he uses his thumb to skip to the E or his middle. Thumb makes sense to me but I want to get it right soooo badly! 😂 I hope you’re still playing 😊

Thank you Jazer! I've been self-taught for quite a few years and my greatest problem is sight reading. It's fine on cello, sax and flute (one note at a time), but piano is my first love, and I've always had to memorise the music before I can play confidently. I'm now hoping this exercise will get me out of my comfort zone a bit (I only need to memorise 3 chords) and it sounds lovely too.
