In the video you asked us to go to the fourth note of the scale to play in the next key to the left in the circle of fifths then play TTLStar in that key. I did it all the way around back to the C then I wondered how to go the other way and found to go clockwise around the circle of fifths, just go to the fifth note and “REVELATION” -> That’s why it’s called the circle of fifths! I’m sure millions of people know this but it sure would be helpful if people told you this when you’re first learning about the C of Fs. Anyway, thanks I learned something today.

You are a really good teacher. Of all the hundreds of piano learning videos on youtube, I think by far I get the most out of yours. I'm teaching myself how to play, from apps and books and videos, which I know will probably cause me to pick up loads of bad habits, but I feel your videos really help. For example, I'm comfortable with playing most intermediate level pop music in C major, but I really struggle with any other key, and I find playing scales a bit boring. But now you've just shown me in this video a much more fun way to learn how to play new keys using simple melody nursery rhymes that everyone knows... its genius and I can't wait to give this a go next time I get some piano time. Thanks!

Great lesson, I really like the understanding and importance of improv approach you take over learning how to read music. Would you recommend starting with the pentatonic major and perhaps the blues style first before going to the full major? At least on guitar playing roots it makes sense to learn that simpler scale first and then expand it to major or mixolydian? Could you also speak to modes practically? the more common aeolian and mixolydian or please give your perspective for the piano.

Do you rate Hanon exercises. I’ve been at the keyboard since 2005. But I was in my 40s by then . So stiff fingers (play sax before that, no real crossover skills where fingering is concerned. I’m also left-handed: chord strong, melody weak. Just wondering if you had ideas on that. Thanks. I play jazz

In my opinion, things like Hanon are mostly important if you're working towards virtuosity (ie intermediate / advanced classical music.) If you play jazz, I'd suggest focusing on playing melodies to standards and transcribing solos as a way to develop your right hand technique. It's more common that students come to me with injuries from diving into Hanon too early than students come to me having benefitted from doing those kind of drills.

Regarding the "why?"-It's easier to break the rules too!😋 Plus, it makes music appreciation deeper IMO Edit: you seem to have great posture and ergonomics of playing. Could you maybe explain that one day as a simple video idea? I have never been able to be playing relaxed or comfortable✌️

Just saw your comment. I’m not Ted. But I will say that most chord movements in music are in 4ths not 5ths. That’s why I prefer practicing scales, chords like that.

@@RafLovesMary When you move from the top of the cycle counterclockwise from C to F, that’s movement of a 4th and thinking dominate to tonic ( tension to resolution) is what’s happening all the time in music. Make them all 7th chords and that’s how they want to move. I think of the whole circle as just a way mostly to show flat keys to the left and Sharp keys to the right. Theory stuff. Actually playing & hearing chord progressions, you’re always in tension and release modes 2-5-1. 6-2-5-1 3-6-2-5-1. 4-7-3-6-2-5-1, or most of the time. There are other movements obviously to delay resolution and keep tension longer. There’s more you can draw from the circle of 4ths or 5ths in your musical journey.

I do see how you observe how you see to C to F as a 5th. On a piano moving up is a 4th moving down is a 5th

That’s right - it’s more common for harmony to move counterclockwise around the circle, so it’s nice to practice with the circle in that direction. Especially in the Great American Songbook - the root movement in a lot of jazz standards basically just walks repeatedly around a part of the circle counterclockwise.

Kia ora, Ted. Very interesting. Um ... silly question. Why are you calling it fifths when by the eear it's actually fourths? Sure, when you invert the fourth it's a fifth (in theory) but you're actually travelling in fourths when you're walking the flat path and fifths when you're walking the sharp one (at least that's what my Royal School of Music theory tells me): c, f, b-flat etc. Isn't that going to confuse people?

BEAD GCF = order of flats. Dflat major has 5 flats , so all the black keys. FCGDAEB = order of sharps. G major has one sharp, D has two, and so on...

@@smkh2890no joke! Piano was the only instrument I played through my teens. Fast forward 45 years and I got the bright idea to buy an acoustic guitar and try to learn how to play it. That lasted about two weeks and then I went and got a piano, which I could play once I could feel my fingertips again.

@@5JRTs In all fairness, the guitar is strung in fourths, which once clearly visualised, makes chords appear. Also there are some chord shapes that recur up the fretboard. However, just try to work out a sus chord, which is simple on the keyboard!
